For much of the three and a half year period since the release of Lost In The Dream, The War On Drugs' frontman, Adam Granduciel, led the charge for his Philadelphia-based sextet as he holed up in studios in New York and Los Angeles to write, record, edit, and tinker-but, above all, to busy himself in work. Teaming up with engineer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Weezer), Granduciel challenged the notion of what it means to create a fully realized piece of music in today's modern landscape. Calling on his bandmates - bassist Dave Hartley, keyboarding Robbie Bennett, drummer Charlie Hall and multi-instrumentalists Anthony LaMarca and Jon Natchez -- continuously throughout the process, the result is a "band record" in the noblest sense, featuring collaboration, coordination, and confidence at every turn. Through those years of relocation, the revisiting and reexamining of endless hours of recordings, unbridled exploration and exuberance, Granduciel's gritty love of his craft succeeded in pushing the band to great heights.

Impressive Outing

This is my first exposure to this band. I'm very impressed. "Up All Night", "Pain", "Clean Living", and especially "Thinking Of A Place" are all great songs. That harmonica on "Thinking Of A Place" is exquisite. And yeah - Adam Granduciel definitely has the Dylan/Tom Petty thing going on. But they also remind me of Bruce Hornsby, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young. I've heard some people compare them to Arcade Fire but I don't see that at all. Planning to see them live in October here in Denver. Hey I'm 61 - so listening to this stuff helps keep me young!

When Kurt Vile left the War on Drugs to go full time with his band the Violators, it was only natural Adam Granduciel's subsequent depression and introspection would have a profound change in the sound and direction of the band. The refocusing of Granduciel's already stellar guitar work paired with a renewed introspection into more personal songwriting yielded 2014's Lost in a Dream, taking the listener places that prior releases Barrel of Batteries and Slave Ambient never hinted were forthcoming. Lost in a Dream landed TWOD on many 'Best of' lists in 2014. The subsequent tour in support brought legions of new fans eager to explore Granduciel's lush visions. Rarely has any one guitar player amassed such an impressive cache of effects pedals on one stage, blending them seamlessly into a gorgeous landscape of achingly beautiful melodies. With 2017's A Deeper Understanding, Granduciel goes even further into a those spaces created in Lost. Fans will be pleased to know he not only equals, but exceeds the paths created in that landmark album. For those who have held on to their turntables, it's well worth the effort to seek out the double vinyl release. A landmark album from a singer/songwriter/master guitarist at the top of his game. Five stars.

Calming, comforting, exhilarating, inspiring, and contemplative. I can think of few pieces of music that can create such a bundle of emotions simultaneously. Perhaps the best of Beethoven, Mahler or Bruckner. The War on Drugs elevates the meaning of music; the title of this album is a perfect encapsulation of what's inside. Since you are on this page, and if you don't have this album already, no need to get into describing individual songs, just get a copy as soon as you can.

I honestly can't remember the last time I've written a review for anything, but this album is so superb that I just felt I needed to. I don't really have anything profound to say, I won't compare to other music/bands that I've heard in the past, but I'll just say that this is, in my opinion, a masterpiece of songwriting and musicianship that I can't get enough of. It's Like Someone Washed My Soul...

...in an ocean of warm saltwater. The tide goes in, the tide goes out, and my heart lays upon the sand being scrubbed clean of the pain over and over again. How else can I describe it? Imagine sitting in your favorite restaurant, with your best friends, having just eaten, and everyone is laughing. You are content, in that moment. That warmth in your heart? This music is that afterglow. It bathes you in a soundscape of rapturous well-being. I'm not certain I can describe it any other way.

Buy this album. I'm not kidding. You will not regret it.

Lives Up to Expectations

After just a few spins, the new album from The War On Drugs lives up the expectations set by "Lost In a Dream." Namely, we get great music, with the same guitar fireworks, driving synth and piano, and steady rhythm section that Adam Granduciel and company deliver so well.

"Strangest Thing" is an amazing piece of American music. The steady intro section, the glorious middle part, and the go-home latter half are all pieces of rock 'n' roll perfection.

"A Deeper Understanding" is sad, and introspective, and hopeful at the same time. Lots of influences here, all distilled through a gauzy modern songcraft that made the three-year wait worth it. And for a late-summer release, it totally fits this time of year: cool nights, foggy mornings, and golden hour sunsets set to music.

***********I have been listening to Lost in a Dream exclusively since it was released. It sounds like a progression through my life, I was very ill and trying to find my way. My life was in every song and the music and videos are fantastic. I kept thinking how do you top this.
A Deeper Understanding is just as good, maybe better. It's somehow lighter and more hopeful and uplifting. I love you Adam, your brain is like mine. Hope you enjoyed the eclipse and thanks for including the lyrics. Absolutely stellar!!!! **********

Those Guitar Solos, That Blessed Reverb

You tell yourself you won't obsess over this one like you did with 'Lost in the Dream', but damn if you don't fail again. It's all I want to do to just bring it up to anyone and everyone. Lyrically, it can get a bit derivative, but all forgivable with those guitar solos and that blessed reverb.

Highlights:
- Pain (the outro guitar solos!)
- Thinking of a Place (if only 11 minutes weren't longer)
- In Chains (a slow burn)
