Best one yet!!! I’ve read all three of Kaplan’s books and while all give you the feeling of having him by your side as a personal mentor, his most recent book What You Really Need To Lead: The Power of Thinking And Acting Like An Owner, really puts the onus on you. As in his previous books, he continues to give you the tools to effectively put his lessons into practice through his suggested follow-up steps.

Kaplan reminds us that being a leader isn’t some far-fetched idea left to the lucky few with an innate set of characteristics or ability to inspire. It starts in your own mind. Your willingness to act and think like an owner, even if you don’t have an executive title or the task at hand doesn’t fall within your job description—acting and thinking like an owner is what will set you apart as a leader. Adopting this mindset, along with a lifelong commitment to learning, asking questions and opening yourself up despite the potential for vulnerability will make you a strong leader. This book isn’t just for those already in leadership roles or mid-career professionals looking to get ahead; valuable lessons can be found and translated for today’s youth as well. I encourage you to read it and share it with those around you!

An excellent book for anyone striving to be a great leader.

This is another great book on leadership by Robert Kaplan. His previous books have been extremely helpful to me personally and professionally and this one takes the challenge of "how to be a great leader" to the next level. In particular, I find the format and in depth listing of specific steps very useful. As the leader of a company, I am always looking for effective ways to lead and improve the communication I have with my employees. What You Really Need to Lead, highlights the necessary tools I need to follow as I mentor other leaders and department heads that report to me. I think anyone striving to be a great leader will want to add this book to their library.

The book does not try to reinvent the wheel but sheds a different light on the situation many of us are facing. The questions and topics raised are very helpful to reflect upon oneself. This is probably the greatest strength of the book. It does not try to preach a way to the light but tries to guide on the first steps leaving it up to the reader how to go further.
