Very fresh and interesting angle. Probably because of where she comes from. She said herself....just middleaged white man....my god. She is most certanly not MWM :-) I especially liked the journey from god to no god, as I also come from christian background.

Even though a very short read, this epiphany is welcome result of a true inner search. It is a genuinely bold & major declaration for a Black female author. Too bad many other people, of all persuasions, do not attempt to make a similar self-assessment. Asking the tough questions, going outside of your comfort zone, and cracking the door to to a house of age-old hypocrisy, miseducation and false teachings are very courageous and scary undertakings. Fortunately, once you get past those initial hurdles other realities reveal themselves. I am very happy for Cheryl and wish that others would find merit in her work and revelations. This book is a worthy read for all of the brave "self-analyzers." Have no fear believers, the book is not as scary as it's title.

Here's the thing with Firing God: No pilgrimage to India or California or Australia. No chanting. No incense. No meditation cushion. No gitas, vedas, or shastras. Not a whisper of sanskrit anywhere. No lineage. No swamis or babas or sris. Just Cheryl. Plain Cheryl. Not Cheryl-ji.

Louisiana, the bible belt. Om? Forget it. Hallelujah, more like it. And yet she has an understanding. She points in the same direction. Hers an American expression. Like jazz. Unique. Note of barbecue, hint of gumbo.

She lays it out in fifteen pages, 44 - 61. There's more, her story, which she seems happy enough to tell. But those fifteen pages. For me, the right combination. The sound I heard was the tumblers falling into place. The click of an opening lock.
