This book saved my life
Back Mechanic quite literally saved my life. I suffered from an L5/S1 herniated disc (see attached photo). I was in immeasurable pain, literally 24 h a day. I could not walk, I could not stand, I could not sleep. I spent most of my days laying face down on my floor with a pillow under my hips, trying to wait for the pain to subside. Sitting was manageable at times, but only made things worse. I tried PT, which helped marginally, but was proving to be quite useless. After 14 LONG weeks of suffering, nerve damage, and indescribable frustration, I discovered Back Mechanic. After 2 weeks of DILIGENTLY following Dr. McGill's plan (as outlined with in the book), I could walk and stand for 3-5 minutes (as opposed to radiating pain after ~30 seconds upon getting up). After 3 weeks, I was ~90% pain free and could stand for roughly 30 minutes without discomfort. By week 4 I was completely pain free, and I am happy to report that I am now 5 weeks completely pain free. I do the McGill Big 3 EVERY DAY. I have even begun to start weight training again - albeit with much caution. If you are a back-pained individual, this is the best use of your money, hands down. I cannot promote the information contained within this book enough.

I've suffered from lower back pain for 3 years from a bulging disc and the toughest part was trying to figure out what I did to aggravate the pain or what I did to relieve the pain as I had some pain free days and some pain free activities but not always the same ones or the same times. After several back doctors and therapeutic and PT sessions, I was still in chronic pain, not terribly bad pain but the pain was my constant companion. Reading this book has helped so much - one, to get me out of pain and I'm able to string together many pain free days now into pain free weeks...and most importantly, it's given me control of my back health as I know exactly what my cause is and what to do to practice good spine health and keep my back happy, it's like I've been given an owners manual for my back and how to best take care of it. Dr McGill's advice is so simple, practical and easy to understand, I highly recommend this book! Thank you Dr McGill!

Helps alot

I first stumbled on information about the Stuart McGill techniques in early 2024. I was sitting in a chair, twisted slightly to rise, and knew immediately that I had wrenched my back. It was so panful that my spouse had to get on their hands and knees to help me move my feet.

While laying in bed, I made ample use of my laptop to look for a recommended local chiropractor or physical therapist as well as self-help books and youtube videos. Many of the videos were short clips of one or more of the Stuart McGill "Big 3" methods. When I could finally roll out of bed on my own, I tried following along with the videos and was happy with the results.

So next, I borrowed the "Back Mechanic" book via interlibrary loan. New or used, it's an expensive book, and I wanted to be sure it would be a good investment before buying it for myself, which I finally did buy here on Amazon for $37 including shipping.

It's a very well-written and well-illustrated book. Within and across chapters, the "mechanic" ideas are previewed, explained, and reviewed, which indicates that the author and his editor (his son) understood the teaching psychology that was needed for a book like this.

The book, a paperback version, arrived quickly from the seller and was in the "very good" used condition as advertised.

I'll preface by saying I'm not a physical therapist, I have not been diagnosed with disc problems, and I don't have significantly impairing back pain presently.

I bought this book first for a friend who had a herniated disc. We're both in our 30's, he told me about his problem and how impaired he'd become. I couldn't get him to a physical therapist but I could send him a copy of this book. He still has some back pain, but he worked to reduce it to a level he could tolerate using the material herein. Now when we talk he doesn't mention his back much, if at all. He installs windows, so his job is very physically demanding.

I also purchased a copy to give to a guy I worked for very briefly. He had numerous significant medical issues, not the least of which were spinal problems that limited his time standing and moving about to less than two hours. His heart also wasn't well, and that limits capacity for training one's self. He seemingly felt himself beyond my advice and that of this book, and didn't want to read it. I do not know if he was correct in his determination.

I've also read a good bit of this book in attempt to address my postural pains that come and go. I wanted to power through and finish it, but.. my apologies, I really dislike the writing style and organization. Admittedly, I'm not literate enough to expand accurately on that.

I'm a 10 year automotive mechanic and the son of a 40+ year HVAC contractor. My passion for automotive is centered on troubleshooting. I think about things in the format of mechanical operation, and I find it necessary to understand function of individual components of a system before tackling systems as wholes. Dr.McGill seems to have the same bend. He admittedly struggled getting his knowledge translated into writing, but found the information so valuable that it had to be done anyways. I have to agree with him.

Much of the message herein is identifying problems, isolating them, and developing means to work around them. The ideology is spine preservation through minimizing non-essential movement and capitalizing on the benefits of rigidity/stiffness. He wants to turn crippled people into strong pillars. It is a unique and effective strategy if you can accept the premise:

You will not move like you used to. You will have limitations and your minimal pain/pain-free status will be dependent on diligent maintenance.

If you can accept that, you're likely to find a way to reduce your pain in this book.

TL/DR: This book helps you identify your problem, and teaches you how to get out of or prevent pain by becoming stiff, and how to move about as a stiff person. It is a necessary alternative for those who find themselves unable to address their back problems by other means, and it is in some cases an alternative to surgery (fusing discs), which simply forces stiffness. But supplementing surgery requires discipline, accuracy of diagnosis, and an understanding of the fault.

What's missing is an explanation of why flexibility works for some, and why an uninjured person should pursue stiffness v. flexibility.

What's wrong is the use of the phrase "...get your swagger back."

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential resource for those with back problems
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 13, 2024
If you are experiencing back pain or it continues to reoccur this book is essential reading. I came across Dr McGill on a podcast and it was (no exaggeration) life changing. Back Mechanic does what it says - it gives you the tools to help yourself and I can now see that certain “good” habits and exercises were actually making me worse. I suspected this, but it is comforting to have a specialist set out why certain exercices are better than others for those with back problems. The book is succinct but comprehensive with clear diagrams and explanations.

It also gives more than practical advice, it is filled with positivity and gives hope to those of us who think we will never be better than just ok. I would highly recommend - it is an incredible resource for the money.

This book saved me from surgery and transformed my spine health and posture. From not being able to sit even for 5 minutes, I became completely pain free in a matter of weeks by following this book. And that too when all the doctors had recommended surgery as the only option. Extremely detailed explanations of what causes pain, how to do specific exercises and how to move/walk/sit in a healthy way

I have suffered from back pain for 12 years. During that time I was constantly researching and consulting various professionals, starting with my family doctor. I was treated by 2 different chiropractors several physiotherapists, orthopedic specialist and even underwent spinal surgery which stopped the pain for about 21/2 years. Through my own research I found that in some cases prescribed treatment was making the problem worse. The medical doctors in all cases referred me to physiotherapists who seemed to have one size fits all approach and never helped in any way. I finally came discovered Dr. Stuart McGill and was immediately attracted by his scientific approach to spinal problems. I obtained a copy The Back Mechanic and was amazed at the incredible amount of information and instruction along with illustrations. I think Dr. McGill has done a masterful job of explaining very complex body mechanics in simple and understandable language from, self assessment of the cause of your pain to instructions on self treatment of your particular pain. This is not a book that you read and put on the shelf, It is a book that you will keep handy and reference frequently.
