Android Auto USB - No extra power

I wanted additional charging current from my 2.1A car charger along with my Ford Focus' Android Auto (AA) USB port to be able to charge the phone rather than just maintain charge while using nav from the phone. This splitter did not allow that. When only using the 'red' end to charge the phone from the car charger, my Samsung S7 only recognizes USB charging (limited to 500mA) and not AC charging. When connected only through the 'data' end to my car charger, my phone recognizes AC charging, which is the opposite of what should be happening. The 'data' end did enable AA when plugged into the Ford's AA USB port. Plugging the 'red' end into the AA USB port results in the car not recognizing the phone and not enabling AA, so I cannot swap the 2 cable ends between AA and the car charger.

This product may very well work for its intended design of providing additional current for a external hard drive, but this did not meet my personal needs.

2 quick points for those wondering about the use of this cable:
1) This cable has only 1 data-transfer connector. The 2nd USB connector is for additional power ONLY. This cable is NOT used to split a data signal between 2 devices. Its purpose is to provide added power to a USB powered device.
2) This cable is a USB 2.0 version, which is compatible with both USB 2.0 & 3.0 devices, but data-transfer rates will be limited to USB 2.0 speeds. If you want USB 3.0 speeds, you may need to spend a bit more for a similar cable with a BLUE data connector (instead of both USB port connectors being WHITE).

My experience:
I needed more power for a 1TB external hard-drive than 1 USB port would provide on my old Dell computer (drive would frequently disconnect when in use). The drive is USB 3.0 (powered through its USB connection) but my computer has only USB 2.0 ports, so went with the cheaper 2.0 cable version since my computer ports limit me to USB 2.0 data-transfer speeds either way.

Ordered from the only domestic supplier I saw (SKY-LINE 'Best Seller') that didn't have the long international shipping wait time or the Amazon minimum order (or Prime) requirement for free shipping. For their $3 cable price (free standard shipping), they shipped in 1-2 business days and I received it via USPS in less than a week (sooner than expected). Arrived in a padded shipping envelope with the product packaged in a zip-lock type plastic bag.

Product quality:
I took a couple of minutes to test the cable connectors using a simple USB device with a power LED (I connected a flash drive). Sure enough connecting 1 of the USB port connectors to my computer worked as normal, but connecting only the other connector just powered the device without my computer 'seeing' it (provided power only, no data). This confirmed that the 2nd USB port connector is for added power only, as advertised. I gave each connector a few gentle wiggles while in the ports, with no connection issues noticed.

The 2 port connectors were not labeled (Data or Power only), but my quick trial & error showed me which connector was for power only (not that this usually matters if both are connected anyway). I saw no other visible issues with this cable or its connectors. 12+ inches (30 cm) in length, with snug connectors and reasonably thick wires/insulation. The connectors do appear just a tad different from those pictured, but otherwise the photos are fairly identical to what I received.

Connected my 1TB external hard-drive and it did the trick (no disconnects since). If your external device needs a bit more power than the single USB port provides, and are fine with a USB 2.0 version, this may be well worth the $3 price-tag.

I bought this to provide external power to my DAC since the computer's USB ports were too low voltage to power it properly. This cable works flawlessly, and solves my problem. With the power side plugged into a wall adapter, there is no power draw from the data side connected to the computer according to my USB meter, so this cable can also be used for connecting OTG devices to phone without draining battery. You could also use this to break ground loops by taping over the power pins on the data side, if you like, though that's not something I need to do personally.

I've seen some very odd reviews on this. I don't think that people use it correctly. Many, if not most, car usb ports only put out 1amp so when you plug your phone in, the charging is slow. If you have 2 usb ports and put one of these into each, you are not increasing your charging ability. You are still only getting ONE charge and ONE data exchange. What you have to do is use a 12volt to usb adapter that plugs into what looks like a cigarette lighter for the cable with the RED band on it. This will give you a 2amp charge. The other cable will be into the cars usb and act as the data exchange for your phone. Hope that helps. If your car has 2amp usb port then this probably won't do anything for you.

Disclaimer aside, this product works as intended: I now use it to connect my 1TB external hard drive to my Wii U (its single plug does not give it enough power to use it, therefore I employed this method). I am glad that this method worked and is a more affordable alternative to buying a more expensive varient with a external power supply.

This cable was cheap and simple but really solved the problem as the two USB male connecters combined provide more than enough power to the dongle, something the single USB port on my TV couldn't do. With most devices it increases the current allowed through to a device, I use this on my fire tv stick as my tv usb ports only provide .75Amps so I can harvest the current from both ports to power my firth stick with no problem as if it where plugged with the power brick.
