Excellent game. I have never played a game that I feel such an attachment for the characters while at the same time knowing so little about them. The game takes place in a gothic city overrun by beasts and all sorts of evils. You play the role of a hunter whose job it is to rid the city of its monsters. That is the loose idea behind the game. To that end your character levels up and acquires new weapons and armor much like most RPGs. The world that was created pulls you in so thoroughly that you end up playing just to see what's around the next corner. The artwork and feel of the game are top notch. Even the music is haunting and eerie just like everything else in the game. The fact that the narrative losely progresses leaves a lot of questions and for once I don't mind that. The game world really is a rich environment with secrets, and little bits of lore lieing around that in my expirence pulled me into the game even further. Mind you if this is your first "souls" game you are in for a very hard very tough expirence. Be prepared to die and die often. Enemies are brutal and combat is fast paced. Aggressive offense is the best defense in this game (kind of different than the sword/shield of dark souls but the repeat deaths are similar.) Paying attention to patterns and knowing your own move sets while being aware of your surroundings will get you through most of the fights in the game. Even when you do learn the controls and have a good grasp on combat you will still die espically when fighting a new boss or mob. It is easy to get frustrated and fed up, but if you stick with it the sense of accomplishment when you kill a boss and see PREY SLAUGHTERED flash across the screen is incredible. The game time for a play through between me and some friends has been roughly 30-40 hours depending on your play style. The length could well be much longer if your a completionist and that is not counting new game +. (A harder mode as if it wasn't hard enough that unlocks after you beat the game.) As far as cons go I have three.... And I thought about deducting a star and giving this a 4 star review. I came to the conclusion that while the three cons I have detracted from the game, the game is good enough that I still think it's one of the best games out right now possibly one of the best that has come out in the last few years. For these reasons I have stayed with a five star rating. As far as the collectors edition goes the artbook is tiny but it is hardcover. Also the cardboard of the sleeve is nothing to write home about. To me the almost 20$ difference was worth it because absolutely love the soundtrack and the art to others though they may expect more bang per buck in that case just get the regular version. Overall I highly recommend this game if you are 1. Looking for an amazing gaming experience and don't mind gore (this game is dark and gory). 2. Are not intimidated by very challenging difficulty and willing to spend time on a game to actually better your skills in order to progress.
My three cons are 1. The frame rate can chug . Not a major deal but something to note, also not something that happens all the time. 2. The loading screens are long... This is annoying in a game where you die often because a large amount of time is spent watching a loading screen. 3. Multiplayer is awesome but it could definitely be more accessible.

Gameplay Details
Regain SystemWhen you take damage from enemies, counter-attack the enemy within a certain period of time to regain some of your lost HP. The damage taken initially turns orange, indicating you can earn it back if you are quick enough. Hesitate too long and you’ll lose that health for good. |
