A FIRE HAZARD

A FIRE HAZARD
We have had two Wemo mini smart plugs (Model F7C063) for several months and just purchased two more on Amazon. While we were eating lunch in the same room with one of the plugs, we smelled smoke. The oldest plug (bought last December on Amazon) started smoking and melted a hole through the top right side (half way between hot line plug and receptacle). At the time the 40-watt CFL lamp that was plugged into the Wemo was not on. There is no water in the area and no one touched the Wemo mini, which was plugged in a Belkin power strip. The only other fixture plugged into the power strip was an iPhone charger, which was not damaged. I have checked the polarity and grounding of the power strip, the outlet that it was plugged into, and the lamp. All three are fine.I sent a picture of the burnt smart plug to WemoCares@Belkin.com, but have not yet received a reply. None of the excuses given on the Wemo community website can explain the overheating, which occurred inside the Wemo mini itself. We were very fortunate that the incident occurred during the day and that we were nearby to smell it before a serious fire started. What assurances do we have that it won’t happen to our other three Wemo smart plugs we have purchased? A SERIOUS FIRE-HAZARD CONCERN.

I love this switch, but it is not for the uninitiated. You MUST know something about installing "smart" devices to your WiFi and how to use apps on your smartphone or tablet or you will be totally lost!

I work with technology and I am not afraid of being the first to try out some new "smart" gadget. Installing this was a breeze--just plug it in and plug in your device. It's the communications part that might be daunting for some who are not used to doing this. A few things: make sure you have a strong enough WiFi, make sure your smartphone or tablet is on the same WiFi (in case you have multiple routers), be patient, be prepared to do a manual link if the automatic one does not work (know your WiFi SID and password), and be prepared to wait for a firmware update to your Wemo Smart Plug after installation (which may make you think you did something wrong--just be patient). If you haven't installed a smart device before, make sure that your WiFi router is up-to-date and of current specifications for the IoT (Internet of Things) or you will be frustrated.

I have four of these Belkin Wemo plugs, two Belkin wall switches and I am not disappointed at all. Once you get it connected--it works GREAT! I use this with my iPhone, iPad, and Google Home. As long as your Internet connection is working, this will work.

I recommend this for my tech minded friends who talk geek. I do not recommend this for my mother who still calls DVDs "tapes".

I now own eight of them. They all work and setup is always a simple affair. I do use them with a Smartthings hub and is what I ultimately control them with. Always reliable and to date all have done exactly what I have asked them to do. Amazing, and here is why...

My first foray with any type of smart item was a pair of iHome plugs. They worked but eventually they had a mind of their own and became unresponsive. I didn't use them for a while as iHome had zero answers as to how to make them work. This even included them not working in their own app. Even after three updates later....one is responsive and the other, well, has decided to split from the herd again.

So back to the WeMo Mini's.... Since I have committed myself to using the Smartthings hub.....they are my choice of plugs. Not the smallest or prettiest....but they are clean and work as intended.

As far as why I do not control them with the WeMo app? Simple....I have a rule that I ask certain lights to come on 30-min before sunset while automatically adjusting for sunset as well each day....and it can do it. Seems simple but it amazing is a complex task.

Pairing with my iPhone was easy. (Once the Wemo plug was paired with my phone, the Wemo plug automatically paired with my iPad. Thank you iCloud.) I advise new users to read and follow the instructions, step-by-step. My only complaint is that while my iPad ALWAYS can communicate with my lamp through the Wemo app, my phone sometimes can’t make the link. This has happened even while I’m holding the iPhone right next to the iPad, so it can’t be the strength of the wi-fi signal. It has also happened when the iPhone was about a foot away from the Wemo device! I did figure out that if I close all the apps on the iPhone and, sometimes, re-start the phone, performance improves, but all that maneuvering is annoying. (More than 113 GB of memory is still available on my 128 GB iPhone, which is updated to the latest version of iOS, so the problem is not in the phone.) There was a recent Wemo firmware update which improved the iPhone-lamp link a lot, but it’s still not 100% consistent. Glitches aside, I am very glad that the Wemo has spared me the insecurity of walking all the way across a dark room to reach the lamp and eliminated the need for me to reach out and up from my bed to turn off the lamp when it’s time to sleep. I’m 75 years old now, and appreciate any help I can get.

I needed smart plugs for a couple of hard-to-get-to lamps in my home plus one or two for a second home. These smart-plugs, while a bit expensive, work very well and were very easy to set-up. Simply download the WEMO app and plug in the outlet. The app does the rest.Since they are compatible with Apple's Homekit, they can be operated from that app on an iPhone as well. The outlets can be operated using the app as an "off-on" switch or they can be put on a schedule so a lamp is switched on/off at the same times each day. I needed the ability to operate an outlet remotely so a lamp or lamps go on in my second home automatically when I am not there. All-in-all, a good product that works well and is easy to set-up.

I just received and installed the two Wemo mini plugs. Setup went smooth. I did notice that you have to disconnect your phone from your home Wifi and then reconnect it to the Wifi of the mini plug after which you can run the Wemo app . This allows you to configure the mini plug. In the mini plug setup it will then have you later connect it to your home wifi.
I have a NEEO remote which just started supporting WEMO switches and plugs. I have the remote working controlling the Wemo plug.
So far so good. Let's see how it's going in a month

Update: The plugs are working great, no issues. I just added a bluetooth receiver to my stereo but it doesn't have an on off switch. The second plug works great to control the power to the bluetooth receiver.
