- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2024In my opinion, this lens is the most suitable choice for real estate photography. I considered f/2.8 GM or f/4, but ultimately opted for this lens and believe it is a worthwhile investment.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2020I create photography and video tours of Realtors, Architects, and Builders. A big part of what I do is shooting video of me "walking through" a house. Showing how rooms connect together and such. This lens is perfect for that.
Speed is essential for what I do. The light levels in various rooms of a house can be VERY different and as I walk from room-to-room I can't be manually dialing in ISO/Aperture settings. I need the camera to do this for me on-the-fly.
This lens enables me to do that.
I typically film at 16 mm but will sometimes go to 14mm for very small and cramped spaces. This lens allows for that. In order to be able to work quickly I shoot in S-Priority and Auto ISO. Here's how that helps.
When shooting S-Priority and Auto ISO together the camera will work "both ends" of the histogram. That is, when I walk into a darker space like a master bedroom with darker, more intimate paint on the walls, the camera will open aperture all the way to F4 and then start boosting ISO to account for the lower light levels. When I walk out of that room into a brightly lit great room the camera will bottom out ISO and then start crushing down the aperture to protect highlights. All on the fly.
I've seen the camera go all the way to f16 because the light was too bright where the camera was pointed but then as I panned to the right and moved to a different place it would go to f8 and then ultimately back to f4 again as I stepped into the less brightly lit space of the kitchen.
A manual lens would not be able to do this. You need a fly-by-wire lens like this one. And this is the only fly-by-wire lens that will allow me to go wide all the way to to 14mm. I used my 16-35 f4 for a year or so before getting this lens. It worked well but I was always frustrated in those situations where I needed to go to 14mm and couldn't.
Ultimately, this lens is ideal for creating walk-through real estate videos or for filming the walk-through portions of more complex films like "behind the design" style architecture documentaries.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2017This is an outstanding lens for 99.9% of photographers who want a UWA for Sony mirrorless. However, the distortion is significant.
This distortion is hugely reduced by the lens profiles available in Adobe products. Almost everyone will love this lens. However, if you're doing high-end or high-volume work shooting interiors, the distortion of the Canon TSEs or 11-24mm is half or less that of the Sony.
The Sony has less CA than the Canon 11-24, but a lot more ghosting from bright points of light.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2019Like many people, I really agonized between this lens and Sony's 16-35mm. I'm SO glad I went with this one, and I think you will be, too, if your main uses are the same as mine: interior photos and landscapes. It may not sound like much of a difference between 12mm and 16mm of view, but it really is (I know this because I've been zooming out to 16mm with this 12-24mm lens—just for fun— and I can't believe how much I'm loosing). This lens has superb sharpness virtually from edge to edge, even at 12mm. The very, very slight amount of smudging at the extreme edges of a 12mm shot is hardly worth mentioning at all. This lens is fantastic value and a truly excellent lens.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2023Really nice lens
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2024i was so excited for this day and it is mighty expensive just for me to send it back
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2017Very happy with this lens. I travel a great deal and weight is always an issue. While I have prime ultra-wide lenses, the flexibility of a zoom greatly reduces the need to swap lenses in the field or to have to move around to get the shot I want. The quality of images from this lens is very good. Now that I have had time to shoot with this lens, I will probably sell my ultra-wide primes. I wish I had this lens when I was shooting ice caves in Iceland. It is now a part of my standard camera kit for travel. For reference, I shoot with a Sony A7Rii body.

TheBirdNestReviewed in Canada on September 19, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Better than the f/2.8?
Personally, I'd avoid buying the G Master version in favor of this one. Save some money. This one has the same FOV, and if you want to take photos in a darker room, set up a tripod and use a longer exposure. If you're looking for something to shoot Astro, there are better lenses than both this and the G Master version of this. All in all, this lens has everything I need. Highly recommend for wide field landscape or real estate.

La calidad es muy buena, pero lo que no me gusto y hasta pense regresarlo si no fuera por que lo necesitaba es que a los pocos días bajo el precio bastante y con el mismo provedor.
AlanReviewed in Canada on November 26, 20195.0 out of 5 stars Best wide angle option IMO
If you need a wide angle lens, I couldn't recommend this option more! After purchasing the 16-35mm GM, it just doesn't compare in terms of versatility, and the lens quality of the G produces arguably sharper images overall. Plus, it pairs very well with the 17-28mm option on the market in case you need something with a lower f-stop for astrophotography or low light shooting. Don't even think about the 16-35 GM. Get this one instead.
ItaiReviewed in Canada on December 15, 20195.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Prespective
The Sony FE 12-24m F/4G gives an extremely wide perspective with well-controlled distortion and good consistent sharpness across the frame. The lens is particularly light while being one of the widest constant-aperture rectilinear zoom lenses available. The only downside is that it shows some heavy vignetting but, of all defects, this is the easiest one to correct by software with minimal impact on image quality.
R CroftReviewed in Canada on February 28, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Small, not too heavy, surprisingly sharp, low distortion.
I got this for night-urban monochrome, part of a project I'm working on. I have the 16-35GM and it's great, but I needed to go a little bit wider. The included photo is straight from a JPG, in-camera B&W mode, Sony a9. ISO 1600, s0.2, F/4, 13mm. Handheld. 11.15pm, natural 'urban light pollution' during a snowfall.
