Good basic NAS storage, priced right
I bought this to replace an aging (and soon to be unsupported) 5 year old My Cloud. My old My Cloud was very reliable, but this time I wanted better safety with a redundant back up (raid) NAS.I don't do a lot of streaming, (music & occasional videos) my primary usage is reliable back up for my wife's and my laptops, android phones and tablets (photos, documents, music etc.). Setup was fairly simple though anyone who has not previously set up a network storage device should be a little patient (there is a learning curve). It was simple to map in Windows, and the android My Cloud app was easy to set up on our android phones and tablets. The EX2 Ultra is fairly compact and quiet enough that it sits right on my desk. Drive removal/replacement is simple. I bought the 8TB version which comes with 2 standard 4TB WD Red drives (Mfg date this year). This is the same drive that was inside my previous My Cloud, that after 5+ years still performs reliably, so I expect to have good service. Backup on all our devices has been reasonably quick & smooth. *While this is not the best choice for those wanting a super-robust NAS due to the modest processor and built in ram, for those wanting secure, relable back up at a reasonable price, the EX2 Ultra may be a good choice. NOTE: I have seen a couple of reviews mention that Western Digital Support for the EX2 Ultra is expiring shortly. That is incorrect. The EX2 Ultra comes with OS3 which is due to expire shortly, however upon initial set-up, the EX2 updates to WD's current OS5. It is the older version EX2 that is not upgradable from OS3 to OS5 which will become unsupported.
