About the author

New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in the area until she was nineteen. Then she became nomadic, living in five cities, four states and ten houses over the course of ten years before she moved back to her roots. She speaks English and smattering of Spanish and Chinese which she learned through an intensive Nick Jr. immersion period. Her hobbies include witty Facebook comments (in own her mind) and dancing in her kitchen with her children. (Quite badly if you believe her offspring.) Hidden talents include the gift of justification and the ability to drink massive amounts of caffeine and still fall asleep within two minutes. Her lack of the sense of smell allows her to perform many unspeakable tasks. She has six children and hasn’t lost her sanity. Or so she leads you to believe.

Then there's, Mason with his secret investigating and Joe trying to keep things in order. It's like they all have their little secrets they're keeping from each other and everyone's life seems to be threatened in danger.
Along with all this we're still reminded that Hillary's in town with all her drama, especially rudeness towards Rose. And of course the mystery girl Joe sister. We don't get much from either girl and I guess it's not quite time to find out more on how Hillary's situation is going to go and what in the world Joe's sister really is up to. Is she good? Bad? We do not know even though she tells Joe "not to worry" she's on his side and wants to help along with, telling Rose I just want to be friends really.
So once more through all this madness we are left again with the craziest shock we could of had and are left to wait and find out, why and what's going to happen. I can't believe it Denise really knows how to keep us on our toes.
This book was published in 2015, during the phase when so many writers used the cliffhanger ending, hoping to boost sales of the next book in the series. That tactic didn't work well then and now, nearly 2020, it still rankles.

At the moment, this is ruining my enjoyment of it completely!
I've finished it now, (after buying the novella), and I'm so annoyed at the ending that I'm not sure I'll read the next one. Or maybe it's a super clever ending and not just bad writing. Pah!
Similar to other reviews, I found the ending annoying, obviously it has been left open to another book, but I would have preferred to wait longer and properly get my teeth into a longer more complex book.
I'm loving seeing the relationship between Rose and Mason bloom and seeing Roses character develop seeing as she has completely changed from the Rose Gardner we met at the beginning of the first book.
