and that's a good thing! I'm 54 and have had revolvers since ...

and that's a good thing! I'm 54 and have had revolvers since ...
A must have for anyone serious about self defense! For some of us who have been shooting for some time, there will be parts of this book that are simply a refresher, and that's a good thing! I'm 54 and have had revolvers since I was 18, and I still learned a lot from this book. It's not enough just to carry and think you are protected...you have to practice, and this book is loaded with different drills. And while it focuses on the snubnose revolver, practicing these drills with your snubby will translate into making you a better shooter with any handgun. The snubnose revolver may be the easiest gun to carry, and the hardest to shoot well. Use this book to master your snubby, and you'll be well positioned to protect yourself and your loved ones with just about anything. Buy it!

Grant Cunningham provides common sense, totally realistic and practical guidance on handgun handling in a stress-filled life threatening situation: handle the weapon from the natural fight-or-flight postiion your body will assume when threatened. Forget arguing over "Isoceles or Weaver" stance, because both are equally useless when your body naturally assumes the fight-or-flight-stance when you are facing a life-or-death moment confronted by a predator who will kill you the split second you give him the opening.

For new concealed weapons permit holders, I HIGHLY recommend your first gun be a small-frame 5-shot 38/357 revovler, firing 38 Special +P ammo.
*The primary reason is that when you can competently handle and fire that small-frame 38, you will be able to handle ANY handgun with competence and accuracy. The small-frame double-action revolver will quickly reveal the weakenesses in an individual's pistol shooting capability. I will say this bluntly and to the point: if YOU cannot accurately and effectively fire a small frame 38 revolver, then YOU are not a competent pistol shooter because YOU have major weaknesses in your pistol shooting techniques that need to be addressed.
*The secondary reason for the small-frame 38 revovler, is that often the small-frame 38 is the only serious-caliber, reliable weapon that will be concealable in a light-clothing situation. This is why so many small-frame 38's are STILL carried in the day of the polymer-framed auto-pistol.

The small-framed 38 revolver is a timeless design, that remains practical, capable, effective, and incredibly reliable, even in the 21st Century. Grant Cunningham has literally written the book on practical use of this timeless handgun. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED is an understatement.

Well, not because of all the exclamation points--which are annoying but don't lessen the value of the content.
Aside from Ed Lovette's dated SNUBBY REVOLVER (2002), is there another book that focuses on this type of firearm? Cunningham seems to be deliberately avoiding the cloak-and-dagger context of the earlier book, as he did in GUN DIGEST BOOK OF THE REVOLVER (2011). I reread the latter before reading PROTECT YOURSELF, and it is true that there is a great deal of overlap in the basics. To write otherwise and leave out the basics, however, would leave a skinny book but more importantly would ignore those who really are starting out with a snubby. And given the concealed-carry craze, Cunningham made the right choice.
If Cunningham has a theory of shooting it is matching the necessity of shooting with physiological reactions under stress. Thus rather than emphasizing "true tales of the Old West" (or anywhere else) he talks about the nervous system of the eye or the degradation of dexterity. Cunningham insists that these deficiencies cannot be eliminated by practice--instead, what is practiced must take account of mental and physical reactions that will only arise under the stress of an actual attack--what Cunningham describes as an "ambush."
But the book is still technical (rather than tactical). It might be nice to know (or to hear Cunningham's thoughts about) whether that ambush is perpetrated with a firearm, a knife, or bare hands. The human target is almost entirely absent from this book.
Perhaps it is understandable that gun writers are reluctant to acknowledge other books. This one acknowledges websites, which is perhaps appropriate with Cunningham's self-proclaimed iconoclasm (regarding, for instance, using sights or leaving your home-defense gun unloaded). But there is much here that reminds me in terminology as well as content of STOPPING THE SCHOOL SHOOTING: DEFENSIVE REVOLVER FOR TEACHERS, a POD book (as this one apparently is) that was offered briefly a few years ago.And what about those earlier revolver books like Lovette's (or Jordan's or McGivern's)? Is nothing to be learned from those who wrote about the revolver when the revolver was state-of-the-art? Perhaps the front-sight-focus was an irrelevant fad: was the rest of it? is target shooting and plinking really so alien to personal defense?
By the way, does anyone hold a revolver in line with his nose--isn't it in line with his dominant eye? Reminds me of that Cyclops guy in KRULL.
Something has to be said about the evolution of Cunningham's hair. In a world where so many self-defense "experts" are tactically (i.e, artificially) hairless, it's refreshing to see a gunwriter who is comfortable with both short and long hair.
PROTECT YOURSELF WITH YOUR SNUBNOSE REVOLVER is still the best book on the short barrelled revolver. I would like to see a Michael de Bethencourt book as well.

A very well written, and comprehensive book, on the current theoretical dogma that exists among the so-called combat handgunners, concerning the use of the handgun in combat, with an emphasis on the snubnose revolver.
I am old. I have been there, done that. I have seen the Elephant. The snubnose was designed for combat, up close, and personal, not just for the purpose of concealment. The book misses that point, and the why, for the many reasons that a short barrel, is truly useful in combat, entirely.
Playing games, and shooting stationary paper targets are all good, and well, but they are night from day different, from actual life, and death combat. Sykes, Fairbairn, and especially Applegate, got it right, long ago, in the Real World. Their knowledge, and experience will give you a very real, definite edge, that might possibly help keep you, and those you love, and protect, alive to see another day.

This book is 5 stars if you are new to self defense shooting and handguns in general. I like Grant Cunningham because he is realistic and down to earth. This book isn't filled with a lot of "tactical" stuff. its written for people who have a normal life, go to work every day, and feel they need a firearm for protection. Contrary to most current gun writers, Grant likes revolvers for personal protection. I think his reasoning is excellent. Revolvers are safe, easy to use, intuitive and even people in your family who really don't have much interest in guns will be able to use them effectively with minimum training and practice.

If you have some experience with handguns and already have your own opinions as to gun type, caliber, etc, then this book will seem overly simple to you and you will probably not learn much new stuff. But if you need to know about handguns to defend your family and don't have a lot of experience this book is just about the best you can get.
