Parallels Desktop repeatedly pops up advertisements when they want you to upgrade to the newest version. Software that pops up advertisements is called adware. I don't expect software that I pay for to show me advertisements. I have complained to Parallels about this over several versions of the software, and they continue this customer unfriendly practice. They will claim it is to inform the user "in case you decide to upgrade Windows to a certain version" or "in case you decide to upgrade OS X to a certain version", but other companies manage to inform users of these things in a non-intrusive and non-marketing way such as emailing the user or displaying a warning of incompatibility when you actually try to upgrade Windows or Mac. For this reason, I will be moving to VMware Fusion or Oracle VirtualBox and suggest either of these as an alternative to Parallels, which seems intent on extracting as much money as possible from their paying customers.

Hello,
We use in-product notifications to share several types of information with our customers.
First, and most importantly, we share information about product updates which are generally related to compatibility with OS X, new features and product enhancements.
Second, we occasionally share special offers from Parallels or other third party companies who provide special deals for our customers. Many of our customers rely on the information about product updates and appreciate the special deals for products that are of interest to them.
Individual notifications can be turned off by clicking the "don't show this again" button. However, because customers need to receive important product information, there is not a mechanism for customers to completely disable notifications.

Thanks,
Parallels Team

This product isn't what it seems. In effect, if you buy this item, you are buying a subscription to use this product until approximately October, 2016. At that time, Apple will update its operating system and Parallels 10 will stop working. You will either need to buy Parallels 12 or you won't be able to run Windows at all. Parallels Software has a purposeful limitation which kills the operability after no more than 24 months.

At the very least, PARALLELS SHOULD HONESTLY AND CLEARLY ADVERTISE THIS PRODUCT AS A SUBSCRIPTION, BUT THEY DON'T.

They will argue that they are a small development team, and need to focus on new innovation. But, that is just a convenient excuse to require that all of their users to buy their product every couple of years. I can't believe that almost all Mac developers are able to figure out how to keep their legacy software operable, except for Parallels. When was the last time you bought a program that just stopped working when OSX is updated? It's rare for me, but, for Parallels, it's their business.

There are plenty of alternatives to Parallels you should consider if you don't want to pay to upgrade all the time.

UPDATE: I just got the below note from Parallels as I am running Parallels 9. As you can see, even though I bought this software less than 2 years ago, they've made it so that I can't upgrade my Mac to El Capitan without buying a new version of Parallels.

If you are planning on installing OS X El Capitan (10.11) public beta please note that Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac does NOT support OS X El Capitan. Before you install OS X El Capitan public beta, be sure to upgrade to Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac. It is our latest version that addresses known El Capitan compatibility issues. BONUS: When you upgrade to Parallels Desktop 10 you automatically qualify to get our next version of Parallels Desktop at no additional cost to you.

I have been using Parallels since January 2010 when I first installed Parallels 5. There was a period a few years there when virtual machine software was improving so fast that each Parallels version was worth the upgrade, but I echo other complaints now that these "upgrades" are no longer optional. Parallels has purposefully coded their software to stop working if you install a new version of OS X. It's great that OS X upgrades are now free...oh, wait, they aren't if you are running Parallels, they are $50.

They could easily code around this, but know that we are all hooked on their product. Just beware that you will be required to upgrade every year if you upgrade your OS X.

Additionally, Parallels 10 has it's own issues that is really frustrating. It used to be that you could open Parallels, have it automatically launch your Virtual Machine in whatever visual mode you prefer with one click and when it was time to Shutdown, you could just Quit Parallels with one click and it would automatically suspend the virtual machine. Now, Parallels wants to put more of their product on your dock and so there is now the Parallels icon and the Virtual Machine icon. This means one more window to close, one more window to Command-tab through, and inevitably, one more application that prevents you from shutting down quickly.

They also get really excited about their Coherence mode, wherein your Windows apps are in individual windows on the Mac and "appear" just like native Mac apps...and they do. The problem is that your performance will suffer inordinately! The only way I have ever found the speed to be acceptable is when I am operating in Full Screen mode.

Hello Robert,
Parallels invests and focuses our finite resources on creating superior software to support Windows, Mac, Google, Linux and other communities -- software with the best compatibility and deepest integration with the latest and greatest from those hardware and OS providers. This development and innovation comes with costs, and it's not feasible to offer free upgrades from older versions of Parallels Desktop software.

As for the Coherence view mode, Parallels Support team will be happy to check all the settings for your install and make sure it works great. Support is available 24x7 by phone, chat and email at http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/support/

Thanks,
Parallels Team

Hello,

I want to start out saying that my experience with Parallels has always been Fantastic. Customer service has always been accommodating and technical support has always been quick and accurate. I've had Parallels since my first year in college (2012), and it's been essential to my success. I excelled at my computer programing classes with the use of parallels, and passed my business classes with flying colors using my macbook pros image editing skills. Parallels has built the bridge between Mac's OSX & Windows OS, and in this day and age the use of both operating system is essential for the working world.

Having said this, I'm completely disappointed in the lack of help customer service has been with support for older software. I started out with Parallels desktop 7, then was told I had to purchase Parallels desktop 8 which i did. I skipped desktop 9 because desktop 8 worked perfectly fine for what I needed. now desktop 10 is out. I'm a college students, and all my money is funneled into tuition, housing, books, and food. I can't afford upgrading to every parallels upgrade (which seems like every year).

I called Parallels support number and explained my situation. All the support guy said to me was "You have to upgrade to benefit from the future updates, we will no longer support parallels desktop 8 for OS X updates." They also suggested that I DOWNGRADE my software, and just live with never being able to update my MacBooks operating system. This is ridiculous. The lack of help and abandonment of customers with older software is unheard of. If you were to look at any other company, they support multiple generations of older devices. Why is parallels abandoning a software that is barely 2 years old.
