It came down to this Samsung or a similar spec'd SanDisk. After several hrs comparing the reviews, I decided on this due to reported head issues w/ the other. I've decided to write a detailed review of my experience to help anyone who's on the fence as I was.
TL;DR:
I like that it is tiny (as small as mouse/keyboard wireless USB adapters). I have had absolutely not issues w/ it heating up (it gets warm but nothing out of the ordinary). It is fast. I use it daily and haven't had it fail on me once. 4 of 5 stars b/c no cap and no real/usable lanyard hole. The hole that it has is roughly the size of a large sewing needle eye. The unit has held up to daily use for past 5 wks and shows no signs that back part is coming off.
More detailed explanation:
3-in-1: This device replaced 3 drives. I used 1 for file storage, another for an ad-hoc Linux OS when I needed to test/use old hardware, and another for a tiny linux distro w/ a few data/system recovery tools. B/c of its size, I was able to partition the drive into 2 64gb partitions (1 NTFS; 2 ext4).
I installed Lubuntu 16.04 32bit on the ext4 partition (w/ persistence) so that I could run it on pretty much on anything. I can use as an OS for secure session, or run recovery tools. The NFTS partition is used for files. I can access this partition from w/in my regular laptop (linux), any windows computer and, more importantly, from the USB's linux partition.
I use it everyday for file transfers and I've never had an issue w/ it locking up or not responding. It gets warm, as expected, but not hot. It's fast and performs as expected. I have not had the cap (back-end) detatch or start to wiggle and I've had it for 5 wks. Will be sure to update the review (and rating) if it breaks. It's worth noting that I remove it by gripping the sides, not from top/bottom. I've found it nearly impossible to remove any other way.
Finally, the lanyard and caps - the reasons why I deducted a star. This device does not come w/ a protective cap which is fine if you tote it around inside of a computer bag pocket or cable organizer, but I can't imagine the constant abuse it would get if it were hooked up to a keychain. Although not sure if it is intended for a keychain or any type of lanyard b/c the hole in this unit is SMALL! In fact, if you are looking for something you can carry on your keychain, look elsewhere, unless you want to use one of those tiny loops. Personally, I wouldn't trust data to something so fragile.
The drive looks very small and sleek. It seems like high quality plastics and what I assume is aluminum is used to make this drive. It seems sturdy enough to attach to my keys or throw in my bag. It is 19mm long and 15mm wide at tallest and longest points. It is impressively small and even more so considering the speeds I got in my loose testing.
Moving a 1.77GB file to it took an average of 36 seconds which means it would take under 40 minutes to fill the 119GB on average using USB 3 on my computer. Moving that same file from the drive to my computer took an average of 6 seconds which means it would take less than 6 minutes to transfer the full 119GB through USB 3 on my computer. The speeds were good, surprisingly so. Compared to my full sized sandisk USB 3 128GB flash drive it was much faster in write speed and a barely slower in read. It took my Sandisk drive a 1m38s to write that same 1.77GB file and 5 seconds to read it. It was a very non technical test but the results look great for the Samsung drive speeds.
I had considered buying the small form factor Sandisk 128GB USB 3 flash drive for a while but was slightly turned off by how many reviewers wrote of the excessive heat it gave off after extended use or just being plugged in for long periods of time. I have bought only Sandisk drives for years after previous mixed experience with other drives like Lexar and PNY. I like the Sandisk drives, they have been affordable and reliable in the time that I have used them and although I have no experience with the small Sandisk drives, the possible heat issues turned me away from that specific drive. After playing a video file for an hour off of this drive, I found it was a little warm but no excessive heat anywhere on the drive.
The size of this drive makes it perfect for plugging into compatible stereos, portability, and as extra storage for laptops that you can leave plugged in. I will be using this primarily for storage but appreciate the size for portability.
My only issues with this drive have little to do with the drive or its performance but the accessories and the lack thereof. This drive comes with nothing. There is no secure software on the drive itself and it does not come with a plastic cap to cover the port. More importantly, although it does have a small hole to attach a small lanyard or keyring, it does not come with either. What you see here is exactly what you get and that for the most part turns out to be great when you consider price, form factor, capacity, and performance.
Despite my minor gripes, the drive is great and I'm very satisfied with it so far. Time will tell if it is durable or reliable enough for the long haul but I will update my review should it not. For anything under $40 in late 2015, I think this is a great drive and have no problem recommending it.

It had always had weird transfer drops but I lazily just put that down to something network related and never checked it out, however, for the final two months of its life it kept being very temperamental and wasn't being seen by the shield or other computers and seemed to start getting quite hot when plugged in. Then it stopped working altogether.
I bought this so I could install a portable copy of windows 10 so I could do diagnostic tools on my laptops if... they were infected with viruses or the HDD was corrupted. Basically a backup drive.. Well here is the caveat, this requires you to FORMAT the flash drive, and when it formats the flash drive....
CrystalBenchMark speeds
130mb/s read, 45mb/s write, sequential data. NTFS file system.
Those who use flash drives know that, factory formatted file system is the best read write environment/scenario. Don't format the flash drive for ANY reason if you want to retain ideal transfer speeds.
However with the crappy speeds meant, it defeated the purpose of buying a USB 3.0 drive... So i went to try and fix the problems. I didn't back up the original manufacturer file system structure (bad idea). Google recommended using a SD card formatter program to reset the flash drive speeds. Paragon partition manager and EASEUS partition manager didn't manage to fix the transfer speeds (even if i reset it back to exFAT).
After formatting with SD card formatter program. I got 140mb/s read speed and 80-90mb/s write speed sequential data. It was a lot better than the previous 45mb/s. But I never got back my 110mb/s write speed when it was fresh out of the box.
Heat issues, you know how a lot of people said it was warm? Not hot? They all lied. Sort of. The reason why it's a lot "colder" than the sandisk mini flash drive is because the plastic cover (yes, the white cover) is a LOT MORE HEAT RESISTANT than the sandisk version. IF you only touch the white plastic cover, it feels warm only, because the plastic cover is REALLY GOOD blocking the HEAT. If you pull it out after transfering lots of data to the Samsung Fit drive, it will FEEL LIKE HOT POTATOES, as HOT as the sandisk version! (touch the metal USB part!)
So all of you that were concerned about the heat issues? Samsung suffers the same as Sandisk. It is AS HOT AS Sandisk. Except the plastic cover does an awesome job of not getting hot, so you don't "feel" the heat if you touch the plastic cover ONLY.
In regards with Sandisk disconnecting or going very slow when it's overheating... Samsung does not suffer from this, despite being as hot as sandisk, it slows down to about 30mb/s transfer speed with downclocking every now and then, but the transfer does not stop, and there are not issues. This was tested with transfering about 40gb worth of data. Repeatedly.
Conclusion:
I'm still highly concerned with the life span of this thing because of the heat, but it's not like there is an alternative version available. We will see how long this lasts. Will update this review if the USB drive dies from heat.
