A Terrific, Feature-Laden, Economical C-Stand, But The Base Is Not a True 1-1/8" Socket

A Terrific, Feature-Laden, Economical C-Stand, But The Base Is Not a True 1-1/8" Socket
Aside from one problem, these are perhaps the most useful, well-designed and economical C-stands I've ever seen.Starting at the bottom, it's a turtle style, meaning the center column is removable. This allows for easy transport. But here's the problem: the column's diameter where it slides into the turtle is NOT STANDARD DIAMETER. It's 1.095". It should be 1.125" (1-1/8"). This means standard accessories will not fit into the turtle base.Nothing's more clumsy than a folded C-stand. The best way to transport a standard single-piece C-stand is with a custom cart made for the job like the C-Stand Cart (cart only, stands not included) for only $461. And you'll need a lift-gate truck to move the filled cart about. With two-piece C-stands like this Neewer beauty, you take the center column off, fold up the turtle base and carry them separately on any cart. The turtle base folds using spring pressure detents. The legs, when in the detents, are splayed properly. They don't have a sliding "crazy leg" for uneven terrain like the Avenger A2033LKIT Steel 40-Inch Sliding Leg C-Stand with Grip Kit (Chrome). Use these on flat floors.Because the turtle base does not accept a 1-1/8" column, it cannot be used as a low-boy stand. A gazinta like the Kupo junior-to-baby adapter Kupo Adapter, Junior to Baby, 1-1/8-Inch Stud to 5/8-Inch Stud, KG006312, will not drop it into the turtle base. This is very disappointing. I actually bought a Kupo 20" column so I could have two different heights, but the Kupo will not fit into this Neewer.Moving up is the unique center post. It has two strong internal springs that act like shock absorbers. If you have a heavy light up in the air or a backdrop suspended between two of these stands and some amateur loosens one of the lock handles too much without holding up the weight, the column will certainly slide all the way down. If he's lucky, he doesn't have his hand on the center post because a normal stand will pinch and/or crush it. This stand will stop short and bounce on the spring. The best I've seen on other stands is a thick rubber O-ring that softens the descent only a little. These springs may even save an expensive bulb's filament from damage as the lighting unit bounces off the spring, but does not bottom out. Other stands may have these features, but this Neewer is the first I've seen. Check out the video. There is a neoprene sleeve for gripping the post. It's a good, thick, solid grip that should last. The two extension sections elevate and lower smoothly, controlled by large friction knobs. The castings are solid and well finished with no sharp edges, secured to the center post by a large set screw. An Allen wrench is included should this set screw loosen over time or you want to take the column apart.Moving up to the gobo arm, it's strong steel with a 5/8" spud at both ends. One spud end has a 1/4-20 thread on it and the other end has a 3/8-16 thread on it. With these two threads, plus the 5/8" spuds, you can mount just about anything. Both thread ends are protected by small rubber caps, which you'll probably lose after the first shoot unless you put them in your pocket. The arm has two gobo clamps: one to adapt the arm to the stand and one for holding accessories like scrims, reflectors, softboxes or flags. Both slide the full length of the arm. You can add a set screw (not included) if you desire to lock them to the arm. The clamps have fine-tooth interlocking faces instead of a leather or composite friction washer. If you loosen the clamp knob sufficiently, the teeth will clear each other without wearing themselves off. Once locked together, I cannot imagine the gobo arm sagging and changing its angle, no matter how much the light weighs. Both clamps are nicely finished and have large, easily gripped locking knobs. The tightening washers are well-greased to prevent galling and are shaped like miniature tripod ball mounts -- a cup-shaped bottom fits into a matching cup-shaped hollow in the clamp. This allows the two halves of the clamp to move to accommodate different diameters of flag pins, but still tighten securely. Easier seen than explained.Packaging was excellent: bubble wrap around every piece, then into Styrofoam shipping blocks, then into an inner cardboard box then two of those boxes into an outer cardboard box. I pity the UPS guy who had to deliver the thing, but both stands arrived in perfect condition. I set them up in a few minutes. For about $105 each, the only way I'd be more pleased is if the turtle had a standard socket size. Had to take a star off. And now I have to send back my Kupo 20" column %^$#$$!!

