I found that the jaws are indeed small enough to clamp around a small wire near a circuit board. For others who want/need to know, the jaws are 1.125 in. wide, 0.65 in. thick. The hole is 0.33 in diameter, centered 0.50 in. from the end and can clamp around a wire which is ~0.4 in. from a surface.
The Power LED did not light up when the unit was switched from OFF to the measurement settings. I opened the battery compartment which is secured by a tiny Phillips screw. Fortunately, you don't have to take the screw all the way out to remove the battery cover, which will help to prevent losing it. I found there was a 9V battery installed but its voltage was down to 1.26 V. Maybe the unit was left in the measure settings when packaged. After the battery was replaced, the Power LED comes on. The Low Bat LED flashes as the unit is switched to OFF. The manufacturer should consider shipping the unit with no battery installed and with a fresh battery.
I haven't made any measurements yet, but I decided to order the CA60 based on the reviews from others regarding accuracy and use. I like the appearance and construction and it seems like it will be easy to use.
However, for electronics use, this may not be what you are looking for. The accuracy example given in the manual is a pipe dream! I experimented extensively and under certain tongue arrangements you can obtain some pretty good results, but I found it more of a case of maybe 2 out of 5 tries where I could get this to line up with reality (I have calibrated equipment that can accurately resolve better than 0.001mV and 0.001mA).
Below 1A it really starts to stray and below about 200mA the readings are simply too random to be of any use. In almost all current ranges, it cannot output anything more accurate to your DMM than about +/- 5mV, which translates to +/- 50mA (0.05A). Real world, I think I would intrinsically trust it to within 100mA (0.1A). Yes, you can tease out much better results, but I'm not carrying tons of equipment along to verify the measurements every time!
There is the popular UT210E which has a 2A range that is typically accurate in the single digit mA range. So if you need low-current capability, that might be a good choice. But it can't go where the CA-60 can...
The overall quality seems good. The plastic feels solid, although the 9V battery door is a weak point. Made in Taiwan.
UPDATE: I was able to obtain better DC results by following some specific steps:
- avoid noisy (EMI) environments
- zero the meter by holding the button down for about 5 seconds
- make sure the wire being clamped is not floating, so have it connected to ground or similar. If it is floating, the meter will pick up interference from the wire when you go to zero the reading.
- absolutely do not move the meter AT ALL once it is zeroed.
With this I was frequently able to obtain 1mV (10mA) accuracy for low current measurements. High current measurements are still frequently off by around 0.1A as stated above.
Picked up a Fluke 771 to be able to get the ultra-low range. It's a lot more expensive but is in a different league. For anything under 100mA, it is the way to go.
Update: I've been using this to read injector pulse, fuel pump draw, coil circuit draw, parasitic draw. All with excellent results. Highly recommend for automotive use.
