I just bought another set of these. As an electronic engineer I am a bit skeptical that they will actually save my equipment but I have looked at them in detail and they use tiny MOV's to shunt high voltages to the outer ground shielding. This is a proven technology for arresting lightning but lightning is a tricky beast and there is really no way to predict if the amount of voltage coming in will all be shunted to ground or if some will pass.
The only 100% proven solution is to use expensive HDMI over Fiber optic cable and only the type that have separate power supplies on each end of the cable. These will provide 100% protection from surges coming in on the HDMI port as the port is completely electrically isolated on each end. Unfortunately they are very expensive devices in the $350+ range per unit. It's worth it if you have a $5K OLED TV but for other people the Andoer is about as good as a second option as you can get. I suggest that if you are using a cable box with a 2 prong plug that you run a ground wire to the outer metal case of the box, if it's all plastic then use a coax ground ring to hold the wire. Cable boxes are the number one items that blow HDMI ports during lightning storms. I have already had two TV's get hit by induced surges running in the cable and that was from strikes that were a few hundred feet from my house, that's why I started to use these. I took off one star because there is no guarantee this will work. If I get another big strike and find this thing gets fried and my HDMI ports are still working once its removed, I will certainly give it 5 stars and report my findings.
I gave this device 4 stars because it does use proven technology. The question is will it hold up to the real thing with those tiny MOV devices inside the unit.

After having these on my equipment for almost 9 months we just had another lightning storm pass by. Sure enough a bolt must of hit within a half mile of my house and sent induced current down the cable TV line. Just like the last time it blew out the HDMI port on the TV and it actually seemed to feedback the current to the Cable box because it also blew the HDMI port on the cable box. So now I have two damaged devices and I am sitting here wondering what to do next. This has gone from a 4 star to Zero Star device in my opinion.