I love the sturdiness for onsite shoots in high wind, even on uneven ground. I used a round tool pouch from Husky as a counter weight for the extension bar to hold my umbrella steady.

I used a 5/8th inch eyelet snap hook to hold the bag, it can also use a water bottle if needed. The overall construction is stainless steel and the turn handles are metal and comes thickly greased from the factory. If you do get these stands, I recommend tightening down the turtle base, and wipe the grease from the handles.

One stand weighs around 25 lbs, steady enough to hold a battery pack lighting setup. The turle base can't adapt to stairs, but at this price point, these stands will last a lifetime.

The stand is spring loaded and all the handles lock in smoothly. In testing the stands integrity, I hung 15lbs of clothing in balance on the extension bar. The bar bowed, but after removing the clothing, the bar was straight again.

Putting this on a wheeled cart is the best way to haul these stands around, even when I carried the stand without the base, it's hard to hold it steady. I used a tie down strap around the monolight handle to keep the stand in balance, and it's doable for half day sessions when the wind is minimum.

I like these things, they are very sturdy and well made as well as heavy. I replaced all the tripod style stands I got with my lights, these work much better. They are heavy enough that I can put on a light and even use the extension arm usually without needing to sandbag them. For heavier loads you can always drop some sandbags on the legs, they are solid enough to take it.
They come apart for travel but are still quite heavy and about 5 foot long when disassembled, so you won't be backpacking with these. But they are great for hanging a light with a big softbox over a table, or if you attach a ball-head you can use it to put a camera up nice and high.

These stands have definitely been a great purchase for me. I’ve bought two sets (total of four stands). They are rock solid, great finish, easy to use, and well worth the money. They are not light weight, so you’ll need some muscle if you’re planning on walking a while to get to your location, but I like knowing that they won’t tip over easily. I’ve purchased a wagon separately to make transport less of an effort.
The stands are great quality and have a foam grip that make them comfortable to move around.

Well built, easy to assemble, sturdy, extensions are spring loaded and dampened.
The 4ft boom gives a lot of versatility plus extending beyond the 10 foot height.
Disassembles to about 4 feet in length with legs removed.
Supports all my equipment, softboxes, umbrella, strip boxes, lights and strobes.
Legs height is not aductable, not an issue for me.
These are not light weight, but not too heavy to be somewhat portable.
    Great value.

These are our first C Stands and they are crazy amazing for studio use. We use the regular folding stands in studio as well and carry them to locations. These C Stands would NOT be a good option to try to use for work that requires them to be portable. They are fairly heavy, however, that is what makes them so sturdy for heavier lights and attachments. The clamps shown on the boom arm are about the size of a soft ball. Everything about these seems to be very well made. They are built like tanks and I'm sure they will be in use for a long time.

I love these c-stands! I use them on every single shoot and actually own 3 of them. You can always use more stands though, I wish I had 10. I have a couple reviews of them on my YouTube channel, which I will try to load to Amazon later. They have a solid metal build. All of the knobs and springs work well. They're heavy, but that can be expected. Seriously, I live and die by these things on set! SO MANY USES! Just buy them already. At this price, they can't be beat. Other c-stands are WAY TOO expensive.

Fantastic, durable stands, would buy again in a heartbeat. One of the two I bought has been exposed to the most extreme elements: been to the beach repeatedly, stood up in water, been left outside during a Canadian winter, etc. and is still in fantastic shape. I sold them after two years to move continents, but the DP friend I sold them to says they're still serving him well regularly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un trépied C Stand robuste
Reviewed in France on August 17, 2024
