Steve Scott's new release "Bad Habits No More: 25 Steps to Break Any Bad Habit" lays down a well-structured, informative and step-by-step actionable process for overcoming and eventually breaking bad habits. With all the fluff eliminated and written in a straight and concise "nothing-but-what-you-need-to-know" style, Breaking bad Habits delivers what it promises. Here is why.
The book starts with a solid intro into willpower and why you can't rely on this alone to break a habit, with a great example of what "ego depletion" is and how it relates to habit development and forming new habits. The "hot-cold empathy gap" is another great source of information unknown to many trying to break a bad habit. This is a great intro to the material because it builds a powerful tone and mood for the rest of the book.
"Bad Habits No More" is structured and built into 4 different parts.
PART I: [LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR A HABIT CHANGE]
STEPS #1-8: In the first part of the book the author sets up the foundation for changing bad habits into good ones. This is a great section to get you ready for the work that is ahead. It focuses in on the difference between a habit and an addiction, and then moves into sound advice to focus on only one habit at a time. you will learn about the 30-Day Habit Challenge , setting a start date for your new habit formation, avoiding cold turkey solutions, and the importance of creating incremental goals. Throughout the book the author uses a personal case study [Wasting time using a cellphone] to explain the effectiveness of the methods and steps, and how to apply these steps and actions to your own situations in life you are struggling with.
PART II [UNDERSTAND YOUR HABIT LOOP]:
STEPS #9-14: In this section you will learn to identify the "Habits" of your habit routine, and how you continue to feed into the behaviour even after swearing it off forever. Steve outlines this process by identifying the habit routine, recording habit triggers, creating an if-then plan, and using habit reminders to stay consistent.
Part III [BUILD A SUPPORT SYSTEM]:
STEPS #15-19 walk you through how to build a support system by creating accountability, ignoring the naysayers, making a public declaration, using a partner/sponsor to maintain accountability, and avoiding trigger locations.
PART IV: [OVERCOMING CHALLENGES]
STEPS #20-24: With clear examples provided and backed up with sound resources by Charles DuhIgg, James Clear, and Steve Guise, Steve provides greater credibility to the material for Breaking Bad habits. In addition, links are provided to useful apps you can download to support you in creating and maintaining a habit lifestyle. There are apps for staying accountable and to track your progress and level of consistency.

Pros: Relatively quick read, several solid ideas, focus on replacement habits
Cons: Limited "case study"
S.J. Scott's _Bad Habits No More: 25 steps to break any bad habit_ sets a very ambitious goal for itself, and one that only you can be the judge of whether or not it meets. At 90 pages, and broken down into discrete steps, it's a quick read either in one sitting or, more likely, broken up into smaller chunks with time to think about how you would apply it in your own life. While Step 1 is a caveat to differentiate between problems that would require or benefit from professional help and those that can be tackled with the help of the book and your support network, many of his steps draw from cognitive behavioral therapy and relapse prevention strategies developed in the context of addiction recovery. If I were to change one thing about the book it would be to add one or two more examples of using the techniques to break a habit. And if I were to take away only two pieces of advice from this book, it would be to focus not just on not engaging in your target bad habit, but in choosing to engage in your alternative replacement habit(s), and the development of your if-then plan for dealing with triggers to engage in your old bad habit.
Overall a solid, fast read, with good ideas. I would have no problems recommending this to someone looking to develop a habit change plan.

All of us have bad habits we'd like to break, instead of being stuck doing the same things year after year that impact our lives in negative ways. We make ineffectual efforts that amount to nothing because we don't have a well-reasoned plan of action.
There are helpful tips in this book. And the tips form a complete program, which is simple enough to get into your head and to actually do. As a Kindle book that I read on my laptop, I was able to copy the paragraphs that I felt were most important into one document. I then highlighted the ideas and actions I want to implement.
A few of the helpful ideas: Plan for the resistance you’ll experience along the way. Only attempt one habit change at a time. Commit to a 30-day habit challenge. Give a specific reason why it matters. Use your journal to track triggers by writing them as they occur. Track your success with a daily metric. Focus on making small changes that compound over time. Create small wins that build emotional momentum. Instead of focusing on what you’re missing, follow new routines that give you the same reward. And so on.
Scott gives examples which make it easy to understand how to implement the steps. If you're looking for a quick to read, easy to follow book to help you break your bad habits and introduce new, better replacements for them, this could be the book for you. It does require some effort to make changes, but this book helps you remove the blocks that will keep you from succeeding.

This is one of the books I read when on the treadmill (walking at 12% incline, speed 2.5 so I can read). It's how I efficiently develop my soft skills.
The principles outlined in this book for breaking a bad habit certainly will help in many cases, but there are a few weaknesses. First, his approach works best on habits that are very clearly identifiable and discrete, such as quitting smoking, watching less TV, etc. It might be less optimal when addressing bad habits such as how to criticize people less, how to stop blowing sales opportunities, etc.
I also suggest the author talk to people as research and come up with better case studies or examples. He uses his desire to look at his cell phone less as his "case study" for each topic, and quite frankly those case studies are typically one sentence or a short paragraph.
So overall a good quick read with some value, but I suggest the author focus more on quality not quantity of the books he self-publishes.

Before I read this book, I had the terrible habit of procrastination. So, I thought I'f give this a try and I am so glad I did. Mr. Scott taught me that I can break ANY clutches of a bad habit, even procrastination - which can breed laziness. Now I have learned how to manage my time more effectively, which used to be all over the place before I met up with this book. I read many other books from this author and trusted them, so I knew I couldn't lose.
He really nails down the "how to" part of it and I am such a "how" person. When you know why you got yourself into a bad habit, it shows you how to get rid of the whole thing and this takes the desire of a bad habit out, So you don't feel the need to keep doing it like you thought you did.
What a fabulous read! So, because of reading his books, l even finished an e-book that was on the backburner since 2014. Thanks Steve! Your books are right on so, Write On!
