Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, we’ve lost hope.

I thought that maybe it was just me, but after reading these reviews, I see that it’s not. I was excited that DICE took over this franchise, but wasn’t sure if I was bored because the game was lacking, or because I’ve started to grow tired of the Battlefield series? Bad Company 2 seems to be the last game of theirs that I truly enjoyed.

The graphics, animations, and sounds are terrific! Endor looks amazing! I never thought it was going to look that good. And the PS4 holds up without any frame rate drops. I’ve had problems like that with Fallout 4 when there’s a lot of action on screen. But the worlds just feel empty and lack character if that’s possible. Not sure what it is, but they don’t make me feel all Star Wars warm and fuzzy inside.

Shooting seems to be movie accurate. It’s better to just shoot from the hip and hope you hit something, because zooming in is going to be a pain to hit anything because you’ll take too much time lining up your shot before you get killed.

I do not enjoy flying. They dumbed down flight controls. You do everything with one stick. Left stick is for throttle, which you have to fly at the slowest anyway to be able to see what you’re doing.

This game should be so much better. I still would have purchased it even after seeing some bad reviews. But I feel that it needs more. It also needs less. Maps are at times too small and at times too large. I feel no real Star War connection with the game. Would have loved to have seen a Dark Forces type single player.

The Good..and the overwhelming bad..

Starwars Battlefront was a cornerstone of my early teen years for both me and my brother. We played religiously and stayed up far too late on test nights and huddled around inside on the weekends around our game system. When Battlefront for the new age systems were announced my friends and family were pumped. We had built quite a tight nit grouping from our years of playing Battlefield and Elder Scrolls Online and even the earlier years with Black Ops and Black Ops 2.

When the Beta was released the group of 5 of us booted up our systems, downloaded the beta and charge in knowing that this would be the greatest shooter we had played to date and would be here for years to come. This thinking and the pounding in our chests quickly evaporated. Within a few hours I turned the beta off very displeased and disheartened. Limited maps? Limited weapons? No customization? These are things we had become accustomed to in most games these days, not only first person shooters. Racing games, RPGs, open world games, they all had one thing in common, play how YOU want to play with near unlimited customizations. I kept my preoder thinking that this was only the beta and the rest of the game would be great, little did I know this was wrong, too.

The full game released and our group jumped in again hoping things would be better and for a while they were. But more on this below.

Cons:
- Two man party system: Why any developer would think this was okay is beyond me. Through all the Battlefield franchise you have always had the ability to drop in on your squad of guys. This was to keep team work a focal point of the game and make sure you were always with friends or groups you liked. The biggest problem with the party system is that you cannot see the rest of your party easily in the game. Only your partner has this orange color. No one else. This makes effectively playing in a group of players damn near impossible. Want to play with your four other friends, too bad. They are on the same team as you but there’s no indicator on who is who on the map which makes it hard when the only people you can trust are those in your party. Furthermore sometimes you will be put into a game that’s nearly full and some of your party doesn’t make it in as well. Oh, did I mention no voice communication? Teamwork can go right out the window.

- Lack of maps: Seriously, three maps at release with different variations depending on game mode? Are you serious? Even Call of Duty who releases one game a year has more. Sure, they have added some through DLC but it blows my mind why they would limited maps. You have an unlimited amount of planets to choose from in the Starwars Universe, why would you drop the ball on this? Yes, in most games there are maps that are played more frequently than others because of how fun or enjoyable there are. A lot of people have compared this to BF3 or BF4 where most people played the same maps over and over again, however, they were also much larger in scale with much more people. I’d rather not play capture the flag style on Battlefront on the same three maps (at launch) until my eyes started to bleed. Note: Game modes are coming up shortly to be talked about.

- Lack of customization: This game has customization but is very limited. Most of the weapons stats are identical. You cannot change appearance or many customizations for the weapon itself. You have a main weapon and two cards to choose from that help during the course of the battle. This is where you get your secondary weapon at if you choose and any additional grenades or other perks. You can change the appearance of your character slightly but not entirely. It seems the game doesn’t reward level very well as one of the best weapons in the game you acquire close to when you start.

