This is a professional laptop. I manage hundreds of them at work and know how reliable they are. Lenovo also has a quick and professional repair using prepaid box shipped by Lenovo. I had to repair a non Thinkpad laptop made by Lenovo and boy it took nearly 2 weeks with prepaid shipping. A ThinkPad with an i7 for less than $1.2k was a good price. I went with the base model and bought an extra 24GB of ram and a 1TB Samsung self encrypting SSD to make it a workhorse for my consulting side job.

The P50 to get.

If you are looking for a Thinkpad P50 this is configuration to get - the base model. The laptop has easy access to the hard drive and ram so you can upgrade it yourself for much cheaper.
I had Thinkpads in the past and currently have a Retina MBP. I decided to come back to Thinkpads since they are a bit cheaper and much more upgradable. The fit and finish of my Macbook Pro is better but the build quality of this P50 is still very good. The P50 however is much bulkier than a 15in Macbook Pro.
Heres why i choose this P50:
Screen: The FHD screen is IPS and has good color and view angles. I prefer this to the 4k option because of increased battery life and no issues with scaling.
Ram: 8GB is ok. The laptop has 4 slots 2 under the keyboard and 2 under the back panel. The back panel is pretty easy to access and you can upgrade to 64GB of ram (16x4)
Hard Drive: The included disk is slow. You will want to upgrade to your own SSD. This laptop can take 2x NVME and 1x 2.5in drives or 2 x 2.5in. If you get an ssd thats a 2.5in just drop in place of the existing hard drive and you are ready to go. However if you want to add an NVME or another 2.5 drive you will need to buy an adapter which is annoying. I swapped in an 256GB ssd I had around and it was noticeably better than the spinning disk.
Graphics: You get two options with the P50 the M1000M or M2000M. This has the M1000M which is marginally slower but I don't really game or do anything graphics intensive.
OS: I was initially hoping to run linux on this but I read about some compatibility issues. I settled on running Windows 10. If you also run Windows 10 make sure to turn off the MS snooping features. Don't use express settings.
Overall I'm pretty happy this P50. Solid build quality and runs pretty quickly after you upgrade the Ram/SSD. The only complaints I have are the non center keyboard (they should drop the num pad) and the need for adapters for adding hard drives.

I'm a long time, die-hard Mac user of over 20 years.This laptop is my second Windows machine since Windows NT and I have to say I am loving this machine and have not touched my Mac except to move a couple of files since I received it. I was looking at buying a new MacBook Pro, but the prices kept me from making the commitment. Then recently I looked at the system requirements for some software I need and saw that it (like so many other software titles) is Windows only and not only that but it's recommendations were for a fairly powerful Windows machine. None of the MacBook Pro's measured up to the recommended specifications - if I wanted to use this software (Arc GIS) on a Mac, I would have to do it on a desktop Mac and I would have to run the software under a Windows emulator (Parallels). I didn't want to do either of those things so I started looking at Windows laptops. One of the hardware recommendations I was looking to meet was an Intel Xeon processor, and the none of the MacBook Pro's have one, only the Mac desktops and servers do. After a little research I was excited to learn that three manufacturers (MSI, HP & Lenovo) made Windows laptops with Xeon processors! After looking at the specs for both the Lenovos, HPs and MSIs I decided on the Lenovo because for the price, it had better specifications than a comparably spec'd HP, plus it had the longest warranty overall, better build quality (MilSpec!) and reportedly didn't get as hot as the MSI. This particular machine was also about $400 less than the MSI, so the decision was an easy one. And a month later I still have a smile on my face every time I think about how much more machine I got for significantly less money than a Mac. This machine is FAST, quiet, has a beautiful display and more neat features than I care to mention. I'm still thoroughly smitten! I never imagined I could be so happy with a Windows-based computer. Oh - and it runs Windows 10, which is, in my opinion, a solid competitor to Mac OS X from a user-interface perspective.

Ive had this machine for just under 9 months and have had no issues... Until today.
Mouse pad became unresponsive so I was navigating using keys. Then the screen flickered and went out. Upon startup I get a series of beeps 3:3:1 which gives a DIMM /System Board diagnosis
Bummer... I have two OLD Dells laying around that just won't die (or run solidworks)

Lenovo ThinkPad P70 from Soft Networks is a Winner!

Great laptop form factor which goes back to the very successful W520 look and feel black form factor. There appear to be various vendors for this item. Mine was vended by Soft Networks Inc for $1,349.99. It has the Intel Core i7-6700HQ Processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.50GHz) which according to reviews and benchmarks I studied before buying, is only 5-8% less performant on most benchmarks than the much more expensive Xeon option, so unless you need max every last drop of power you can save alot by purchasing a unit like with the the i7 processor instead of a much more expensive Xeon mode. Another great thing was that it came with a single 16Gb Samsung M471A2K43BB1-CPB 16GB DDR4-2133 SO-DIMM (instead of say 4x4Gb chips) which is really great because it means I only have to buy 3x16Gb additional chips to make the full 64Gb RAM onboard and I don't have to "throw away" any chips. I got the 3 additional 16Gb chips on Amazon from Daytona Web for $79.25 each and free shipping. So far I'm very happy with the P70 from Soft Networks mostly because I was hoping it would have the single 16Gb RAM chip which it did and because it looks and feels like the W520 workhorse which I also own and have used massively and love. I give this vendor and this product 5 stars both. Remember YMMV and there is no guarantee that the vendor will always ship with a single 16Gb chip. But mine from Soft Networks came with that single 16Gb chip configuraiton. The unit was sealed in a factor box and so I believe that as long as you buy the model 20ER002KUS model you will get the single 16Gb RAM chip configuration, but again, no promises.
