PROS: Cheap, solid 1080p IPS screen, convertible, relatively light. Good build quality despite plastic body. Surprisingly usable keyboard and trackpad. Fanless, quiet, long battery life. Sub-$200!

CONS: Painfully slow storage. Limited upgrade options. Less-than-cutting-edge styling. Weak CPU.

SUMMARY: It's a sub-$200 fanless 2-in-1 with a 1080p IPS screen! With all its shortcomings, it's the perfect cheapo second laptop. Either buy this, buy something in a higher price range, or save your money for next year's Gemini Lake 2-in-1s.

First off, let's talk aesthetics: Despite being small, this thing's design is chunky, turquoise, and it's got thick bezels. Which is kind of why I like it. It's like a great computer in a Fisher Price body. The plasticky body makes it feel like something you can toss around without worry (Gorilla Glass on the display!). To its credit, it did arrive in pristine condition with all the marketing stickers attached and an almost-full battery.

A redesign is due out any day that is slicker looking and lighter, but the internals are basically the same and the battery life is shorter. Plus, it will cost at least $300. Not worth it, in my opinion.

This 1st gen Spin 1 is an incredible value. It doesn't have very hi-tech bells and whistles (USB-C, SSD, Core i3, 5, or 7), but it works really well, running 64-bit Windows 10 with 4GB of RAM. I purchased it as a second laptop after being disappointed by the old E100 netbook, 1st gen Asus T100, and tolerating a C720 Chromebook for the past few years.

The Spin 1 is better in all regards. And it's sub-$200.

It was a bit of a pain updating the device when it arrived, because - this should come as no surprise - the machine is slow. Specifically, the 32GB of eMMC storage are abysmally lethargic and short in supply. You should purchase this device primarily as a note taker/web surfer/media consumer/travel device.

After a couple hours of removing bloatware, updating drivers and system software, and running antivirus (you never know with a refurbished), it was good to go. I was able to run 1080p content no problem and browse the internet with multiple tabs in Chrome. The 1080p IPS screen is great, though not super-bright. The colors aren't as vibrant as my Macbook Pro's Retina display, but it's leaps and bounds beyond what I've paid for in the past. The speakers are solid - loudish and well-placed for the 2-in-1 form factor - kind of side and bottom. They work perfectly when in tent mode.

Best of all, the fanless computer is completely silent. It gets warm, not hot, when stressed - nothing uncomfortable. The lack of moving parts and the lame, but efficient, processor give the Spin 1 excellent battery life. Also, it feels more rugged, because there are no fans to break or ventilation ports.

The keyboard is good, with little flex. I was able to type comfortably without any re-adjustment (I considered the Miix 320, but the keyboard layout was a nonstarter). The trackpad is almost as good as my MacBook - it uses Microsoft Precision drivers, which is apparently something good. The hinge feels rugged and smooth, but we'll see as time goes by. The network card is fast (AC) and all my Bluetooth devices work seamlessly with it.

I haven't yet tried any applications that are too resource intensive, but that's not why I bought this device. But I was expecting it to be annoyingly clunky, like my old E100 and T100 devices. For all basic tasks, it works great.

With regards to gaming, I don't have too much to report because...it's a cheap computer with a weak processor and no graphics card. I tried the original Fallout from 20 years ago and it plays great. But you should probably skip anything that requires significant 3D rendering.

The weakest part of the device is easily the eMMC storage. It's slow and small, like the last kid to get picked in a flag football game. With only 32GB, you don't have much to work with after you install a few apps and Steam. According to Acer, there is no upgrade path for the internal storage (I haven't cracked it open), but you can use the microSD slot to add as much (slower) storage as you want.

I think you can upgrade the RAM to 8GB, but why would you? It works just fine with 4. It'd be an extra $70 to upgrade the RAM. Better to put that money towards buying a 2-in-1 with SSD storage. That's the real bottleneck.

All in all, a great buy. I'm very pleased. If it lasts a year, it's still a great buy, but I expect it to last at least a few. I don't know why this isn't a more popular computer.

I Highly Recommend for LIGHT Duty as Intended!

I bought mine factory new on October 23, 2017, from Target. The refurbish model has the same factory specs as the factory NEW. I turned it on and it loaded Win 10, 1703, just fine, following the screen instructions. The purchase timing was right, as MS came out with new version 1709. I had no other software or downloads installed as yet and there was 12GB free HD space. There was just enough free space to download and install version 1709, which took some time, but installed perfectly. After the install, I performed the usual Disk Cleanup, which I had it also remove the old Win 10, 1703, as why keep it and use up an additional HD space. Then I ran the Defrag HD and there was 11.1GB free space still left. Terrific! Since I only use this 11.6 for, traveling, use of Wi-Fi at the local restaurant while having breakfast, doing e-mails and surfing the internet, and access to iCloud, when out and about, this is Acer 11" is more than adequate for my needs. If I wanted something better, I would have chosen a more expensive budget quad core processor with 500GB HD. I did buy a 32GB Micro SD card and inserted it into the side slot, for additional downloading and installing more software. So, you can also use an external HD. I like the HD touch screen, which is very sensitive. I love the nice soft touch and response of the keyboard and touch pad. It is light weight and I have not gone beyond 5 hours on battery, but understand it should last 7 hours. For the budget priced dual core processor, it is fast enough for my application[s].

This 2-in-1 laptop is not thin, it is not light, and it is not powerful. It is, however, an excellent value at refurb pricing if you need a basic laptop/tablet.

Best feature: Superb full-HD touchscreen. It is bright, has good color, and is sharp, with higher pixel density than most monitors.

Worst feature: Inadequate storage. 32 Gb of flash storage isn't enough for Win10 and the Acer bloatware. Adding a micro SDcard will make room for documents, photos, videos, music, etc., but doesn't really solve the storage problem.

Tradeoff: The unfashionably wide bezel around the screen allows for a full-size keyboard and a physically larger battery on the other half of the clamshell, but size adds weight.

Other stuff: Has 802.1ac wifi. Very good battery life. Decent keyboard and touchpad. Three USB ports, one of which is USB 3.0. Full-size HDMI port. Sound is a little tinny, as may be expected in an inexpensive laptop. Sound is OK for YouTube cat videos and such, but you'll want to send good music and movies to external speakers.

Tip 1: Do a custom re-installation of Win10 and totally blow away the Acer configuration. That will free up several gigabytes.

Tip 2: Remove hiberfil.sys and reduce the size of the pagefile to recover more storage space.

Tip 3: Adjust power settings to High Performance to get the most out of the CPU.

Tip 4: Download a BIOS update from Acer's support site.

Bottom Line: But for the lack of adequate (or upgradeable) storage, this laptop would be at the top of its class.
