René Descartes was a French philosopher, mathematician, and writer. Descartes is often called the Father of Modern Philosophy, and much of early Western philosophy is a response to his writings. Descartes writing are still studied closely to this day.

Descartes was also influential in mathematics; the Cartesian coordinate system — allowing reference to a point in space as a set of numbers, and allowing algebraic equations to be expressed as geometric shapes in a two-dimensional coordinate system (and conversely, shapes to be described as equations) — was named after him.

Descartes was also one of the key figures in the Scientific Revolution and has been described as an example of genius.

This book contains highly convoluted philosophical reasoning. It may be of interest to historical philosophers but not to the rest of us. I was hoping for more mathematics for which Descartes also is noted.

This is a *MUCH* better collection of Descartes' texts on Kindle than those items I'd previously been able to scoop up from the free sites like Project Gutenberg. (The Kindle formatting of items from Internet Archive is horrible, and the .PDF files are bloody huge.) For a ridiculously low price ($0.99 when I purchased it) this provides all of the texts that a non-expert in Descartes could ever desire; one could easily teach a 200 -- 300 level course on the Early Moderns using this as one of the primary texts.

The translators are both well known, and the rendering into English is quite good. So while one might struggle with the ideas (Descartes is famous as one of the leading philosophers of the Early Modern period for a reason -- he is neither shallow nor superficial), one is not fighting through the language and puzzling over whether the translation is accurate. This is an excellent purchase for anyone looking to build a solid philosophy library on their eReader.
