Is there a benefit to nose breathing instead of mouth breathing?
- Yes. Nose breathing is far superior to mouth breathing. The issue with habitual mouth breathing is that we inhale and exhale too much air (chronic hyperventilation). Hyperventilation leads to an imbalance in the carbon dioxide-oxygen (CO2-O2) exchange. The brain responds by stimulating mucus production to slow our breathing, causing the onset of nasal congestion. This, in turn, creates a vicious cycle that leaves mouth breathers unable to breathe through the nose. Nose breathing slows and optimizes breathing cadence, protecting us from hyperventilation. One of the great functions of the nose is that it acts as a filter for airborne particles in inhaled air. The nose warms and humidifies inhaled air, protecting the lungs in cold or dry environments. And the nose optimizes CO2-02 exchange, which in turn, ensures efficient use of oxygen in the blood.
What is the breathing vent for?
- Our central vent mimics the functions of the nose if you begin mouth breathing. First, the small size of the vent helps regulate mouth breathing cadence, so that it's similar to nose breathing cadence. Second, the mesh layer similarly acts as a filter for airborne particles. Our users want to know that they can breathe through their mouths if necessary. Now they can do so without compromising breathing quality. It’s also there so that users can rest easy knowing that they can mouth breathe if necessary.
Will I be able to take it off easily if needed?
- Yes, it dislodges just by forcibly opening your mouth (no hands needed).
Does it pull on the lips or leave sticky residue?
- No. Our adhesive is hypoallergenic and specially-engineered for lip contact. It is very gentle and leaves no residue.
On the first night, I took it off. Does that mean I cannot use the strips?
- No. Most users will need 5-7 nights to become acclimated to using our strips. Because many of us are prone to mouth breathing while sleeping, nose breathing all night takes time and training.
I am unable to breathe through my nose. Can I use the strips?
- No. Because our strips encourage you to breathe through the nose, do not use the strips if you are unable to comfortably nose breathe. The inability to nose breathe is a sign that you should visit an Otolaryngology (ENT) specialist.
I notice that I default to mouth breathing through the vent. Is that normal?
- No. If your default breathing pattern while wearing the strip is through the central vent, then you should reposition the strip. To ensure that you default to nose breathing, turn the lips inward slightly while the lips are sealed when applying the strip. The breathing vent is there as a backup breathing option, and mouth breathing should be minimized.
Why won't the strip stick?
- Ensure that you diligently wash and dry the lips and surrounding area, making sure that the area is void of any balms or moisturizers. Once the lips are dry, the strip will stick. Any lubricants will compromise the adhesive.
Can I use it more than once?
- No. SomniFix Strips are single use. After a night's use, the strip should be discarded (by recycling) to avoid introducing bacteria to the lips.

I never write reviews. I guess I don’t trust them. I really wonder about the people that have the time and energy to tell complete strangers how much they liked their sheets, toothpaste, jeans, etc. But here I am, writing a review for tape you use to keep your mouth closed. My friend told me about somnifix and when I saw her screen shot of the product, I laughed out loud. I thought it was a joke. It was only a few days earlier that I was telling her about my nighttime mouth-breathing issues that was threatening my co-sleeping habits with my husband and left me waking with a tongue so dry it was cracking. One look at the product and I said, “I guess I’ll never have sex again....” But I was desperate enough that I ordered a box. I applied the product and when my husband saw it, he laughed so hard he cried which only confirmed my suspicions about the aforementioned sexual activity. I have to admit that at first I thought I was suffocating since all that mouth breathing had convinced my brain that my nose couldn’t be relied upon to move air into my body. But eventually things worked out and now I cannot sleep without the product. My dentist is genuinely impressed that my mouth doesn’t look like a swollen war zone anymore and the hygienist doesn’t need to call in sick when I’m on the schedule for a cleaning. My loud nighttime breathing has lessened and The warmth of my bed has increased now that my husband doesn’t have to run for the hills. I even still have sex once in awhile although not with the somnifix on. It has got a looooong way to go before it becomes an aphrodisiac. So give them to all the teenagers and pick up a box for yourself. You’ll be glad you did!

Nose breathing at night is superior in every way to mouth breathing, but since you can't readily control which passageway you utilize unaided, mouth strips can answer the call. For anyone new to nose breathing at night, these are a 30-day supply of 1-time use mouth strips that cover your entire lips. It has a small gap in the middle to help with mouth breathing airways in case you do want to open your lips partly for breath, but honestly you don't need it. I gave these 3 stars because I've realized after aided nose breathing for several months that I don't like tape to contact the surface of the entire length of my lips. In addition, each 1-time use strip comes in what I feel to be an excessive amount of packaging, which may very well account for half the cost of the purchase. It's very time consuming to cut out the strip from its packaging every single night. I use the B005OFM6JE 3M 1" Transpore Tape now where I can just break off a piece from the roller akin to scotch tape and put it at the center of my mouth. Solves both problems and at less than half the cost.

