About the Author

Anne Peterson likes playing with words. She is a published author of six books, four of which are children's books. In addition to Sonny Follows His Heart, she has written Emma's Wish, The Crooked House and Lulu's Lunch. Anne has also written two non-fiction books, Broken: A Story of Abuse and Survival, and Real Love: Guaranteed to Last. Most recently, Anne has collaborated with Jessica Peterson to produce the poetry books, StoryLines, and Make Believe. Anne's poetry has sold in stores throughout the United States and in 23 countries. She is the published author of over 42 Bible studies and over 30 articles with christianbiblestudies.com. Sonny is a guitar born - or made - to play the blues. But when his friends tell him he should try something else he goes on a musical journey. He is not happy though, and in the end learns to follow his heart, as the title says.
This is a sweet little book with the story told through lyrical poetry, and illustrated in a unique and lovely style. The message is an important one and shown through Sonny's experiences instead of told.
I thoroughly recommend this book - poetry, delightful illustrations and a positive message in the one little book.

Those of us who have read Anne Peterson’s books know by now that no matter how small and cute, they are always packed with value. “Sonny Follows His Heart” is another story with an important message: No matter what others tell you that is best for you, always do what feels good in your own heart!

Sony is a guitar that loves playing the blues. Influenced by his friends’ opinions he ignores his own heart. After much heartache, he realizes what he is meant to do. This book might seem like a fun, children’s book. Sonny however could very well be one of the many adults who vacillate between different views and courses of action and end up dying with their own song unsung.

The illustrations are vibrant and fun and each one matches Sonny’s mood that Anne’s verses so rhythmically bring forth. They are done by Anne’s talented husband, Michael Peterson, who not only creates visual art—these are done by a computer mouse—but also plays and teaches the guitar. Talented man! Talented family!

I enjoyed reading this book and I know my grand children will as well. Looking forward to its physical form!

A story with heart and plenty of eye appeal

Sonny's got the blues in more ways than one. He finally figures out that happiness lies in doing his own thing, not everyone else's.
The message is upbeat, and the story is charmingly told in child-friendly verse.
What really lifts this little book far above the crowded shelves is Mike Peterson's art. My eyeballs are still basking in the glow of his bold, colorful illustrations. I gather from the bio blurb in the back of the book that Mr. Peterson is a blues man himself, and he nails that bluesy vibe, as well as the sense of the matching text, in every picture. I can't imagine a child who wouldn't be drawn to these illustrations like a magnet.
My only quibble with the book was with the very small type used in the text.
Overall, though, a clear winner. 5 stars and A-Plus.

I have great affection for this little fable with a BIG Punch !!! At a time when I have been weighing in the balance questions of
my direction and the influence of others, this story was medicine.The first thing that made me smile were Michael's drawings.
And then , Anne's simple , but direct fable of searching . I liked the stripped down no-nonsense "trickster cycle" flavor. It is
what I will call a " ricochet kids story" , one aimed at children , but that hits the grown-ups too !!! Well done , Anne and Michael !!!!
I also liked that "our Hero" is an instrument !!! If any of us feel like instruments at times ( hehe ) we can find some solace knowing that
even a Guitar named Sonny ....yes, can follow his heart. Amen.

Another great book by Anne Peterson that I highly recommend for your children or grandchildren. The illustrations were done by Anne's husband Michael and they are vibrant, fun and spot on. Each illustration matches Sonny’s mood at the time. Great reading with great life lessons about being who you really are and being ok with that. Wonderful storyline that will encourage kids to be unique. This book is especially good for those who are artistic, musically gifted, or uniquely different from what society expects. Sonny is a guitar that loves playing the blues. Sonny is influenced by his friends’ opinions and he begins to ignore his own heart. Sonny finally realizes what he is meant to do and does it.

Beautifully illustrated book with an important message that kids will love

In this book Sonny, the guitar, finds himself in a dilemma. Will he do what he others want or what feels right to him? This is a questions that "kids" of all ages can relate to. It is also the reason why I instantly fell in love with Sonny.

This cute story, which is accompanied by gorgeous illustrations, delivers a very important message in a fun way. We can all learn from Sonny and his friends.

As a former teacher, I feel comfortable recommending this book without hesitation.
