Kill Your Idols Kindle Edition
In an America where militias, doomsday cults and self proclaimed Prophets are as commonplace as gas stations and fast food restaurants, The American Idol Company is born.
Operating under the belief that scandal and controversy will increase sales, the company founders manage to insult everyone from the Pope to the Ayatollah, inspire a generation, and come dangerously close to starting World War 3.
“A hilarious, fantastic and crazy adventure that had me forgetting Douglas Adams is no longer with us!” ---Robert S. Wilson, Bram Stoker Award-nominated editor and author of the Empire of Blood and Ray Garret/Lifeline series.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2017This was a fun read by S.C. Hayden. The basic premise has been covered by others, so I won't rehash that here- it's a fun tale that is completely irreverent to about every group out there, and keeps you entertained while doing it. If you take yourself too seriously, I might recommend it anyway, as it's probably good for you. If you don't, then definitely read it, as you'll enjoy the poking at various groups.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2017Note: this book appears the same story with minor revisions as another book by the same author titled, "American Idol."
This novel is a light read and is filled interesting observations of American culture and psychology. The author makes many fun pokes on our country's proclivities, insightful explanations for why they do the things they do. Unfortunately, he does it more as the narrator rather than through the thoughts & actions of the characters themselves which would have made the story a bit more satisfying. Our mysterious narrator speaks with such colorful and opinionated tones I kept waiting for him to be introduced as a character within the story -which never happened. This strong narrator is not uncommon (especially in humor genre) after Vonnegut set the tone for intelligent social satire. As it is the main characters, both male & female, come and go without much distinction which is a shame because they are all introduced as and seem to occupy roles of caricatures, ready to drive the social commentary.
But if one approaches this novel as a light read, entertainment on the beach while gaining bite-sized insights into the absurdities of our American culture, it weaves a captivating story that moves right along to an unexpected ending. Well worth reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2017This was a fun romp that works on a number of levels. It's a light, fast, summer read that is also scattered with commentary on the modern world...and the ancient world...ok, pretty much all of the world and her history. I found myself nodding as I caught pieces that applied to the 'real' world and laughing out loud at other times. This must have been a fun book to write!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2017A great read, glad to see it back in print!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2020Great Book. Gave as a gift anf they loved it!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2017This novel is darkly hilarious. Hayden does an amazing job satirizing religion without using supernatural, ex machina plot devices. He alternates seamlessly between observational/situational humour and soul crushing commentary on the human condition and religion's role in society. If you enjoyed "Lamb" by Christopher Moore, you will LOVE THIS BOOK!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2017A very enjoyable readily does not take itself too seriously but yet has a timely message. It is in the same vein as Douglas Adams and Terry Prachett. The characters and humor reminds me of them. These are two giants that have no equal but this is a nice taste of them.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2017Great book! It really lays bare the gullibility of the masses, while cleverly pointing out the power of belief. It was very different and I enjoyed it a lot.
