All of the screws are visible from the bottom except for the under the two rubber feet on the hinges.

Just received mine today, so first impressions:

Build and finish are fine for the price.

1080p full HD screen. If this is not the reason you are buying it, there may be better options. The screen is GLOSSY and has lots of reflection and glare. Plenty sharp, pretty good viewing angles, but brightness is a little low IMO.

This is no where near ultrabook size/weight, but it is a fairly light laptop that will travel well.

Connectivity! LAN port with lights! VGA! Full size HDMI! USB 3.0 (1), Full size SD reader. Again, if you don't care about the LAN and full size HDMI/VGA, there may be better options.

Keyboard and Trackpad are more than acceptable, maybe even above average IMO. Caps Lock light, Mute light, full size shift keys, dedicated page up/down, Function keys by default (rather than F keys).

There is a fan, and it has been going most of the time I've been using it - not loud or high pitched though. No noticeable heat yet.

Replaceable battery! Its small too, so backups on a trip would be easy to bring. Not sure about battery life yet, but I've been using it unplugged for almost an hour and am at 88%.

Speed? Not so much. Will need more time, but I'm certain this is akin to all things "netbook 2.0", though 4gb of RAM is better than some. General web browsing has been fine, but weather.com has become a good test for lesser processors, and it certainly brings this one to a crawl.

Storage has about 13GB available after the first round of updates out of the box.

For me, this is a great buy to use for Remote Desktop. The full HD screen combined with the LAN, VGA, HDMI ports makes this a cheap travel/business computer if you use it for mostly RDP. The replaceable battery is another bonus after years of using ultrabooks. But if you are buying this as your main machine, you may be disappointed in performance.

Update February 17, 2017

I just added a SSD inside this laptop computer and installed Windows 10 on it instead of the slow undersized EMMC disk that comes with this computer. HP left the space for a CD drive open, so there is plenty of space to add as large a capacity SSD as you wish. I bought this adapter case, removed the circuit board with the two SSD connectors on it and discarded the mechanical pieces in the recycle bin (trash). Then I used some Velcro tape to secure the new SSD to the inside of the case where the non-existent disk drive area was reserved. Some parts you will need: The roll on sticky tape is to apply to the two rubber standoffs that are on either side of the battery on the backside. You have to remove these two rubber feet to gain access to the two pairs of screws underneath. When you need to reapply these rubber feet later, you'll need some good roll-on glue to make them stick better. And these rolls of double sided tape are very useful for applying address labels and other such projects, so it isn't an entire waste. It lays down a solid strip of adhesive compared to another product that only lays down dots of adhesive.

As a result, the disk speed increased from 6.75 to 8.1 - a rather significant improvement, but most of all, plenty of space for lots of apps and data storage. All the other parameters stayed the same, of course. Then I formatted the 29 GB disk to be just a storage area since the Operating System is now on the 240 GB SSD I added. It is quite difficult to open up the case to access the inside of the laptop computer. But my wife did it in about 15 minutes. I made a mistake of not cloning the new drive first like I usually do. I thought I could back up the recovery disk onto a USB drive. And I did, but it was not successful. It could have been successful in hindsight if I had the benefit of my current experience. I had to purchase a CD caddy to get a circuit board adapter, but it was less than $10. I took photos of the inside of the laptop computer that I will attach eventually. If you choose to do this, you really need to have some experience upgrading computers. It is not a simple task. I will put a video link in a comment.

This is an amazing deal for an entry level $200 laptop computer. I realize some people may be concerned with the small 32 GB eMMC SSD, and you will be correct in the long term. The disk will eventually fill up. The operating system takes up about 16.1 GB of the SSD's 32 GB storage space, which is about half. However, if you are willing to give up the hibernate mode, you can save about 1.4 GB just by disabling the hibernate file. It just takes a few minutes and it is very simple. You can search on Google to learn how to do it. You can store a huge amount of photos with 1.4 GB – and it’s free. Also, if you are still a fan of the Windows 7 look and feel, purchase Start 10 for $5 and you’ll be so glad you did. It is the very first thing I do with a new computer.

First and foremost, here are the Windows Experience Index scores. And yes, there really is a Windows Experience Index included in Windows 10. But it isn’t straightforward how to do it. These are real and indisputable performance numbers. There is no artificial limit of 7.9 in Windows 10.

CPU Score – 6.7 (Currently 8.1 with new 240 GB SSD Drive)

SSD Score – 6.75
Video Encoding Score – 6.6
Video Graphics Score – 4.8

Bottom Line: Astonishingly Good Performance for $200

And if you are tempted to increase the RAM in this computer just because you can, I suggest that you don’t. There is a page file that has to be created in your precious SSD that is equal to the size of your RAM. So if do add 4 GB of RAM, there goes another 4 GB of your SSD space. Want to see where all your space goes? Download Spacesniffer (free) and watch it portrayed visually. And by the way, 4 GB of RAM is plenty. You’ll probably use less than half of that RAM in normal operation. Right now I’m watching a streaming HD video on Netflix and the CPU usage is only 22% and the RAM usage is 65% of the 4 GB of RAM. At idle, the CPU usage is 2% and the RAM usage is 43%. So save money and your precious hard disk space and don’t buy any additional RAM.

The eMMC style solid state disk (SSD) is considerably faster than a mechanical hard drive and somewhat slower than a more conventional SSD. You probably already have a spare SDHC memory card that you can use as additional memory to make up for the relatively small 32 GB eMMC SSD memory. I plan to use a high speed SD card as a location to store all my photos and videos. That's what takes up most of my storage space. My documents and other things are much smaller files. This is the fastest SD card I could find. I don't know if I will purchase the 64 GB or 128 GB SD card yet. For now I am using a 32 GB SD card that seems to be very fast.

According to my tape ruler, this display is a full 14 inches of diagonal viewable area – which is the standard method of measurement. Battery life is surprisingly good. I haven't done a timed test yet, but it is as good as my far more expensive 17 inch HP laptop computer. Of course the battery is bigger for the 17 inch laptop computer. I chose a solid black background just in case it contributes to power consumption. Most likely the backlight is always on, so it may not matter. It depends upon how the engineers designed the computer.

The speed isn't going to set any world records, but it is plenty fast as long as you are not planning to use it as a high performance gaming computer. I watched a Netflix movie and there was not even the slightest issue that I could see. I have 50 Mb/second internet service, so download speed was not a factor. That’s a completely separate matter. This computer booted from a cold power on start to being on the internet in 35 seconds displaying a fully loaded web page. There are not many SSD based desktop computers that can do that. I did delete some useless start up files. I am a career electrical engineer and I’ve been building computers since 1982, so I know how to improve and maintain performance. Actually, there weren’t many junk applications on the computer when I got it, which was pleasantly surprising. I got rid of the MacAfee software and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to be my antivirus software and it’s free.

The keyboard key spacing is very slightly less than my wireless HP keyboard. I type without looking at my keyboard, so even that slight amount was noticeable to me. The keyboard layout takes some adjustment to find where the seldom used keys are located. The keys require more effort to press than my wireless HP keyboard, but not much more. I read someone’s comment they could see under the keys, but is certainly not the case with mine. It appears well designed and robust.

So I give this low cost entry level laptop computer a full 5 stars based on performance and price. This would make a good college laptop computer that’s small and relatively lightweight. The touch pad works fine if you are used to it. I always use a mouse, but I will use the touch pad if needed. It has the fastest wireless internet speed 802.11ac and even Bluetooth. So you can even purchase a Bluetooth mouse and not use up a USB port. I’ve had superb results with all my HP products. It is a great company and I endorse their products.
