Causes input spikes and mouse lag on my computer (Updated)

I purchased the "Anker Ultra Slim 4-Port USB 3.0 Data Hub with 10W Power Adapter / USB Wall Charger Included" version for use with a Macbook Pro 15 (late 2013 model). I generally like Anker products, but this hub apparently does not play nice with my computer. Just plugging it in causes other devices on the computer to start lagging. I spent several hours trying to debug why my bluetooth Logitech Anywhere 2 mouse had started lagging and spiking badly, swapping it with another mouse and trying the Unifying receiver instead of bluetooth, removing drivers, checking for other sources of input spikes. Just having this hub plugged in, with no other devices plugged into it, causes the input spiking to occur. I am a graphic designer and game player, and am pretty sensitive to variations in my mouse input. The problem goes away when I unplug the Anker hub. It does not reoccur when I plug in a different hub. It does not seem to matter if the Anker is powered or unpowered. The difference is subtle but appreciable to anyone who is sensitive to responsive mouse input. It may have also been the source of recent bluetooth streaming issues I have been having.

Speculation time! My guess is that there is something about the USB controller in this hub that does not play nice with my laptop's USB controller, creating a conflict. I tried working with this hub plugged-in and not plugged-in to see if I was imagining it, but I don't think so. Bluetooth is internally a USB device, so if the port I'm plugging the Anker hub into is shared with the bluetooth controller, I could see how that might have been affecting my audio and bluetooth mouse input by causing data transmission problems, but this is pure speculation on my part.

A workaround might be to just plug the Anker into the other USB port so it doesn't conflict with other devices sharing that datapath (this is a strategy employed by DJs with a lot of USB music gear), but I think I will just return it.

UPDATE:

Anker customer service contacted me and helped me troubleshoot the issue. It turns out that it's not a specific problem with this hub, but with ALL USB 3.0 ports! I looked up the issue by googling "USB3 interference"; USB 3.0 data rates can generate radio frequency noise that kill bluetooth performance. It does not happen at USB 2.0 data rates; this is a problem with the USB 3.0 hardware implementation, and apparently was a big deal back in 2014, and a big surprise to the tech community.

Anker suggested that moving the hub to another port farther away from the bluetooth devices as a workaround, or to use a different port, and this did seem to alleviate the problem. However, the takeaway is that you can not use USB 3.0 devices with your laptop and expect reliable Bluetooth connectivity. It may also cause problems connecting to WiFi operating in the 2.4GHz band; I'm using 5GHz at home and have not noticed this myself. You can use USB 2.0 devices with no problem in a USB 3.0 laptop port, because this does not trigger the interference-causing data rate. The severity of interference seems to depend on the USB 3.0 implementation of the computer manufacturer.

In short, if you don't need Bluetooth or 2.4GHz radio connectivity, you can probably get away with using USB 3.0. I noticed that many other sellers of USB 3.0 hubs note that there are issues with wireless interference; the description of this particular hub does not mention that at the time of my review. The hub itself is still pretty nice, and Anker offered to refund the cost because of the inconvenience to me. The customer service experience has been very good, and I am appreciative of their technical followup.

I needed another small USB hub for connecting flash drives to my comuter, but also it had to be capable of being able to be used as a charger separate from my computer. Again, my first stop was looking at Anker. They had what I was looking for. This 4 port USB can plug straight into my computer if needed, or it can run off a wall plug-in to charge things. I've found some things charge slower from a computer USB port than they do if plugged into a USB Hub plugged into a wall.

I'll tell you that from personal experience, that they have great customer service, no matter the issue you will get all the help you need. Friendly, courteous & very appreciative of every customer. That in itself will keep me a lcustomer with Anker. Customer service like they have is hard to find. They belive in their products & stand behind them readily.

Low Power

Note: After being contacted (twice) by Anker, I have agreed to raise this from 3- to 4-stars. I purchased this wanting to charge multiple devices at my desk at work. While the title says 12W, it does note 5V and 2.4A in the descriptive bullet points. I did not look too closely at all those terms and instead focused on the fact that it had four ports and a power plug. What Anker wants you to know about this device is that it's a USB 3.0 device with high speed data throughput. I cannot assess those capabilities as I only use it to charge multiple devices at once. I am a big fan of Anker products and own a number of products and am guessing that it meets if not exceeds the standards they advertise.

My original review: I purchased this, not for the ability to connect multiple devices to my computer, but to charge multiple devices at once at work. Instead of plugging it into the MacBook Pro (and having to unplug it every time I left my desk) or the Dell monitor (and having it stop providing power every time the monitor goes into power save), I plugged the device into my PlayStation 4 and then also plugged the hub into a wall socket. The idea was that I could keep my PlayStation controller, Bluetooth headphones, Kindle and phone plugged in while I worked. It does it OK, but the Kindle always gives me the warning that it's a low-power charger and that if I try to use the Kindle while it's plugged in, it may use as much power as it's getting from the hub (and thus not charge). So it mostly keeps the devices topped off, but not as quickly as I'd hoped.

Pretty good design, a little finicky about working (Updated Feb. 2017)

Pros:
* Small
* Runs with or without power (presumably—I have mostly read this, haven't tested it very much without power myself)
* Kind of nice that it takes micro-USB for power, and its power supply can be used as a USB charger

Cons:
* Occasionally doesn't work on my MBP. Most recently I went nuts trying to figure out why it couldn't see the hub. I rebooted to no avail. Turns out I needed to "reboot" the hub by pulling power and USB and reconnecting both.

I actually bought this to replace my Amazon Basics USB 3 hub, which seemed to be having these same sorts of weird problems. Unfortunately, this hub seems to have its own set of weird problems.

UPDATE February 2017: I think some of my troubles from my original review may have been due to a defective hub. The USB 3 part of that hub stopped working this past January 2017. I requested a replacement from Anker who were extremely pleasant to deal with. They shipped me a new hub free under warranty (and I didn't have to ship the old, broken one back). The new hub seems to be recognized consistently by my MBP so far. It's a toss-up who is responsible for any lingering USB 3 problems I have, MBP/OS X or the hub itself.

Big huge thumbs up for Anker customer support. Their support caused me to upgrade this review from 4 to 5 stars.
