Bought for a retro PC because I didn't want to go through the hassle of finding a working magnetic IDE drive. My drive came with data already on it and was bootable into some kind of DOS. There seemed to be some kind of test program and some MP3 files whose names were in a non-Latin character encoding. I'm not sure if this is a refurb, used, or if the data was original to the device as some kind of test suite. This is not a big deal to me as this is for a hobby retro machine and the drive took a full format just fine and I haven't run into any issues.
Bought this to put in a Compaq Portable III originally. The IDE port is right up against the case, so it didn't have room to accomodate this module. I had to buy and IDE extender cable. That did the trick. But then at a later date when I wanted to use it in something else, it held onto the extender cable with such a death grip, it destroyed the cable in the process of removing it. There is no need for the fit to be that tight! Then, there's the power cable that comes with it. I had this in a box of stuff, went to take it out of the box, and one of the wires had ripped completely off of the connector. It seems it's very delicate, the smallest amount of pressure and it comes right off. In the process of trying to take the now broken power adapter out of the module, which I tried to do without any pulling on the wire, the 2nd wire came off. The connector to the power cable was in there so tightly, it require breaking plastic to get it to come out. There's no repairing this, and I'm not sure where to even find a power cable for this by itself, probably wouldn't be much more to buy another module.....and have the same process repeat itself.
Basically, yeah, it works....but the quality is absolute garbage. Good luck not breaking it if you look at it wrong.
Plugs in and works. This is a fantastic replacement for the old, unreliable IDE drives of the past. If you are using vintage hardware, get one of these over a 20 year old hard drive. The price and reliability alone make it worth it and the speed is noticably faster, too.

There's a lot of You Toob videos showing retro PC builders using all sorts of weird adapters for SD and CF cards for hard drives. I find those options, which initially appear to be clever, dysfunctional in practice. SLow transfer speeds, problematic partitioning, etc. These direct-on-the-motherboard SSDs, however, are fantstic. Full hard drive speeds, so far reliable, and bonus of being impervious to motion damage.
The hunt for hard drives that can be used on old 386/486/erly Pentium retro builds are over. These things are the perfect answer. I'll be buying a box of these for all my future retro PC builds.
Note: One reviewer noted that his SSD drive came pre-formatted with data on it. Mine did too. I think that's how they test them before they go out the door.
