Rose Darrow is lost.

After her mother passes away, the running of the family farm falls to her. Her father, John Darrow, is just too grief stricken to do much of anything except exist in a cloud of depression. So the running of the farm falls on her shoulders. She spends every waking moment tending the cattle, working the crops and what little time is left over is devoted to school. Her graduation is coming up.

Normally a source for excitement, Rose doesn’t feel any joy at all. Her life had been filled with plans, places she wanted to go to, things she wanted to see. Now it’s filled with the endless hours of taking care of the farm, the livestock and her father. There is no room for anything else.
She puts her dreams aside, never to be seen again.

Bodhi Lowell is trying to escape his past.

Growing up as the son of an abusive and alcoholic father has left him with a few scars, most of them invisible to the world. After his mother passes away, he leaves home and fends for himself, mostly working on farms to get what experience he needs. He even changed his name to leave his past behind.

When Rose’s aunt Marty hires Body for the summer to help out on the farm, he thinks this will be just what he needs. Make a little money before his dream of flying off to Europe comes to life. What he doesn’t plan on is Rose.

There is something about her that calls so him, that’s like Bodhi already knows her. He senses her pain and sorrow and knows that something has happened to her, but Bodhi doesn’t push. If she wants to tell him, she will.

When the two meet, there are sparks and those sparks turn into fireworks. However, will those fireworks be snuffed out when Rose learns of Bodhi’s plans to leave? Or will they prosper? When love is involved, it’s anybody’s guess.

I love this book. Nope, I heart it. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that touched me so deeply and on so many different levels.
Michelle Zink delivers a powerhouse of a novel, that touches on a lot of subjects that aren’t in your typical young adult novel: death, abandonment, abuse, alcoholism, isolation. At the same time, she’s written a novel that shows the healing powers of time and, most importantly, of love.

Rose isn’t your typical heroine and Bodhi isn’t your typical hero. The two have their own issues, their own pasts, and together they find a way to move on from those pasts and form a bond with each other. The secondary characters of Lexi, Will, John Darrow and Marty add spark and life to the novel, but make no mistake, this is Rose and Bodhi’s book.

The journey they go on together is so believable and so all consuming that I found myself cheering at this book, laughing out loud and, quite a few times, crying both out of sadness and out of joy. In the end, it didn’t feel like I was holding a book. It felt as if I were holding life itself.

I really connected with Bodhi. His struggle mirrors my own and the emotional depth that she brought to him is so real, so powerful, that I couldn’t help but be moved by him. And which one of us hasn’t lost a family member they love? The emotion encased within A Walk in the Sun is so real.

I really enjoyed this sweet book. The characters had depth and grit and were real. I was drawn in right away. I liked the details that the writer included regarding farming. I enjoyed that Rose and Bodhi had good hearts, and each were overcoming their own issues, but were made better by each other. Very well written and an enjoyable read!

A wonderful love story

Rose is running her family's farm on her own. Her mother passed away and her father is severely depressed, so she has taken over all of his jobs. She had a lot of plans for her future, but she had to put everything on hold to take care of the farm and her father. Fortunately her aunt has arranged some help for the summer. Bodhi is a wanderer. He goes from farm to farm and never stays anywhere for a very long time. He's saving his money to travel, to see more of the world. When he meets Rose everything changes. They both aren't looking for love, but sometimes it just happens. Can they make it work or is it too much for them to handle?

A Walk in the Sun is a sweet story about two people who deserve to be loved and cherished. Both Rose and Bodhi have such good hearts and they are kind and caring. I liked them immediately. I love reading about animals and Michelle Zink's vivid description of the farm made it come to life very well. I enjoyed reading about the cows and the horses, about the daily routines and the way they handled the crises. I fell in love with the setting straight away, it's beautiful and it's the perfect background for a romantic story.

A Walk in the Sun is an easy read, but the topics Michelle Zink writes about are quite deep. Rose has lost her mother and she's grieving while she also has to keep the farm going. Bodhi had a rough past and it broke my heart to read about everything he went through. Michelle Zink describes everything in a compassionate way. The story is intense, but due to the fact that her writing has a good flow the story never becomes too heavy. If you're looking for a wonderful love story with kindhearted main characters and a stunning background you should definitely give this book a try.

Book Review- A Walk in the Sun by Michelle Zink

Rose Darrow gets up every morning early to care for the animals on her family farm. Since her mother died her father has retreated into himself and rarely gets out of bed. The work has fallen to Rose. In fact it is overwhelming to her. Her aunt has hired someone for the summer to help Rose.
Bodhi has walked across the country from Montana to New York where the Darrow farm is. He plans to spend the summer working on the Darrow farm then he is going to Europe for a fresh start.
When he gets to Milford he is surprised how nice the people are and how concerned for Rose they are. Then the farm was nothing like his expectations. It is intimate and loved. Rose and her father have lost a lot. Rose has buried her pain and taken over the farm afraid to really live her life. Her father has sunk deeper into his depression.
Bodhi has his own secrets but does what he can to help Rose. He decides to help her live. She fights him every step of the way. Then his past makes an appearance and reality comes crashing in.
This book started pretty heavily with the result of the death of Rose’s mother. Sadness, depression and duty were in the forefront of the storyline. The reader feels for Rose. Her loss is present and the tone is set.
Bodhi comes in and presents a bit of hope to the reader and then to Rose as the story progresses. I loved how he treated her. His patience and understanding were definitely a ray of light in an otherwise sad story.
I like Rose and Bodhi together. The author created a sweet love story. It was a realistic story that could happen to any family in any small town. The emotions were believable as were the fearful reactions of moving on with life after such a great loss. Great story with strong emotions. I give it a 4 out of 5.
