No More War

Helps stress relief for me.

Very good CD. Clear and the song name comes up on the truck CD player. They can't steal the mind. They can try to throw me in jail for what I try to smoke, but I don't think they can arrest me, yet, for being too happy and relaxed. But they'll just plant evidence and go from there. So maybe the police can arrest me for being to happy. Anyway, resistance is not futile. Love this CD. Making up for some lost time.

Covers the full studio catalogue with some questionable selections

Every deadhead has their favorite era, mine being what's covered on the first disc, so the second disc here didn't do much for me, with some downright head-scratchers ("Far From Me" & "Blow Away"). I think if you took the whole GD catalogue with an ear for what is truly great the increasingly commercial late 70's-90's would merit less than a handful of songs, but "Althea" and "Loser" (both not included here) would surly be some of them.

I guess the unique concept here was to have them all be from studio recordings, which is fine, but even then I don't think this selection does the GD catalogue justice. Ideally there'd be a mix of studio and live to get the actual best, especially from the first decade. Such omissions from earlier would be the Europe '72 segue of "China Cat/I Know You Rider," as well as "He's Gone," "Jack Straw", "Brown Eyed Woman" and "Morning Dew" from that album, and similarly "Help on the Way/Franklin's Tower" from '75. Other songs that are missing due to too much space being given to the final years are "Mississippi Half Step...," "Cumberland Blues," "Ship of Fools," and "Wharf Rat" (again only recorded in live versions, like a lot of the greats from Europe '72). I also think the epic but ponderous "Terrapin Station" could have been replaced with "That's It For the Other One" from 10 years before to give a much better taste of why the Dead made such a lasting impression (which somehow, miraculously, sustained them through the dreck of the 80's - the Mydland years.....).

Good place to Start your Strange Trip...

I resisted the temptation to buy this best of, but I finally gave in because of the single version of Dark Star. I have it on vinyl on What a Long Strange Trip it's Been, which is a pretty good collection. Most of the time I tend to listen to Live Grateful Dead like Dick's Picks and others because of the energy and the jams. That said, I am playing the first disc of this collection a lot since getting it. I forgot how good some of the studio versions of these tunes are. When I got on the bus, there where only a few live albums available, Live Dead, Skull and Roses, and of course Europe 72. I wasn't a tape trader so these were the the live dead songs I played over and over I might add. But there are so many neat things in the studio versions like David Grisman's mandolin in Friend of the Devil and Jerry's banjo an the end of Dark Star. As all best offs there are some great tunes left out like Cumberland Blues, U. S. Blues, and one of my favorites Cold Rain and Snow. I could of also lived without the two Brent songs. No disrespect but I prefer Jerry and Bobby songs. All in all this is a very good collection. If you are new the Dead, this is a good place to start.

Honestly, one of the most enjoyable albums heard in a long time. First heard The Grateful Dead two scores ago, in school...a fella across the hall was playing "Casey Jones." Through the years have grown to like, respect them greatly.
Fidelity: Good to very good. Instrumentation, and vocals clear, timbre, sharp. Unfortunately, nary any bass, and soundstage had little depth.
Recommended.

Sampling Dead studio recordings

I give this five stars not because it's the best Dead out there, but because it's the best sampler of their studio work. As an old geezer, I'm more fond of their live recordings, especially Pigpen-era output--for my taste, many of these studio recordings seem relatively lifeless compared to live-recorded versions that really highlight the band's strengths. Nonetheless, especially for newcomers, this provides a fairly comprehensive retrospective from their first album to later works like "Fire on the Mountain" and "Touch of Grey," and short studio versions of classic live pieces like "Dark Star" and "St. Stephen." It draws most heavily from two classic albums, American Beauty and Workingman's Dead, which every Deadhead should be familiar with.

the remastering does not work in my system

the remastering does not work out well in my system. Sounds just about the worst of all my Dead music. I have all these songs already in various CDs. I thought it would be nice to have these 2 CDs collected in a pre-organized "best of" collection.
But the remastering sounds very compressed, and dull. Sounds like I am listening through a tunnel- lifeless in my system.
Maybe these were remastered to sound good as a very lossy mp3 file, I don't know.
But on my audiophile system, sounds bad, very disappointing.

Remastered with all their hits for a low price!
If your a young whipper snapper that’s going through a hippie phase and don’t mind the non live versions of this band,
This is a great start without wasting a ton of money to realize you don’t actually like them a year or 2 later!
