A highly recommended futon!

I feel that this futon needs an actual review. I have slept on this futon for about 3 weeks now and I tell you what, it is as comfortable as any mattress I've had that is fairly firm.

BACKGROUND ON ME: I slept on a brick for a mattress for 8 months and then a ridiculously soft mattress for 2 weeks after that prior to sleeping on this futon and sleeping on a soft mattress killed my back but I became accustomed to it quickly. I was moving into a very small space and since I'm in college I'll be moving at least once or twice more, and one of those possibly being overseas so compactness and versatility is definitely necessary.

MY SLEEP EXPERIENCE: Having adjusted to a soft mattress prior to sleeping on this meant that I was definitely in for an adjustment period. It didn't take very long to adjust to it and I still find myself sleeping on my side and it's no less comfortable than sleeping on my back or stomach, though this is likely due to the fact that I have a firm side-sleeping pillow. I find myself getting very restful sleep and as much as I'm afraid of bugs, since you need to take good care of the flooring you place the futon on I don't feel concerned about bugs.

FUTON QUALITY: It's very thick, I think I would've had issues sleeping on my side had I purchased the Rococo version of this futon. It's very nice thick cotton and it folds very easily, especially since it came folded in the package it arrived in. Even though it folds, there's really no noticeable fold flattening where the cotton kind of thins because its been folded so many times.

YOUR OPTIONS: So there are other options on the futon market, there's the J-life shiki-futon which in my opinion looks like the cotton is going to flatten out or get all moved around inside and become bumpy in places. The Tuft & Needle mattress, I feel, can no longer be listed as a futon mattress, it is far to wide to fold and was never really meant to be a tri-fold mattress of any sort. I can easily see this futon mattress from EMOOR lasting several years if not many if you take care of it right (If I remember it, I'll come back at a later date and update how the quality is holding up).

MY OPINION: I spent almost 4 months trying to determine what/which futon mattress to buy because I knew I wanted to move either cross-country or across the world and with a futon I could take it with me more easily than a traditional mattress. It also makes moving apartments way easier! All that being said, I think if you're set on buying a futon because they're just awesome and space-saving, save yourself the time and frustration of decision-making and get this. I feel like I'm sleeping more restfully now because I'm not sleeping on a mattress that is a brick but also not sleeping on jello.

PS: It will say that it's going to take a month to arrive or longer but EMOOR used expedited international shipping so I got it in just under 2 weeks.

Below is the mattress cover I purchased, it's more expensive than a normal fitted sheet but it has a zipper closure and is very nice, it has a wonderful clean cotton-y feel and keeps both sides of my futon off the floor and more resistant to any mites or bacteria on the floor.

When I opened it, I thought "they've sent me a mattress pad!". It was nicely vacuum packed, but didn't expand to 3" thick! I was expecting a traditional Japanese kakebuton - the kind I use at grandma's house in Japan - but this is a thin, lightweight mat that we'd normally put on top of a ticker base futon. We had to place it on a foam bed pad to make it comfortable enough to sleep on. Note that the manufacturer claims this futon is 39 x 83 x 3 in. (100 x 210 x 8 cm) but it's 2" thick - see the photo.

Solid at a Good Price.

I bought a Tatami mattress a year back to handle the problems of aging but I could never find an appropriate cushioning for it. I was hesitant to buy a mattress online but with my Christmas bonus I decided to give it a chance. This mattress works for me. It's not too thick (only 3 or 4 inches) but that's absolutely perfect for what I'm looking for because it still gives me the firmness and support of the tatami mat while giving enough cushioning for my hip and shoulders. My whole set up cost about 400 dollars and for that I have a bed that gives me a solid nights sleep, alleviates back pain and takes up a small amount of bed space and, from my understanding, should last me a full decade. Even if I have to replace one or the other at 200 a piece this mattress is a sound financial investment.

I find it to be perfectly comfortable with 2 stacked together. I couldn't get comfortable on just one.

I had been using one futon with a foam topper underneath but decided to buy a second futon to stack as suggested by others. I am pleased with the doubled futon and sleep well. I was not able to get comfortable on just the one futon.

The covers (I have 3) are of good quality and true to color. I've washed and dried them without issues. The zipper doesn't appear to be in danger of failing anytime soon.

There have been no signs of mildew on the mattress. I air it out regularly, although not daily. The cover is supposed to help with this, which it must be, since I've had issues with mildew in the same room with floor mattresses in the past. It is easy enough to trifold and stack in my bedroom as needed.

If you're interested in the product I would recommend it. It came in a compact package faster than expected. I can't stress the high quality of the stitching and fabric enough. I'm quite sensitive to scents/chemicals as well (hives and rash from Tide detergents, etc.) and I had no issues with the mat or the cover.

I hate American bedding, springs, memory foam, all of it. I have had ones in the thousands on down to $300, hated them all. So I first tried JLife and their all cotton Japanese futon mat. It was really nicely made and comfortable but too heavy and gets matted down if you don't regularly fluff it.
I've had the EMOOR for a few weeks now and love it, absolutely love it. The EMMOR mat is LIGHT, very Light, easy to fluff, to move around and just feels clean. I built a fir/cedar platform bed with half inch slat spacing on the platform planks. Than I have two layers of the Walmart puzzle piece exercise mats, cut to fit, on top of that lays the EMOOR mat. The first night was a transition and after that it got better and better. I wake right up with no weird back issues, my posture has also improved. Several years ago I suffered a bad back injury and I wish I did this sooner!
If you want a clean, really natural experience you should try it. I wouldn't suggest just the mat, I'd go with any number of foam pads under it. Thickness and firmness is going to depend on you. Covering it is going to be a choice too, you can buy a cover from EMOOR or sew together a giant pillow case from two flat sheets. I designed my bed frame to have a fitted over the mat, foam and grab the wood frame (I'm a decent carpenter not a seamstress).