- Lack of game modes: Battlefront offers nine total game modes to players (at launch), which in theory sounds like plenty. You’ve got the larger ones focused on Walker Assault and Supremacy, which each allow 40 players to go at it, along with the much smaller modes such as Cargo and Droid Run with 16 players on the battlefield for players who don’t like all out chaos and being rail roaded with no idea what’s going on. Walker Assault and Supremacy seem to be the meat of Battlefront. The other game modes seem to be less in depth and more watered down versions of Walker Assault and Supremacy. I have never been a big fan of the larger game modes, across most games. I like the smaller team on team action because a small group can make a larger difference (goes back to playing with friends in a party) but it looks like the smaller game modes got the shaft and the majority of the game was focused on a few larger game modes.

- Lack of single player: If anyone was to look through some of my reviews of other video games I mention that single player isn’t that important to certain games, one instance being Call of Duty. Some games are bought knowing that its main use is multiplayer. I am however, surprised this game does not have a single player. Instead, the game offers missions in the form of training, battles and cooperative survival. This honestly feels like it was thrown in to excuse the game from not having single player and I would have been thrilled at this, however the co-op survival lacks so bad that it’s almost a problem in itself. You can only have 2 players do a survival which takes most of the air out of the sails when you think about wanting to get a group of your buddies together to take down some storm troopers! We quickly found it this isn’t the case. The lack of maps in survival is also pretty abysmal as well as any sort of customization regarding survival. They throw in random tasks every few waves but other than that there’s no other objections. Why not include a co-op campaign?

- Lack of heroes: If I am not mistaken Star Wars Battlefront 2 had 23 or so different heroes to choose from spread across 4 factions. In EA’s Battlefront we have six, three for each faction. Although at first playing with these are fun the lack of variety starts to show up the longer you play map to map. In the dogfight game modes where it’s ship vs ship in the air with no ground units this drops to two heroes.

Pros:

- Graphics: Stunning. Beautiful. Left me in awe on my 4K 50” TV. The visuals are very crisp and clear. On console the frame rates are locked which most PC gamers don’t like but it’s a beautifully designed game.
- Sound: STARWARS. On a 7.1 surround sound this is magnificent. It sounds exactly like the Starwars universe should. Every explosion, every jet that flies by to the awesome sound tracks, it’s spot on and perfect.

Battlefront isn’t a terrible game and I have had fun and put in plenty of time into the game but have recently just stopped playing all together. For a triple AAA title to of produced something with such an iconic name is a shame. For full price of $59.99 it’s north worth it, but if the game were close to $30 I believe this would be a great price point for it.

Pros:
The game looks amazing. It sounds amazing. It brings an intensity to warfare in the Star Wars Universe I never could have imagined. It also does a great job allowing first or third person view. Having the partner feature was cool, but a squad feature would have been cooler.

Cons:
Provides a lot of dumb things that don't increase the enjoyability of the game. It's like DICE And EA went George Lucas on Battlefront 2 and added a bunch of dumb s*** for no reason and then ruined a lot of the great things about it.
- In the conquest mode you can't pick which capture point you spawn at. Who the hell thought that was a good idea? If someone is capturing your point you can't pick to spawn there. If you want to pick a point for a strategic advantage you can't. It's ridiculous.
- The aircraft physics are pretty awful. Aircraft are pretty pointless for anything other than attacking AT ATs.
- No missions in outer space, no boarding capital ships.
- not a lot of maps.
- Purchasable dlc's add new maps but really awful alternative modes of game play that don't add to playability.
- Most of the purchasable unlocks via credit are simple aesthetic enhancements to your character with no in game value and only change the head of the character for the rebels except for a few really high level models for the empire.
- There is no Republic/CIS

They could have made the weapons customizable, the uniforms, all sorts of neat things from the Star Wars Universe but they didn't. Most of the game is spent chasing charge icons to use special abilities or power ups. The game modes were not created for balance. I have yet to play a game that was close. They're always blow outs for one side or the other. You either stomp the other team or get stomped. they got rid of vehicle spawning and instead you fly a vehicle if you can chase down a vehicle power up. The rebels have no ground vehicles. Only the empire does: AT ST and AT AT. They really didn't do their homework on the plethora of Star Wars vehicles.

The customizable classes were cool: you get to put together your skill set and equipment, but you can only change your primary weapon once the game starts. So you're stuck with all your other equipment for the rest of the game (awful idea, why did they do that?)

I hoped DICE would bring many great features of Battlefield 3 and 4 to this game, and instead they brought nothing new and took away much of what previous versions of Battlefront offered. If this is a preview of what Battlefield 1 is going to be like, I'm apalled.
