BACK TO BASICS
When I got my new Z2G4 workstation I retrogressed and went back to the simplest, most basic mouse I could find stuffed somewhere in the back of my desk and guess what, I like it better. Over time I have learned that there are a few things I don’t want or need, such as multiple tiny buttons on the top or sides that always get pushed at the wrong time – all I want or need is a left button, a right button and a scroll wheel. I don’t even care if the scroll wheel doubles as a button or tilts from side to side. I also learned I don’t want or need a mouse that has any kind of variable dpi or sensitivity – as a graphic designer I want it to act and feel exactly the same time after time after time. The last thing is something I disagree on with some other users – buttons that are harder to click are not a negative to me and they in no way cause hand or finger pain, quite the opposite the last thing I want is to be moving my mouse around with my fingers laying lightly on it and suddenly a button presses and does something to my work I didn’t want it to. I only want the buttons to click when I want them to.
ERGONOMICS
The Intellimouse is larger than most but has an uncanny perfect fit into the palm of my hand. While it does have the two options buttons under the right thumb that most people use as forward and back, unlike so many models I have used my thumb falls naturally under those two buttons so I can’t possibly push them accidentally, yet when I do want to us them all I have to do is slide my thumb up slightly.
SURPRISE
A couple of things I did not expect, especially at the low end of the range, is the cool ice blue light at the heel of the mouse that helps me find it in a darkened room. It’s there, it looks cool, but it doesn’t overwhelm or dazzle like some brands do. It’s just a minor concern that as far as I can see there isn’t a way of shutting the light off when the computer is powered down , but maybe that’s just my system.
The other unexpected thing is that as soon as I plugged it in it loaded its own driver without having to download a large memory hogging app like Logitech does. The app recognized which mouse I have and gives me a few extra control options that the operating system doesn’t
HOW IT FEELS AND PERFORMS
Yes this device is at the low end of the range, although you can get mice for even less. But unlike them it is not cheap feeling. Unlike most others at the low end it’s not super light weighing about double that of mice included with most computers these days and it has just enough weight to not skitter around my desk. The cord isn’t the fancy armored kind that some manufacturers are pushing, it is soft and flexible to the point there is no difference between it and a wireless mouse. The pads on the bottom glide smoothly and the scroll wheel doesn’t run away from me, it turns with an intuitive amount of force. What is noticeably different from other low end mice is the precision, a critical thing for anyone who does editing, retouching or graphics. It is much more precise without slowing down to a crawl.
And on the subject of precision, for the first time I was able to get rid of my mouse pad completely and use the much larger flat surface of my desktop as a tracking surface. I now have a degree of control that I’ve only seen on my very expensive graphics tablets and I never have to worry about falling off the edge of the pad on long dragging operations.
BLISSFUL SILENCE
The final thing is also super important to me – I often work in my home studio into the late house of the night. A mouse that has loud plasticky sounding buttons and scroll wheel drives me up the wall. There have only been a couple of them I’ve ever owned that are silent or close to it. This one is one of the quietest I’ve ever owned. That would almost be reason enough for me to choose it.

