As someone who doesn't normally read romance, I rather enjoyed this. The writing is superb, and never gets too clunky or overly preachy. It tells the story; from the romantic-filled scenes between Tessa, Aaron, and Bryson, and even the tension-filled moments of being put in the cross-hairs of powers that want to use or exploit Tessa and her newfound powers, which involves various Native American myths and legends, and a unique heritage.

The author's choice of first-person perspective was the right choice. Kathryn does a wonderful job putting you right into Tessa's head from the very first page all the way to the very last page. When I first started reading, I was concerned about the main character's first impression, feeling completely overwhelmed, but as the story progressed the character grew, becoming someone who just didn't pout and feel sorry for herself (I'm looking at you Twilight). Instead, she overcomes while grappling with the lost of her uncle.

However, it is the band of colorful characters that really brings this story to life. Mae and Dottie are brimming full of wit and sarcasm. The love triangle between Tessa, Aaron, and Bryson becomes even more nerve-racking when you don't know who to root for. But the author gives us a clear winner rather than teasing us by leaving it unresolved, which is really annoying. But beyond the romance is a woman who truly finds out what she's made of.
