One of the standout features of the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra is its impressive 12TB storage capacity. This ample space has allowed me to securely store all of my important files, media, and backups in one central location, providing both peace of mind and easy access to my data whenever I need it.
The performance of the My Cloud EX2 Ultra is also top-notch, with its high-speed processor and ample memory ensuring smooth, efficient operation. File transfers are quick and seamless, and I've experienced no lag or slowdowns when accessing my data, even when multiple users are connected to the device.
Setting up the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra was a breeze, thanks to its user-friendly interface and step-by-step instructions. The device easily integrated into my existing network, and the intuitive dashboard made it simple to configure settings, manage users, and monitor the health of my NAS.
Another feature I appreciate is the device's remote access capabilities. With the My Cloud mobile app, I can access my files from anywhere, using my smartphone or tablet. This has proven incredibly convenient for both work and personal use, allowing me to stay connected to my data even when I'm on the go.
RADI 1 capability

and mobile capability
The EX2 met all the requirements. My initial impression is that this is a nice NAS but I am surprised by how often the fan comes on and how loud the fan is. Generally the fan only has kicked on for short period, but when I was doing a full backup of my iPhone photos (13,500 photos), the EX2 fan kicked on at full speed. When at full speed the fan is very noticeable and I can hear it in another room. I surely couldn't work and be on calls in my office with the fan on and this loud. When I just did general backups, like backing up of my MAC's, the fan came on but was not that loud. Not sure why just copying photos made it kick in so loud, makes me wonder what streaming would do. I'll have to review my NAS setting to see if something can be adjusted to reduce how often the fan runs. Despite the fan issue, I like the NAS but disappointed in the fan running during heavy load.
Initial setup hung on the MY Cloud account creation, with an "Updating" screen staying on multiple minutes before returning to the starting point. After multiple attempts, I just bypassed My Cloud creation to get to the main dashboard, update the firmware and then it installed. Better part of an hour wasted and I have lots of company judging from the forums.
Documentation in the box is nonexistent, and the manual that comes up when you search it is for an older OS version.
The new OS has basically no free backup software and omits the "backup" option on the dashboard dropdowns. Free TRIAL software can be installed from the apps. I ended up trying to use the Memeo Backup software on my desktop (free with my existing Synology NAS). It's now day 2 and the NAS shows nothing in there, although Memeo shows 69 GB done with 102 GB to go. How slow is that, if indeed anything has been backed up?
Related to lack of documentation, if you want to use a UPS, simply connect the two devices with a USB cord and hopefully clicking on the UPS symbol on the dashboard will show something like "APC battery charge 100%." But nothing in the documentation I can find about this and there are no configuration options like how long to run on the UPS before shutting down. The "Network UPS" switch under Settings/Network has nothing to do with this and is documented in a single sentence of the OS5 online manual.
Users: From my Windows desktop I can only see nonpublic shares in Windows Explorer if I use the admin credentials, even though I have clearly checked a user I created to have rights to that share. The userid and password are rejected. While this may or may not be a Windows issue, there is no documented tutorial to work around this that I could find. I had to use the admin credentials in Memeo to set up the backup to that private share.
The power light went solid pretty quickly when I initially powered up, but later in the day started blinking off briefly every five seconds. There seem to be about five reasons for this to happen, but nothing in the log shows a corresponding error code. Best guess from reading the forums is that it is "indexing" (what is it indexing if there are no files stored there?) and apparently that can take forever. I'm retired and could die before this completes.. Just ordered the DS224+ and put in for the return.
