I love this new series produced by Ridley Scott and the attention that is focused on how the art of nursing began. What I also appreciate about this new series is how the African-American character is not portrayed in a sterotypical light as a Mandingo or someone incapable of being a learned individual during this time in history. It almost mirrors the movie "Something the Lord Made" starring Mos Def and Alan Rickman and I am extremely excited to see where this show will take each of it's characters.

Stumbled upon this last week as I cut ties with my cable company, installed an HD antenna and tuned into episode 4 on PBS. We went back on Amazon Prime and semi-binge watched episodes 1-3 and this is now part of our TV entertainment repertoire. Excellent Civil War stories lines, costumes, sets, etc., and can't get enough of the show. It won't be for everyone, however it's a fantastic option to what's on the major networks. I enjoy this just as much as other shows that I'm hooked on: Orphan Black (BBCA), Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, House of Cards (Netflix), and Outlander (Starz).

Mercy Street's aim is to show the viewer what it was like in a military hospital, this a Union hospital, in occupied Alexandria, VA. Two of the three running themes are the Confederacy's citizens in war and the hospital itself. Mercy Street, according to dialog in the fifth (of six) episodes stems from the road leading from the docks to the hospital. This hospital, although governed by the Union, also has Confederate soldiers. Depending on the doctor or nurse, either Union soldiers are given preferential treatment or soldiers from both sides given equal treatment. The third running theme is repatriation of torn apart former slave families.

This is riveting television and makes for fantastic viewing. Had I still been involved in teaching U.S. history to high school students, I would easily add this to my section of the Civil War. Not only does this humanize the war and suffering but it thoughtfully teaches along the way. Both my wife and I would watch an episode each day with our morning coffee before we began getting ready for work. (We actually got up a bit earlier so that we would have time to do so.) Hopefully Season 2 will be as good as Season 1.

Mercy Street's creators and actors have gone to great lengths to develop an historically accurate portrayal of the social, political, and fiscal realities surrounding America's Civil War. The sets and costumes are amazing, and the harsh and gruesome realities are laid bare. The acting is a amazing and the story lines compelling. Cherry Jones as Dorothea Dix is the proper mix of self-righteous indignation at the rapid changes in society, and actual compassion for the suffering. Donna Murphy (we have missed her since "Resurrection" was cancelled!) is impeccable as the haughty, steely, and implacable matriarch of the Green family, whose members are caught on the horns of the dilemma of choosing between their Southern pride and loyalties, or bending to the reality of their impossible situation of playing "hosts" to the United States Army. The plight of African-Americans - freed, slave, former slave, and "contraband" (slaves taken as property by the US forces as part of the spoils of war and forced into deplorable conditions) - are poignant and unblinking in their honesty. Mercy Street would be nearly perfect, if not for the contrived relationship between Dr Jed Foster (Josh Radnor) and Nurse Phinney (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Dr Foster's wife and children's departure is too convenient by half, and it stretches the bounds of credulity that she would cover for his debilitating secret. Still, if you enjoy period pieces and addictive plots and subplots (ala "Downton Abby" or "North and South"), treat yourself to Mercy Street.

Interesting, creative drama, based on Civil War events and the effects on the people North and South. Outstanding series that I binge watched and was still riveted to viewing the next episode. Not a fan of hospital soap operas or TV dramas, but this excellent, well written drama and intrigue leaves you wanting to see more.

I'm mystified by the high ratings provided by other viewers. The acting in this series is beyond bad. I think another reviewer put it best. It's actually painful to watch. Two thumbs down - don't waste your time.

I knew from the first scene this was not for me. The acting, right off the bat was staged and wooden. I kept going but the acting continued to be terrible, the writing mediocre, and little plot line. When Scarlett O'hara descended the stairs to meet her family in the dining room for breakfast (nary an egg to eat because the dastardly union soldiers had eaten them all), I saved myself further agony and stopped right there. Ridley Scott? that pulled me in. "BBC" pulled me in. But Poldark, Call the Midwife, Selfridge, Downton--- this show is not..

It's an engaging look at the struggle between southern and northern interests in a town filled to brim with both peoples, all set against the backdrop of a military hospital. Some episodes are more focused on the political interplay and the war, while other focus on interpersonal struggles. The characters start out a little one-dimensional, but as the episodes pass the grow beyond their stereotypes. Of course, there are the ones you want to root for and the ones you love to hate and everything in between. I'm looking forward to another season.