I think it may be over 22 years, but I cannot actually remember when I started to use the MS Intelli Optical Mouse. While I was using it, I felt it was really a nice one to go with. It operated relatively smooth throughout working and gaming, it was very comfortable for my hand and wrist. The weight and the friction was in just good amount that I felt no fatigue over hours of use. I expected it would not be discontinued from the market without being substituted by more potent ones.
But as time went by, I realized that it was running out of stock and there were so many people who loved the MS IO mouse just like me. I managed to purchase a number of MS IOs and from then on I have been using those ones that I purchased just about the time it was discontinued.
I tried several other mice but I found nothing could be comparable to the MS IO mouse.
And, on 2018, I purchased two of this MS Classic IntelliMouse.
But while I had MS IO mouse, I did not open the box and tried this one.
Okay, meanwhile my IntelliOptical mouse seemed to go wrong. I couldn't bear unpredictable, spontaneous double clicking of left button any longer. So I decided to repair a few IO mice which were out of order and I picked one of this MS Classic IntelliMouse and tested it.
Now, I've been using this mouse for about 16 hours or so.
My first impression was that It's larger, heavier, built more robust, more beautiful, working more smooth and precise than MS Intelli Mouse Optical. I love the white tail light which can tell it's position in a dark room and those materials felt by my fingers and palms are pretty much better than the MS IOs. The surface is smoother and the lower part of side walls are coated with rubber-like material so that the mouse could be moved as if it was part of my hand. And increased DPIs(up to 3200) and report rate(1000/sec.) makes me feel that this is a true upgrade from the IO mouse. The cursor moves smoothly and precisely.
I felt that this is a little bit larger than the IO. My palm span is about 8 inches or 20 cm and I felt no difficulty in holding this mouse. I hope that the size should be similar to the IOs. Anyway good grip provides no discomfort related with increased size.
I remember some bad reviews which came out when this first appeared in the market. I was also somewhat scary to see such reviews. But, as a long term user of MS IO mice for decades, my first impression is very nice. The one significant issue would be like how long these good impressions can be maintained. I also purchased a number of Microsoft Pro Intellimice. I am expecting much more for them..
But I think this Classic Intellimouse is a definite upgrade from the previous version. I hope MS could keep up with the needs of customers and produce such good items for a long time.

Scroll wheel is amazing, got used to the slightly smaller size, felt great in hand.
However, it has an issue with mistaken single/double clicks. I've tried adjusting all settings and it's just pretty poor - you will try to single click and a double click happens. Adjust the speed; doesn't matter.
When you're renaming groups of files and need to click into them and marquee the filenames and rename, you will want to throw this mouse in the trash.
I think I gave it to one of the kids' computers. :)
If control over click/double clicks matter, don't buy this mouse.

Logitech MX Revolution is very good, indeed (better than Classic IntelliMouse), except that, unlike Microsoft mouses, when I highlight a text, it does not copy it automatically, at least under Linux where I click on a point in an input page and press the middle button. Voila, the text copy is pasted. This cut out a few clicking. I love this feature. I don't know how to reconfigure a Logitech (or Microsoft) mouse under Linux.
(Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Mouse, purchased on Jul 15 2015 - Amazon informs me, was not a good replacement, and it's dying a miserable death.).
This Classic is not as responsive or accurate as Revolution, or I have not got used to it. It was cheap when I finally got it (~ $30; ~ $60-70 when I put it on a wish list). It is not high enough for comfortable holding. The back button, which I use far more than the forward one, I have to search with the thumb. The forward one has a noticeable bump. With the way I hold the mouse, the thumb is naturally on it. To get at the back button is a bit of contortion for the thumb. 'Wired' does not do much for me. In fact it kinda gets in the way.
There is a new version (Microsoft NGX-? Pro IntelliMouse, ~ $80). It did not come up when I was ordering this one. If it had come up, I would have gotten it instead. It's been available for a few months.
The mouse itself is very comfortable & has a familiar shape to a Razer Deathadder I've owned years ago. It fits well with my ergonomic setup & has an overall clean aesthetic to it. I really didn't want any gamer elements to this desk as I use this computer mainly as a workstation & the simple modern white LED under glow is a nice touch.
Performance wise the optical tracking for me is very smooth however the fine accuracy in games is not it's forte. For me I am still playing around with in game sensitivities settings to find a comfortable medium for me as I only play FPS casually from time to time. So far 2600 DPI with low sensitivity adjustments is fine for me & the triple monitors setup.
It's a solid mouse with good tactile feedback from the buttons & doesn't feel cheap. Sides are a soft matte rubber & the top is a smooth plastic painted finish. It's a Great buy for under $50 price point & now I can comfortably move content across screens more effortlessly. :)

Other than a matte finish, a new Microsoft logo, and a white tail light instead of red, this looks and feels almost identical to the IME 3.0. Until now, on other systems I've been using a mouse like the Razer Death Adder (again primarily for business) to get a feel similar to the IntelliMouse Explorer. I'm still very happy with the Death Adder, but this Microsoft mouse fits the bill just as well.
This is a brand new mouse, so I'll update the review if any durability problems develop.
