From the manufacturer
The remarkable Q Series floorstanding speakers excel when space is limited. Featuring the signature KEF Uni-Q driver array the Q950s deliver detailed natural sound with high clarity and tight bass. A commanding 8 in. Uni-Q driver paired with an 8 in. Woofer and two 8 in. ABRs offers the ultimate in bass performance and home theater. Immerse yourself in heart pounding action with the KEF Q950 Floorstanders.
"Sit anywhere" Uni-Q Sound
At the heart of the evolved Q Series is the Uni-Q driver array. KEF's signature innovation places the tweeter in the acoustic center of the midrange cone, bringing the acoustic ideal of a single point source closer than ever to realisation. The result is a more detailed, more accurate three-dimensional sound image, which is dispersed more evenly throughout the room than is possible with a conventional speaker. Uni-Q's ultra-wide dispersion is further enhanced by KEF's 'tangerine' waveguide over the tweeter dome.

|
|---|---|---|
Uni-Q sound taken to the next levelWith the addition of the damped tweeter loading tube providing a gentle termination of sound produced from the back of the tweeter, lower treble performance is improved dramatically and a new low-distortion inductor on the crossover provides cleaner bass. To optimize the resolution and purity of the Q Series bookshelf speakers, the Uni-Q driver has been repositioned to the center of the cabinet to reduce unwanted internal resonance and adds refinement to their sonic clarity and detail. |
Q Series Advanced Cabinet DesignIn the Q Series Floorstanders the Uni-Q driver has been placed in sealed box within the cabinet. The closed box midrange cabinet design reduces the load on the Uni-Q midrange cone, increasing clarity and detail while delivering cleaner, punchier bass. Midrange clarity is enhanced again through improvements to the mid-bass driver that allowed the DC blocking capacitor to be eliminated. Its removal also created a more natural bass roll-off between the drivers. |
Q Series WoofersLow-frequency (LF) drivers now have a larger roll surround, along with a new spider suspension to produce cleaner bass at high volumes. A new cone structure improves midrange clarity, and an enhanced Auxiliary Bass Radiators (ABRs) with a new surround and rear suspension delivers better controlled and more impressive bass. |

the Q950's sit to either side of the front wall, the right one about a foot out from right corner, with one of those spaces behind it, and the left one in the beginning of a hallway formed by an angle of the front wall and the staircase. it's an impossible situation, but the Qs laugh at it and sing in a voice i never thought possible for this space.
now I'm pretty old and my ears haven't been what they were since the 60's, but the highs, mids and lows are remarkable. and soundstage! how is that possible in this room?! the base may not be as deep as one may expect for 2 8" woofers per speaker, my old Advents seemed deeper, though they were 10 inch, and maybe they were just softer, the Qs are taut, but that is likely the trade off for closed cabinets, and it's those closed cabs that i attribute to the sound of the Qs in this room. they are set up in the only place i can put them, with very limited flexibility, even for angling them. if you have a placement problem, these speakers are the solution.
i bought the Walnut. they are so pretty! i will probably get the grills just to limit the dust buildup when i'm not listening to them, but it may be a while before that happens, in part bc they are also awesome as front speakers in a 5.1 system for streaming movies. outstanding movie sound...rockets, ricochets, and dialogue quality. btw, my source is a getting old Yamaha tsr-7810 AV receiver, 95 watts/channel, usually playing thru a Bluesound Node. the Qs have given the Yamaha new life.
a downside is that the Qs are as good as the source, so great with hi res amazon music, but not so with old mp3 files on a USB, and great for streaming movies, but not so much with Dish.
so i will end as i began, the Q950s sound outstanding and appear to be very forgiving of room placement and acoustics. and they were on sale!
I wanted to get away from my 5.1 system which was difficult to wire up every time, hide the wires, mount the speakers, adjust the sound, and never sounded quite right for music. Good for movies, but not music. So I decided on a 2.1 system with floor standing speakers. Did my research and settled on these as not only did the have good reviews, but they looked good too.
I will say, they do like power. At first I used my 7.1 A/V receiver to power them with only 55 watts per channel. They sounded ok in the mids and highs but lacked bass. I eventually got a dedicated 2 channel amp, the Yamaha R-N803 with 145 watts per channel and WOW did it wake these speakers up. The bass was so good I almost didn’t need a sub any more (but I like lots of bass so kept it, just turned down a lot) and the mids and highs went to a new level. I love how everything is matched, it all meshes so well. Nothing is harsh, nothing pierces the ear or sounds muddy or is out of place. The bass doesn’t drone. Sitting in the middle of them I can close my eyes and sound stage is insane. Voices are where the should be, instruments are where they should be. And I have yet to push these speakers to their SPL limits but I have turned them up very very loud, they just don’t even seem to be breaking a sweat. Zero distortion.
To sum it up, I do not miss my surround system at all. I hope to keep these for many years and will look at KEF in the future if the time ever comes again.

Purchased each side separately: Oct 2020 for CAD$570+tax (Warehouse deals), Nov 2020 for $750+tax (Kef Store, sale)
Audio Quality: The Q950s are high quality, well engineered speakers that produces a clear, accurate, neutral/balanced, effortless sound. Easy to drive and will work with most amps and receivers. These are so good that you cannot tell which speaker the sound is coming from at times and can place the position of the instruments, voices and other sounds in relation to each other easily. I've tried this with a couple receivers, the better they are-- the better the sound.
Ease of use: These are very user-friendly speakers-- very easy to set-up and place in any room. Creates a large, airy, open sound stage, and sound amazing regardless of the room and where you sit. You don't need to fiddle with position, laser pointers, string, seating and other ridiculous things to achieve perfection.
Applications: Perfect for listening to music, home theatre and parties. Can easily be part of a larger home theatre system. These things can fill a small auditorium easily.
Build Quality: Very strong sturdy cabinet. Their overly expensive grill are recommended for areas with any amount of traffic.
Appearance: The matte dark black colour makes them disappear in any home theatre setup. While they are large, tall speakers, they are understated and become less noticeable over time. Dust is easily visible and will pick up nicks and scratches over time.
Assembly: Minimum assembly needed for the feed. Minor annoyance is that tweezers are required to remove the caps in the banana plug connectors.
Response & Feedback: I have often been told how clear my music is, especially the tightness of bass, from friends who never talk about music/sound quality.
Tips for the rest of us (Non-audiophiles):
- Break in: Straight out the the box, on first use, these might sound painfully high pitch/screetchy. Play them frequently for a few weeks and you'll end up with a neutral sounding set of speakers.
- Tone control: These are neutrally tuned audiophile speakers and will comparatively sound flat. Use your amp's equalizer/tone control to get the sound you like; for a warmer sound-- add some bass. Or play with the treble for brightness, add mids for voice and movies. These speakers can be anything you want with a little tinkering.
- Amp: Very easy to drive, virtually anything works, but a good powerful amp makes them sound out of this world!
This is one of my few luxury buys-- and absolutely don't regret it.
