Pros: The locations and discussions of Cleopatra's behavior are interesting. The expert's explanations of events in Cleopatra's life are well informed.
Cons: However, the graphics consist of a few cheap looking cartoons.
Summary: This show needs computer graphics or costumed actors to show the action. The cartoons detract from the episode.
Cleopatra's bad behavior is rated without much comparison (only comparing her to other historic leaders judged as behaving badly) to norms of the day. For example, it is never mentioned that Octavion had most of Cleopatra's children killed after he came to Egypt. Caesarion, Caesar's son, nearly escaped to India, as Cleopatra intended, but Augustus lured his tutor to bring him back so the boy could be killed. Only Selene II, the daughter of Mark Anthony, survived the purge. She later married King Juba and became Queen of Mauretania, present day Morocco.
Even though the temple at Dendra is shown, it is never mentioned that an eclipse at the beginning of Cleopatra's reign, shown on the temple ceiling, may have convinced Cleopatra that she had the approval of the gods to be sole ruler of Egypt. Her rumored death by snake bite is discussed, but it is never stated that she believed that death via a sacred snake would help her to the afterlife. Remember there is a cobra on her crown. In short, some discussion of her religious beliefs would have helped to put Cleopatra's behavior into context.
JC episode--straight up it is at least PG-13. All of the action happens in blur though--both violence and sex. But you know, high school students can handle some of that. An interesting video with a mix of animation and forensics. Definitely preview before you show. Sure most school approve everything History Channel, but this isn't Pawn Stars.
of bygone eras. Fascinating look at some of the bad boys (and girls) from ancient times. The 'psycho scale' rating system adds scientific weight to the program. Fun, interesting and worth watching, especially for history buffs.
I studied psychology in college, so I liked this show. It analyzed psychopathic characteristics of many famous conquerors and legends. It was a refreshing perspective and I hope there are more seasons.
