Style: NewVerified Purchase

Worked great for a month, 2 days after I'm no longer eligible to return it the Kinect just stops working!!!! Doesn't turn on at all. I've done all of the trouble shooting from the Xbox website, still nothing. Very disappointed that I paid this much money for something that only works for a month.

Excellent accessory to get the most out of the Xbox One

I bought an Xbox One bundle a few weeks ago, and after a few days with it, I felt that there was just something missing. Scrolling to the one guide or through the settings, there's just so much more your Xbox can do. I have to say, I've always thought the Kinect was a silly novelty accessory, but I found myself wanting my Xbox to control my tv and satellite, and wanting to use voice commands to control my Xbox. Sure, I could've bought the IR cable for $20 for the tv/satellite features, but that wouldn't allow for the voice commands, so I picked up a used Kinect for just $45 more.

After setting it up, I have to say it definitely adds to the experience. Perhaps it's not a vital accessory, but it's a really useful addition. I love that the Xbox can log me or my guests in via facial recognition, tell me what shows are trending, what's on my favorite channels and my apps like Amazon and Netflix, rather than having to scroll through all those channels and apps separately. I can turn the Xbox on and off, change the volume, pause, play, fast forward and rewind, snap apps and switch between different games and tv just by telling it to do so! Maybe the motion tracking camera isn't all that necessary, but it's certainly not a bad thing to have.

Now, the Kinect is only as good as the features & games it enables, so I tried out some demos and found that Disney's Fantasia for the Kinect 2.0 is an absolutely outstanding game. I bought it almost immediately (it's very cheap on Amazon). It's a phenomenal game, fun and accessible to adults and kids alike. I cannot recommend it more emphatically! Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that there are many others that really take advantage of (or even support) the Kinect, though Battlefield 4 has some unique features. Dance Central however is rather spotty at best in its tracking ability. The game is actually pretty decent (though the dance moves can be pretty silly), but the menu is terrible to navigate. My used Kinect did not come with Dance Central Spotlight, btw.

In conclusion, as a mandatory $100 accessory, I hated the idea of the Kinect. But as an accessory that can be picked up used for around the cost of a game, I think it's an accessory that most people would benefit from, and I strongly recommend it!

Well worth the price.

If you would like a little taste of the future you need to get one of these. Why? because your able to control your xbox one and possibly your TV by mostly voice commands. With the Kinect attached to my HD cable box and connected to my home wifi I can now turn my system off and on by just walking into the room and saying xbox turn on. Or turn it all off by saying xbox turn off. But this is just the beginning. With just voice commands I can access all my games. Access my movies on, You name the app. Amazon, Hulu, Netflix. I play, pause, rewind, fast forward what I'm watching. I can access my cable TV listings. I can switch channels. Raise and lower the TV volume. I can go on and on. This thing is just amazing. Now back to reality. This is all possible but each persons individual experience will be different depending on what equipment they own. The instructions that come with the Kinect and the xbox one console are non existent. I can only guess they assume you will just google the setup. That's probably right but Microsoft should at least mention it somewhere. That being said the setup was fairly easy but did take a little time. The Kinect just plugs into the back of your Xbox. And is powered by the xbox. No additional power cord is needed. Once hooked up you should be able to go to the settings in the xbox menu and see the Kinect as a connected device. From there I just started exploring it's features. With a little help from google. Overall it was well worth the $90 I paid for it. The only drawback for me was Dance central. I have no interest in this software. I wish Microsoft would offer the Kinect without it at a slightly lower cost, offer another title in it's place or a discount on the software of your choice. Something other that here a software title that your paying for but don't want.

***UPDATE*** Oct 2016
I've had my kinect for about 7 months now and it has started to show similar problems that others have reported. More specifically trouble staying on. I havnt as yet contacted Microsoft since I have been successful in getting it to work again. But it does disconnect from time to time. What I find fascinating is I have become so trained with voice commands that it would be difficult to sever my connection with the device. I really enjoy not having to pick up a remote to turn my tv off and on. Change the volume or channels. Not to mention all the other commands that can be used. If this Kinect should stop working I would gladly buy another.

It's the future, man!

While not required for the Xbox one anymore, it certainly adds something to the experience. They do still sell a bundle with the kinect, but I opted to get it separately so I could take advantage of a deal with a 500g console + Assassins creed Syndicate + Forza Horizons 2 + the gears of War remake. So I got this Kinect and a TB HDD because 500 isn't nearly big enough.

There's not too many games for the kinect it seems; the real winner is talking to your xbox. Granted it works about 80% of the time, but turning your TV, and xbox off with voice commands, turning the volume up or down, pausing a TV show or movie, (via Plex), is pretty awesome. I can watch TV without ever touching a remote, or anything else. That's kind of an expensive novelty, but I think it's worth it.

Privacy concerns are null as fas as I'm concerned. Sure they COULD be watching you/listening to you, but they aren't. I monitor my network usage and it's definitely not sending a video feed out of my house when it's off, (or even on unless I'm using Skype). If you're really concerned you can always turn it off quickly in a menu, or even unplug it. The TV mounting kits they sell even come with privacy filters that you can pop on it to cover the lens if you want too.

I plan on getting into the Xbox Fitness app soon. It's supposed to be able to see your heart rate through the kinect, which is pretty cool. (It's free with Xbox live...) Overall if you want your Xbox one to feel like 'the future', this is the way to go.
