It's hard to understand all these negative reviews going unanswered by the manufacturer. It does make me think they do not care and are not in this business for long. My first drive was bad. Amazon easily exchanged it (which a quality drive would not have had done) and I have been fortunate and no further problems. The entire external drive market is a difficult one. Who is actually making what drive under what name seems to be up for debate or recently changed. Just after I researched and found that Seagate had a very high failure rate in higher drive capacities, I purchased a number of WD Drives. They look nice and are priced right and have excellent ratings. Yet, about 30% of all the external WD drives I've bought have failed and I'm done depending on these type drives alone. I used WD drives to backup the backup drives and fund both failing at the same time and I was left with nothing. The best I can see as an answer is to find a drive that works for you. Use a different brand drive to back up your backup drive and, this is important, have a cloud service backup not only the computer but the external drives as well. I had bad experiences with Carbonite but just had an excellent experience with Back Blaze backup service. They will backup as many external drives as I have for my computer and if I need the data as I did when my WD drives all failed, they will for a price, send the entire drive data to you on a new drive. You can keep and pay for the drive or get the data off and return it for full credit. This is extraordinary service and just what I needed to compliment my array of backup drives. I trust no consumer drive today because of experience but honestly have to say this drive is fine after the initial change.

Needs sufficient power to work properly

Cliff Notes... Use a powered hub if you have issues.

I was testing USB 3 hubs awhile back in conjunction with this drive and a different 2TB drive. Here's some information that may explain some of the negative experiences.

Not all bus powered hubs are able to pass through enough power to external drives. And the ones that do work, some will only work on certain ports. Powered hubs do better but throughput still differ from hub to hub depending on the chipset and firmware.

The most consistent performance I've seen is to directly connect to the machine. However, some machine also don't provide enough power.

To summarize... If you have issues connected through a hub, try connecting directly to the machine and see if CrystalMark gives you a better result. What I ultimately recommend with this thing is a powered hub.

Toughest External hard drive I have ever seen! So i have owned several transcend and Silicon Power External military grade hard drives before. When this one came in i was amazed by the case. Most of it is this hard aluminum then the end is hard plastic and rubber to keep the dirt out. There is like this black rubber band thing around it too. If you are moving it, the USB 3.0 card is stored between that rubber band and the case. SO far so good, I have not lost any data since buying this new external hard drive!

the case might be strong but the drive inside is just a normal drive - mine failed nearly immediately after i started using it. now the drive will not initialize or format. i spent hours trying to fix it and spent $100 on recovery software to no avail. the drive is crap.

It's one of the few or maybe the only portable (power from usb) 4TB drive out there, specially with BIG USB 3.0 cable. 99% of USB 3.0 drives use the slim 2 section cable (on the drive's side) which becomes loose and useless after a few months. It is a struggle to find a hard drive with NORMAL cablee. Silicon Power is one of a few makers that produce such a hard drive. And this is the only one of 4TB.
I must say it is bigger than the usual drives, but this is not derived from the cable issue, but, probably, both because of the capacity and it's grade of protection, both of which are absolutely tradable for a little larger size.
In short, one of the best portable hard drives out there! Specially because of the cable!

Great, except for defective 3.0 USB cable

This has worked well for the 10 months I've had it. Only one complaint: the USB 3.0 doesn't work. It would connect/disconnect repeatedly and rapidly when plugged into the 3.0 port, but had no issues with the 2.0 USB. Transfer speed with 2.0 was only 41 MB/s, less than half of the 3.0, which really matters when you're dealing with 4TB. I tried lots of fixes (power management of USB port, etc.), but finally just tried a different 3.0 USB cable and this fixed it.

If it wasn't for the USB cord issue, I'd be giving this 5 stars. Well constructed, this drive spends a lot of time with the US Postal Service, as I use it primarily to send and receive large data sets from colleagues. It works great for this.

I have 3 of these 4tb drives now, I had a couple that came in opened or damaged packages but they were replaced with a return and new purchase asap. of the 3 one is only a few months old buty the other 2 are around a year old and they are both still working great.
Seems to be a decent product that I will continue to buy more of as I need when I need more room for more videos.

Seems to work fine. I am filling it up for things to send my brother in a nursing home to watch and read and play. This is the biggest drive (4tb) I have encountered that runs off of the pc usb and doesn't have to be plugged into the wall. I love that.