With nose breathing, I wake up feeling 10x more rested and even if I feel tired during the day, I hardly ever yawn anymore. Plus I have noticed my ability to process air during aerobic activity to improve 100 fold! I just ran a 5k the other day entirely with nose breathing only and finished in the top 5 of over 50 contestants!

I live in New England and during the fall and winter months I’ve woken up with a dry mouth and stuffed nose for most of my life. I just thought that’s how it worked. Even with a humidifier running.

Best of the mouth tapes

I almost gave these 5 stars, except that I can feel them when I'm sleeping, and occasionally they move around near the corners of my mouth, although they haven't come off on their own yet. Other than that, they have definitely helped keep me from waking up with dry mouth, and I'm pretty sure they are helping with my sleep apnea too by preventing my mouth from opening, forcing my nose to do all the breathing. I didn't suffer from snoring, but when I slept on my back, my mouth would drop open. I tried other mouth tapes and they were more annoying and caused breakouts on my skin. These work much better.

My husband was always a snorer but in the past few years the snoring had been getting louder and more constant. He had lots going on in his life (stress at work, death in the family, etc) and was carrying too much weight. Suddenly, just over year ago he developed asthma - unexpectedly and, honestly, a bit scary. He initially went the medical route and went to all of the best respiratory experts who put him on the usual inhalers and prescriptions but never asked him a single thing about lifestyle, breathing, stress… nothing.

While the prescriptions seem to help his asthma, they did nothing for his snoring and he gained a few pounds of weight rather quickly. So, we started to look for natural solutions. I ran into a Mike Mutzel video on mouth taping and found Patrick McKeown’s videos about Buteyko breathing on YouTube. We learned about how mouth breathing (day or night) can have really negative impacts on health, including contributing to asthma, allergies, snoring, tooth decay (!!). So, we both started mouth taping in Jan 2018. We started with 3M tape which worked well. Suddenly my husband wasn’t snoring Like that - over night. But there were a few problems. 1. It tore the skin off our lips and 2. I would wake up, take off the tape and find taped-in wrinkles on my mouth sort of like smokers lines!! It would take 20-30 mins for them to disappear. Eeek! 3. my husband said he felt a bit claustrophobic with it because the adhesive was so strong. In any case, I couldn’t continue with the 3M tape due to the skin being ripped off my lips every morning.

I did some more research and found SomniFix and had some friends send it to us from the US as it wasn’t yet available in the UK. What a difference. The tape has just the right amount of adhesive so it sticks but doesn’t rip off skin or cause puckering lines once removed. So we carried on mouth taping with Somnifix along with Buteyko breathing principals (if you have a constant stuffed nose I would STRONGLY recommend you google "How To Unblock Nose in three minutes” and find Patrick McKeown’s video - this was life changing for my husband.) Three months after starting this programme my husband was symptomless and stopped his asthma medication. His doctors were stunned - his lungs had recovered complete capacity (at one point they said he was breathing with only 70% capacity.) He had cleaned up his diet too and had lost a half stone so surely being healthier overall helped.

We see mouth taping (really, nose breathing) as absolutely essential to good health. That it stops snoring is a super positive side effect. But the overall health benefits of making sure you're breathing through your nose rather than your mouth has far reaching health benefits. Again, Patrick McKeown has some brilliant books published if you want to learn more about overall benefits of nose breathing.

Somnifix is more expensive than 3M tape but, for us, the cost is negligible given the benefit.

I was given a pack of Somnifix mouth strips by an American friend a couple of months ago, and despite being initially sceptical have been really impressed by how well they work. I was a bit nervous about putting tape over my mouth while I sleep but they have a small vent that allows some air through if needed, and also if you open your jaws wide (ie yawning or talking), they come off, so no need to worry about not being able to breathe!

As well as stopping my snoring, I've found that the following day I feel more refreshed, so must be getting better quality sleep too. Although I don't use them every night, I've found that using them frequently helps with breathing through my nose during the day too - probably because I'm more conscious of the benefits. I gave some to my daughter (in her early 20s) when we were away on holiday a few weeks ago, and she is using them too now.

It's great that they are now available in the UK.

I’m not one for leaving reviews but these things are amazing!! When I wear these I don’t snore full stop. I know this because I downloaded a sleep/ snoring recorder app and was horrified by the amount and volume of snores throughout the night before trying this out. Literally, the first night of wearing these, I did not snore at all. At first I thought these may be a bit expensive but I have found that you can get at least 3 nights out of 1 strip, which actually makes them real value for money. I find them pretty comfortable although they do look a little odd but still would highly recommend!
