The first time that I saw this film, I felt as if it was a bit overwhelming. I left the theater puzzled as to why it got such rave reviews. My initial thoughts were that it was too long, boring, and very depressing. With that said, I decided to give it another chance, and I'm extremely glad I did. As for those wondering why I would want to subject myself to a film that I initially didn't like for a second time; it's because I like to keep an open mind. In the case of this film, I really wanted to get a better understanding of what it was all about. Having seen it again, I was better able to grasp the complexity of the characters. If you absolutely hated it, I can understand your feelings. You might, however, want to give it another chance, as in the end my verdict is that it's a masterpiece. It's not a funny film, but it's down to earth and real.

I agree with the reviewer who stated that "the negative reviews reflect the mood of the viewer more than the movie." When I initially saw it, I was admittedly not in a very receptive mood. At the time, I probably wouldn't have been able to fully appreciate any movie, as my mind was elsewhere. Based on this, I knew that I needed and wanted to see it gain. Upon watching 'Manchester By The Sea' for a second time, and feeling a lot more receptive, my impressions were completely different. Simply put, I got it wrong the first time around, very wrong. On a similar vein, I've read books that I've hated the first time around, only to read them again at a later date and fully enjoy them. Such was the case with his film.

This is a film that deals with the raw emotions of everyday life and death. Although it's mostly about death and grief, the underlying message is more about life, and how it moves on.

I’m a movie lover but I usually try to avoid heart-wrenching stories, unless they had been previously acclaimed by many serious sources. Even then I’m very picky. I do not write reviews, though, there are experts for that that I rather read. So why I’m writing a review for Manchester by the Sea? Because it was a tragic story that I didn't plan on watching and now is one of my all-time favorites.

The thing is, I traveled to the US to visit my daughter and she made me go with her to see this movie, said it had 96 rating in metacritic, high ranked in imdb, whatever. So I went, secretly prepared to count down the minutes until it ended, and very thankful that we were at the alamo theater where I could order food and drinks in case I couldn't stand it. But then the unexpected happened. The story sucked me in, so fully, that at the end I wanted the film to continue, to watch the main characters interact a little bit longer. Maybe I wasn't the only one, most people in the theater (fully packed) also remained, watching the credits, as if not ready to leave just as yet. Well, since the movie made such a strong impression, and since we knew already the spoilers, we went back three days later to check if it was as good as the first time. It was.

First of all, I think this film has the best acting among the nominated pictures I’ve seen so far, and I’ve seen most of them except Lion and Moonlight (tragic stories that maybe I’ll watch later on), the four SAG nominations well deserved. Casey Affleck's wide range of emotions in just one film, from feeling numb, to feeling raw, to slowly opening his heart, peeling the layers one by one, well, it was the best acting I’ve seen in years. Great acting also from Lucas Hedges, Michelle Williams, the whole cast really.

An easy film to appreciate, not so easy to enjoy. Casey Affeck turns in a powerful performance as a small town boy from Maine who has left that area for anonymity in Boston, living in isolation, while working as the handyman for a series of apartment buildings, unable and unwilling to relate to his boss, the residents or anyone else. His only time among people is spent in bars, drinking alone and picking the odd fight.for no apparent reason. Then his brother dies and his death drags him back to a home and a life he's clearly fled and forcing him most unwillingly to take responsibility for his high school age orphaned nephew, who is now dealing with his own grief primarily by denying it as well. .

So, the film deals with loss, death and grief, real with sharp teeth and unrelenting. And of course, you will find out eventually why Casey Affleck is the way he is. The skies are as somber and gray as the mood as the weather never really seems to break. Every scene is physically cold, with remnants of ice and snow, but not enough of either to provide any physical winter beauty..The performances are top notch. The film absolutely refuses to compromise. No traditional Hollywood false sentimentality here, including in its ultimate resolution. As you can see from the other reviews so far, people love it or hate it. I tend to love it, but it's a grim tough love.

I loved this movie. The performances given by Michelle Williams, Lucas Hedges and Casey Affleck were fantastic. I think they are very deserving of their Oscar Nominations. This is the story about a guilt ridden man, Lee Chandler, who comes back to his hometown after receiving news that his brother had passed and is told he was given guardianship of his teenaged nephew. The story is told in the present time where he is overwhelmed and unsure about taking on taking care of his nephew and in flashbacks of the tragic story of his estrangement from his ex-wife played by the lovely and talented Michelle Williams and why he left Manchester in the first place. This movie made me cry buckets but also made me laugh too.

It's a great movie about life, love and forgiveness.
