Peter Parker struggles with the duality of his social life at school and hiding his secret identity of Spider-Man from everyone including his best friend, Harry Osborn.
While not as good as the sadly-cancelled 'Spectacular Spider-Man' cartoon from 2008-2010, this one is surprisingly okay for what it is. I did not like the 'Ultimate Spider-Man' tv show before this, so going into the 'successor' (as Marvel is calling it) left me with high doubts. But I'm happy to say that Marvel's Spider-Man is actually pretty good.
The most important aspect this show got right was Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Right off the bat, the dude is geeky, smart, awkward, hilarious and relatable. He never comes off as annoying, dull or a fourth-wall breaking ripoff (like in the Ultimate show). I even think he maybe better than the Spectacular Spider-Man version of the character, in terms of characteristics that is. However, sadly, there isn't much development with him as there was in Spectacular (which was 24 episodes long, where this is already 13 episodes in).
The animation is alright for what it is, though I've seen better from other incarnations.
Supporting characters are hit and miss from time-to-time. Once in a while we get good development from some, along with surprisingly really good emotional moments as well. But there are some characters who feel wasted and/or misused.
I also like that the creators are holding off on a romance for Peter. Kind of a spoiler, but it doesn't impact the story in anyway, so I think you'll all live if I go ahead and point that out. Yes, Gwen Stacy is in this. But I love how both she and Peter have a nice friendship, without any romance being forced down our throats. It feels refreshing to just seeing a boy and a girl just being friends.
The biggest negative I have with this cartoon is that it seems to not really have any sense of direction or main story-arc. Okay, not entirely true, there are a few plot-points and devices that could be setting up for a main story, but the episodes are mainly just your usual 'once-a-week villains' and small obstacles. In a way, it just feels like random stuff is happening and that's it. Some people have tried to reason that this is the way how the comics did this, but Spectacular Spider-Man managed to keep a following narrative with the usual once-an-episode problem. And to add to the list, the pacing can be too fast as well.
Maybe not the best, but Marvel's Spider-Man is definitely worth checking out. Even for the price of $1.99 (plus tax) I say you should give the first episode a try.
I have always loved Spider-Man and this is a really cute show. As an adult, it is somewhat of a nostalgia for me, but at the same time there are enough differences in the story to make it new. I love the comedy and the show really isn't that expensive, some of Disney's shows can be a little pricey, like Star Wars Rebels. I would recommend this show to anyone who doesn't mind watching animated shows and loves Spider-Man, especially kids.
The great thing about the classic Spider-Man stories and the 1990s cartoon was the characters. In this interpretation of Spider-Man his suporting cast is very lackluster. Most of the villians have no back story and poor motivation. It is like they are just there so something can happen during the episode.
I'm so glad I bought the entire season! I don't have cable anymore so this is amazing! I really adore this new Spider-man cartoon and am excited for the 2nd season.
