This item works perfectly to test batteries. I have 7 batteries on my boat, all at various health stages. One particular battery was run down too far. I charged it, and it was able to reach 13+ volts (which is basically full charge), but it was not strong enough to start my generator. What gives? I used this load tester and tried to put a 450A load on the battery (which is 50% of the CCA rating on the battery, standard procedure), and I couldn't get to 450A. At just 100A, the battery meter went into the "replace" zone on the meter: the battery was irretrievably bad, despite the voltage reading. I tried desulfating with another device (multiple times) and then load testing again. Still failed. After that, I tested multiple new batteries, all passed the load test at loads up to 450A. This is a great tool because voltage doesn't tell the whole story about a battery.

NOTE: for the folks complaining that the tester can't go up to the full 500A load: this is because you have a bad battery, not a bad tester. If your battery can't handle that much load, you won't get there with this tester no matter how much you turn the knob. Test a new battery, you'll see what I'm talking about.

The carbon pile and gauges work very well, however the battery clamps are cheap junk. As an ASE Master Mechanic with 50 years experience, I have owned and used Solar Battery Chargers and test equipment and am familiar with the brand. The battery clips are very sloppy and really less than Junk. If they were good clamps this would have gotten 5 stars across the board. The clips are s flimsy they fail to make a good connection, so I guess I will just have to buy some Belden clips and change them to get a good piece of equipment

Current & Voltage Meter are Super Accurate

I was very curious how accurate the amp meter is so I connect to a very high end Klein clamp meter with 2000A capability. This tester's amp meter is EXACTLY to the point. I turn the dial so it draws from 50A to 400A repeatedly and you guessed it, my clamp meter shows exactly such. Very impressive.

I adjust the dial knob because I didn't like the way it was oriented. This is a very tricky process since the knob was hidden by 2 screws & the access position was strange. It takes some patience.

I highly recommend these over those 100A version because when a car starts draws way much much much more 100A.

I checked 2 batteries on the 3rd one no amp reading. Called customer service they said return to Amazon. Today I decided to open unit up to see why it's not working. I discovered the knobs on front is a bolt which tightens the carbon disks so you use multiple turns to load and unload the test.
No where in manual does it say this. I have 40 years experience in electronics and to me the knob looks like a potentiometer...
It's not.

This can test everything from motorcycle batteries up to diesel pickup batteries from what I can see. I've even tested a couple of aircraft batteries with it.

I'd say this is an invaluable tool if you handle a lot of batteries. With sealed batteries, there's really no better test than a load test and this will get it done.

We have been using the Christie CT3 testers for 30 years but they are wearing out. I wish someone would start making them again. I am down to my last one and can't find any parts. I ordered a Clore 1854 tester to try out and it was defective right out of the box. The load dial is defective and won't shut the load off. I am returning it. I have another one coming for the other store. We'll see how it works.
