Crucial’s new BX200 sounded like a good follow-up to the solid-as-a-rock BX100. But actual review testing reveals some serious shortcomings.

Tom’s Hardware Guide tested the BX200 and found reasonable read performance but impaired latency and sustained write performance that drops below even an old-style mechanical HDD. They point out the BX200 “goes down as one of the most disappointing SSDs introduced since 2008, when early JMicron DRAM-less controllers suffered the stutter fiasco.”

Anandtech tested the BX200 with similar results and highlights another problem with high power consumption in some idle modes (20x higher than the previous BX100 model) that would hamper use in laptop computer. Their summary: “to bring down drive prices, it's easy to understand why Crucial wanted to release a TLC drive in the BX series. But it's hard to understand why they're releasing it in what seems to be such a poor performing state.”

In summary the new BX200 seems like an odd duck - a new cheaper to produce TLC NAND drive with better read performance than traditional HDDs but overall performance well short of current mainstream SSDs such as Samsung’s 850 Evo or even Crucial’s own MX200. If the BX200 cost 30% less than mainstream SSDs that makes sense, but at nearly the same price it’s a questionable value.

Due to these issues I was able to switch my Amazon order from the BX200 and get one of the previous BX100 drives based on Micron’s excellent 16nm MLC NAND technology before they disappeared. Amazon has lots of excellent SSD options around the same price so compare before you buy the BX200.

It's not clear to me why you would choose this SSD over the MX200. The technology in the MX200 is superior, both the controller and the NAND used, and at the time of writing this review, the MX200 is only $11 more than this "bargain" SSD (at the 480GB/500GB capacity. I won't rehash TLC vs MLC vs SLC here because it's easily found in a quick Google search, but know that the difference is considerable.

If this is your first SSD, you probably won't notice but if you're someone (like me) who has been using SSDs for years, you will. I use my SSDs for a lot of media editing, moving large files, etc. this SSD is problematic. In my own simple test, I copied a 22GB MKV file from my 4TB HDD to this SSD. At first, the file copy appears to go relatively fast and then about 1/4 of the way into the copy, the average speed starts to drop towards 80MB/s and the time remaining starts to climb. It is actually faster to copy the same file over my network to my file server than to copy the file from my hard drive to the BX200 on the same machine. I also have a Toshiba 256GB Q Series Pro PC Internal Solid State Drive (HDTS325XZSTA) installed on the same machine and copying the same file sustains 160MB/s+ so over twice as fast with an older, smaller SSD.

So, believe the professional reviews and the other reviews here warning about write performance. In the simple test I tried, it looks to be true. There are better Crucial SSDs available for close to the same price so do yourself a favor and spend the extra $10-20, a small marginal cost for a much better SSD.

I bought it to use in my Atomos Ninja Assassin 4k monitor-recorder.
To record video in ProRes 422 HQ format 880 mbit/s it's about only 110 MB/s
But using this Crucial BX200 240GB SSD recording stops after 10-30s. I was shocked because spec is 540 / 490 MB/s and I need only 110 MB/s
So I tested this SSD in my PC (internal sata III connection, writing big file 10+ GB video from RAM-disk) and found that first 1-5 second disk writes Ok but then speed drops to 50-70 MB/s (see screenshot) ((( There is no mistake because other my Sandisk Ultra II and Samsung 850 EVO SSDs perform as they should
At the same time synthetic test programs (DiskMark64, ATTODiskBenchmark) show normal results (see screenshots)

Yes it works and price was good (only $54 by day deal) but anyway for me this SSD completely unusable and just waste money

I installed this SSD in a 2007 Toshiba Satellite A215-S4767(upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 10). Using Acronis (software license key included with the SSD) and a USB to SATA cable (Cinolink®USB 2.0 to 2.5 Sata Converter Adapter Cable for Ssd/hdd; Sata to USB 2.0 Converter for Ssd/hdd), I cloned the HDD onto the SSD. The cloning process took about an hour. Removing the HDD and installed the SSD took only a few minutes. My ancient Toshiba booted without problem.
The computer boots in less than thirty seconds, applications load nearly instantly, even web browsing and video streaming go more smoothly.

This drive installed beautifully into an ’09 MacBook using an OWC Data Doubler mounting kit, and the performance boost is everything hoped for. No glitches with build or operation, so I'm happy. The optical drive in this laptop died years ago, so tossing it to make room for a late life kicker was no loss, plus it simplified transfer of the system and program files. Currently, personal data files still reside on the hard drive so they have plenty of room, while the SSD handles files that are heavily read but infrequently modified.

Others have already belabored why you should go ahead and spend a little more for the MX200, and they have a great point if your gear can take advantage of the technology. But a BX200 is about all a Core 2 Duo MacBook with a SATA 2 interface can push. If you have a newer system with SATA 3, then do get an MX200 because it can actually use the better part.
