item worked. im not sure its strong enough to fully compress the hinge springe. do the following: take a large C-clamp and lightly clamp the spring, slide the spring tool in place, then compress the spring with your large C-clamp. Finger tighten the nut on the spring tool as you go. When the spring is fully compressed, tighten the spring tool nut, remove the C-clamp. This takes less than 2 minutes.
Put the spring in place and loosen the spring tool nut with a wrench.
