Product Description
The new EVGA GeForce GTX 970 is powered by the next-generation NVIDIA Maxwell architecture, giving you incredible performance, unmatched power efficiency, and cutting-edge features. Maxwell is the most advanced GPU architecture ever made, designed to be the engine of next-generation gaming. Inspired by light, it was designed to solve some of the most complex lighting and graphics challenges in visual computing. For the first time, gaming GPUs can dynamically render indirect light using the new VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination technology. Scenes are significantly more lifelike as light interacts more realistically in the game environment. Incredible Speed and Power Efficiency The GTX 970 offers the most advanced performance in its class and delivers 2x the performance of previous generation cards, bringing new gaming experiences to virtual reality, HD, and ultra-resolution 4K displays. Dynamic Super Resolution Technology Enable the detail of 4K monitors, on a 1080P display. DSR produces smoother images by rendering a game at a high resolution, then downscaling it to the native resolution of the display using advanced filtering. Super-Smooth and Stutter-Free GeForce GTX 970 cards support tear-free, super-fast NVIDIA G-Sync monitor display technology, including 4K. Together, these technologies provide the most immersive and competitive gaming experiences possible.

Many reviews said the retail version of this card would come with a back plate or that EVGA would offer a program in which they mail one to the purchaser upon registration. My card did not come with a back plate installed and when I registered the product there was no indication of a back plate program. Hopefully EVGA announces this program soon as it was one of the reasons I purchased this particular card.
As reported by Techpowerup, EVGA chose not to use the Nvidia recommended voltage regulator and instead they placed a cheaper module on this card. This could possibly effect overclocking, but user that will only be running stock shouldn't care.
As for performance and noise, its a great card. I came from a GTX 780 and my Firestrike score increased roughly 16% stock for stock. At $329.99, this card is an incredible value. It not only runs cooler than the 780, but its nearly $100 cheaper than the cheapest GTX 780 on the market right now. The low energy consumption also makes this a great card for SLI without having to purchase a huge PSU.
This card does support 4k and 60hz through HDMI or Display port.
Overall, the GTX 970 is an incredible value, but the EVGA ACX card doesn't seem to be the best one to get. If I had to do over I would have gone with the Gigabyte, MSI, or ASUS card. Hope that helps.
UPDATE: I ended up returning the card. It had coil whine and I was not pleased with how EVGA handled the backplate offer. Even though all the review sites said the same thing, that early customers will be receiving the backplates, EVGA backed out on the claim and said they are not responsible for third party miscommunication. I feel that an EVGA rep relayed the wrong information to the review sites, who then passed along that information to customers. Instead of making it right for those that purchased this card in part because of the backplate offer, they stonewalled. I decided to spend my money elsewhere. Worse temps, worse noise, and a cheaper PCB compared to the competition only made that decision easier. For this reason, I am lowering my initial score to three stars. The card may still be fine for some users and works adequately, but it is not the best option.
The performance of the cards has been incredible... the ease of setup, the simplicity of activating SLI, the rate at which the cards turn out frames is phenomenal. I played Crysis 3 on ultra and in 3D at 1080 and was averaging 96 FPS... incredible performance, with no glitches or stuttering!
But, like the title says... they are LOUD! Even a single card has a distinct high-pitched hum to it. I have tried MSI Aferburner and EVGA Precision to try to turn the fans down, but even at their lowest settings, the cards really do have an annoying buzz/hum to them. As much as I love the performance of the cards, I can take the sound of the cards at idle for short spans before getting a headache.
I am returning the cards because of this (after a week of use it's now unbearable), and will look into perhaps ASUS. I just hope I can find silent 970s... the performance of two of these cards is definitely worth having the dual setup.
Anyway I received this GTX 970 SC earlier this week and am very pleased with it. I am currently playing Elite Dangerous and War Thunder and both run at over 60fps at 1080p with all graphics settings maxed out.
In Elite Dangerous while sitting in the hangar the GTX 650 was getting 22 – 25FPS. Maxed graphics but no AA. The same location in the game only with the EVGA 970 SC produced 90 – 95FPS with Maxed graphics and any of the four types of AA available in the game. That’s roughly 400% improvement over my old card.
It uses 100 watts less power than the previous 7x series cards and until the prices of those older cards are cut, this card is very competitively priced and beats them fairly easily. In fact it is only 8% - 10% slower than the top of the range new 980, but $200 cheaper.
The biggest concern with this card after reading some reviews is that the build quality results in noisy cooling. The card is big and probably should be handled with some care, especially when pressing into the PCIe slot, press on the board not the case. Since I have done that, I have heard no ticking or friction noise like someone else mentioned.
The card currently runs fans at a minimum speed of 1400rpm no matter what settings you apply. But it is to all intents and purposes silent. I cannot hear the video card over a couple of other case fans. When I am doing general computer tasks, the GPU stays around 43c so it could probably be passively cooled for things like web browsing etc. There has been talk of a firmware update to allow the fans to run at lower RPM. I’ve only seen it for the ACX2 coolers so far and those have not been released to the general consumer market yet.
Playing games like War Thunder and Elite Dangerous, the highest temperature I have seen is 67c. Ambient temps in the house right now are 23 – 25c and quite warm. The fans run a little louder at this temp, but can not be heard over the sound of the games I’m playing.
So in conclusion: This is an excellent card available now at a very reasonable price and I would not hesitate to buy it again, or another for SLI if my better half would allow it.
