I've owned Pioneer and Emotiva AVR's in the past and although they are both high quality sounding systems, in my opinion this Denon 4100w is the best sounding system I have heard to date. I'm sure part of the reason is due to the fact that Denon uses Audyssey's room calibration. I've read a lot of good reviews on Audyssey and now that I've experienced it I'm a believer. After running Audyssey the only thing I had to manually change was the front speakers from large to small and the crossover setting. The mix is rich, the subwoofers are perfectly blended and the surround sound has much more detail and dimension. No matter what your circumstances or tastes may be, there are plenty of audio options to satisfy and they all do an excellent job.

Another one of the reasons I purchased this unit was due to its available speaker configurations in Dolby Atmos mode. It can be set up as 5.1.2 (2 ceiling speakers) out of the box, and by adding a 2 channel external amp it can be expanded to 7.1.2 or 5.1.4. I decided to configure a 5.1.4 setup and this AVR was the best bang for the buck in that department. True, it kind of sucks to have to buy another amp, but I can pick up an AudioSource 100 for $125, and that still leaves this unit the best price at this time.

Due to the fact that there is no available media yet, I haven`t had a chance to check out Dolby Atmos. As soon as a movie is available on blu-ray with Atmos I will update. But I expect it will sound pretty dam sweet!

Update: My wife won't speak to me now, and I don't blame her. I ended up returning the 4100, spend another $600 and bought the 5200. My bad! I'm sorry Hun! I know I should have talked this over with you first, but you would have said no, and I REALLY, REALLY wanted this. Have no fear, folks.

Edit - 4/19/2015:
I received it back from the repair shop about a week ago. It took about 2½ weeks to get it back. The fellow doing the repair tested the unit extensively, and said that he was not having any issues using multiple zones. I don't know what got jiggled loose, but he decided to replace the HDMI board in the unit despite not finding any problems. One way or another, this repair has fixed 90% of the grievances I had with this receiver. I can now play different video sources with the respective audio in zone 1 and 2 simultaneously or individually. Zone 3 still requires a toslink optical or analog source, but this occasional reconfiguration is much less of a frustration since I'm not spending 20 minutes each day troubleshooting zone 1 and 2 issues. I have upped my rating from 2 to 3 stars. I would give it 4 stars just based on its features, but can only give 3 because it took 6 months of phone calls to Denon support to get a representative who recognized that the unit was not working correctly. By that time, I had lost half of my hair. I should bill them for Rogaine.

Edit - 2/15/2015:
It turns out my receiver has been malfunctioning all along, but the Denon tech support reps I spoke with didn't understand its features well enough to recognize that. Every time I called, they would tell me that it was working as designed no matter how incredulous I was. If I weren't also discussing the receiver on avsforum I may never have found out. After 5 months of calling them about it on a regular basis, I finally got escalated to a tier 2 support rep who apparently thinks that it should handle different sources to zone 1 and 2 without conflicts. With that information in hand, I am supposed to contact a local Denon authorized repair facility to get it fixed.

I’ve only had my X4100W for a few weeks so this review may change but so far it’s been mixed. I bought the X4100W because I was running out of HDMI ports on my Denon 3808CI and decided to future proof to HDMI 2.0 and 4K video. I was completely satisfied with my 3808CI as it still works absolutely flawlessly and sounds fantastic.

The first thing I noticed about the X4100W is that the surround sound sounds very aggressive. I’m not sure if it’s because my 3808CI Audyssey and custom equalizer settings were very different but my rear speakers are much louder than before. This isn’t a complaint. It’s more of an observation (listening?).

The huge negative I’ve experienced is the random muting of sound when watching TV (FIOS). For some reason, about 6 times an hour on average and usually after commercials, my sound mutes to an extremely low level but not completely off. The sound doesn’t return until you change the volume then the sound returns to the previous level. The volume indicator doesn’t show mute or a change in the volume setting. I emailed Denon about it and they told me to set surround to multi-channel stereo to fix the problem. I told them that that was a total cop out response as I didn’t purchase a $1,400 AVR to use it only in stereo mode but never got a response back. I got feedback on other websites that it is likely an HDMI issue and to switch sound to optical from my set top box but my problem still persists. I never had this problem with the 3808CI and I think this issue is different from the HDMI handshake issue that others seem to have with their Denons. My receiver doesn’t lose the audio signal. The audio just gets muted but you can still hear it. I’ll wait for another response from Denon but so far my experience with this X4100W has been less than perfect.
