Vincent: Art Masters Series Kindle & comiXology

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 122 ratings

The turbulent life of Vincent van Gogh continues to serve as a source of inspiration for many people. In this graphic novel, artist and writer Barbara Stok takes the reader on a journey to the brief and intense period of time that the painter spent in the south of France.   Vincent dreams of setting up an artists' house in Arles for himself and his friends. However, his attacks of mental illness confuse and disorient him, culminating in the notorious incident with his ear and leaving his dreams shattered. Throughout all of this, Vincent's brother Theo stands by him, offering constant and unconditional support.   Van Gogh was passionate about his art. His ideas about success, setbacks and how to create a meaningful life provide an interesting counterpoint to our age of individualism and commercialism. Stok has succeeded in turning the experiences of this 19th-century artist into a story that is relevant to our own times.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Stok has drawn an emotional, informative, and inspirational biography for artists and art lovers everywhere. Fantastic.”―Library Journal online (starred review)

“While approximating Van Gogh, she sticks to her own elemental, comic strip–like style that suggests both a simplified Tintin and a more complicated
Peanuts.”―Booklist

“This inventive art biography eschews the usual visual cliches and brings its subject into a sharp and sympathetic focus.”―
Publishers Weekly

“Ms. Stok’s story of Van Gogh goes to dark places, following the artist’s obsessive work ethic and manic outbursts into a clear psychotic episode.”―
New York Observer

A riveting experience full of color, joy, sadness, and works of art
This book has been critically acclaimed and it should definitely be given an award I say. This graphic novel on Vincent is as good as graphic novels can get, a forgotten gem you should get while you can. Something attracts me so much about it, the style, the life of Van Gogh. Overall this piece is excellent in portraying Van Gogh’s life, capturing his personality perfectly. Reading the reviews got my hopes up very high, and so I was quite nervous if it didn’t meet my expectations. But frankly no book can normally meet all these reviews at once, but I was happy too read it none the less. The book does an amazing and spectacular job at putting us in the shoes of Van Gogh, because reading this we can relate to what he does and why he does them, and if we were to read this from a third person perspective, it wouldn’t be as good of an experience. He does irrational things yes, but the author uses her ability to make us sympathize with Vincent almost too a T. Like other reviewers have noted, there are dots around his head depicting his manic state or a state of annoyance, dots around the panel when he is having an episode of psychosis, swirls in his eyes when he’s ill, about to have an episode, or while he has an episode. The colors turn purple and green whilst he suffers an episode, squiggled and bent lines around him when he’s mad. Frankly a lot goes into expressing his state of mind that I still cannot thank the author enough for showing so well.

It's a comic not a book with many words. It has great colors. Easy "reading".

Desperately sad, tortured, and somehow still lovable--Vincent van Gogh is familiar to everyone today. It's hard to imagine that he was an isolated, unappreciated figure for almost his entire life and that fame and success had only just begun to approach when he put an end to his life. Stok's pictorial account is touching, sometimes amusing, and sometimes filled with deep pathos. Her illustrations of Vincent's psychotic episodes are deeply disturbing and harrowingly effective. Clever suggestions (stipples in the air, disorganized backgrounds) are used to evoke his varying states of mental instability. Vincent's relationships with his beloved brother Theo and (eventual) sister- in- law Johanna Bonger are shown with great tenderness. Highly recommended. The English translation is a good one.

A bit too simplistic, even though illustrations are attempting to mimic Van Gogh style. Very concise and simple, but still nice.

Charming and historically accurate. I've read all of Van Gogh's letters (800~ of them) twice, and I can firmly say that this book is very accurate. If you don't want to read the letters, and still want to have a taste of Van Gogh's world, this graphic novel is spot on. Well... of course, it has been reviewed and assisted by the Van Gogh Museum, so you are dealing with high quality curated content.
