The two of us were on a train journey, and we wanted to come up with a new book idea. We wrote down lots of well-known films and stories onto scraps of paper and then mixed them up to see what fun combinations we might find.
It was such a fun game, and made us laugh so much that we attracted the attention of the ticket inspector who came to ask us what we were doing!
We kept coming back to the idea of "Private Benjamin with witches", and that was the initial inspiration for A Spell in the Country, which sees our witches thrust into intensive basic training to shape them all into better witches.

Goody and Grant have achieved perfect harmony as collaborators: in A Spell in the Country, they write as one. It's well plotted, perfectly paced, fluent, and witty. Fans of the Clovenhoof and Oddjobs series will recognize G & G's signature gentle humor, which tends toward the slap-stick and absurd and is never mean-spirited. They may also note a swerve away from the bawdiness and light-hearted crudeness of earlier novels. The humor here is more situational and social; and scenes that draw comic energy from our shared experience of the body aim high rather than low. There's not much here for 12-year-old boys. Some adult readers, though, may miss the savage social satire and wacky riffs on organized religion that give Clovenhoof and Oddjobs their particular pungency.

I have read 7 of the 8 Clovenhoof books (the 8th comes out in a month) and really liked them so I thought "while I wait for it I'll give this silly "girl" book a shot. Not what I thought at all. What I thought is this is gonna be all girl power and my daughter's favorite chorus "who runs the world; girls".
It has a some girly stuff in it. This book is far from the estrogen fueled fluff that I thought. It was really good and I will read a sequel if there ever is one.

I'm not quite sure how I hadn't read this until now because I've been reading Heide and Iain's work for what feels like forever. But miss it I did until this week, when I was absolutely desperate for something uplifting to read to counteract all this (waves hands wildly) crap going on in the real world. Since I have to wait a little longer for the next Sam Applewhite, I checked the back catalogue and realised this one had escaped my attention.

It's bloody good. It's genuinely funny, often tongue in cheek, occasionally bordering on slightly inappropriate in a way that really appeals to me and I find quite hilarious. I loved all the characters, but I unexpectedly developed a soft spot for Norma. Kay's story was beautifully told with a very satisfying twist in the tale. I would love to see more stories with these characters.

There's also something very nostalgic about this book. It would be (spoilers) to say any more, but if you were to cross a particularly beloved children's author with the Carry On films (this is meant as a compliment - I won't hear a bad word said about them!) and set it in the 21st century, you'll seriously enjoy this book.

Some witches are good, others are bad, but if you want to be a great witch then take yourself of to the country and enrol on a 3 week course. That’s what Dee Finch, Caroline Black ,Sharon Jaye “Shazam” Madison, Norma Looney, Sabrina Holder-Eckford and Jenny Knott did. Coming along for the ride was Jizzimus Jenny’s imp and Kay a young girl who Jenny rescued. What started out as a bit of a farce, soon escalated into a battle of good v evil.
As witches they all lived secretive lives and it took a while for the group to click. Throughout the story you get to learn about each one in detail and with their individual skills and quirkiness, you will have a favourite character.
This story was fast flowing as there was always something going on. Whether it was a spell going completely wrong or the witches fighting for the power of good, making this a page turner. Throughout this book there is a lot of comedy and you will find yourself laughing out load, so it may be advisable to read this in the privacy of your own home. The main culprit for these scenes were Jizzimus, a very naughty imp that was owned by Jenny. Some of the things that he got up was hysterical and I kept wondering how Jenny could cope with his antics.
Whilst I own other works by these authors, I have not got round to reading the yet, but I loved this book so much that I am moving them up my TBR pile. A funny fantasy book that will brighten up your day.

I loved the whole structure of this story. Stories can get a bit tedious being told in first person so to find this following various witches was refreshing. Heide Goody also gave the whole story a perfect colouring without being too detailed. You got to know and understand the witches and could envision the places they visited. There was some really low key, British humour throughout. I loved the way each thread finally intertwined. Excellent and I can't wait to read one of her other books.

The story centres on Dee a hippy witch who is good and a big animal lover, Caroline an awesome witch mainly good but uses her powers to charm her way out of or into situations that are to her advantage and the last is Jenny a younger witch who is deemed wicked though she actually tries to be good and avoid all the pitfalls of her kind.
A young girl is rescued by Jenny then assisted by Dee and they take up an offer from a street questioner for a break in the country.
An enjoyable romp of a book showing to never judge a book by its cover and some people are just trying to survive. Absolutely adore Jizzimus Jenny's imp he's hilarious.
