Ms Miller's recipes are from SCRATCH, not some overpriced, processed foods. If you want your children to taste food the way it is supposed to, absolutely scrumptious........ put your love into these good, old fashion American dishes and watch their eyes light up! Boy, do these bring back great memories of my Grandma teaching me how to cook. I miss her so much! Ms Miller, thank you for bringing back real (and not so very time consuming) food that actually tastes great; and is not called "diet". We did not gain weight eating this way growing up. I will enjoy cooking these for my family.
There are so many things about this cookbook that I like. As someone who did not take a home economics course during high school, many of the "simple" dishes in this cookbook are things that I just never learned or practiced making on my own. The recipes are easy to read and follow, and if I want to adapt one of them to whatever I have on hand on my own kitchen, it's very easy. Second, the recipes themselves are practical, but not tired. Most, if not all, of the ingredients are things that are usually stocked in the pantry. (In fact, going back to my first point, things that I had in my pantry that I had no idea how to COOK with.) Otherwise, I would think that even if you are a seasoned cook and know your way around many dishes, this is a handy guide to keep on hand and remind you of how to use simple ingredients to make a home-cooked meal. I love that the author's credos encourages us to enjoy the act of cooking and to appreciate the time spent at the table. These are some of my favorite memories from my childhood, and I would love to recreate that homey feeling at my own table as an adult.
If I had any suggestions or critiques for the author/cook, it would be that if Ms. Miller is considering a second edition, or if she is working on another volume of recipes, to include more anecdotes, as with Aunt Eva's Macaroni Salad. It's nice to read about another person's relationship with food or a certain dish, and it reveals a bit of the author's personality and love of the outdoors and fresh food. I would love to read more about her personal food experience in addition to her recipes. My second suggestion would be to include photos of the dishes themselves!
Fabulous book! I was intrigued and, subsequently, bought this book not because of any budget constraints, but because of the great recipes! Don’t think for a second that this cookbook is only for a tight budget….it’s for anyone who likes to cook delicious meals for their family and friends! Some of the recipes bring back wonderful memories of my mother’s and grandmother’s cooking…....but all of the recipes are simply delicious!
This is my new favorite cookbook! The ingredients are easy to find, and the instructions are simple and clear, quick and easy to follow. The finished dish is also very tasty! Our family is very happy with these great recipes. The fact that they are economical too is a great plus. Thank you, Dear Author! We'll be using this cookbook for years to come!
This is a very nice book. It has recipes that include ingredients that most will have on hand. I already cook a lot like the author does, but she has some ideas that I'd like to try. This is a good book for inexperienced cooks because it is easy to follow. It can build confidence in the kitchen, as well as helping your budget.
The recipes are easy to make and are tasty. Word of caution- the website at the end of the book redirects you to an adult site instead of the author's cooking website.
