After using this for a month, while I like the app and like not paying a mouthy fee , viewing the video is slow and take up to a minute to view the cam. Also the base station does lose WiFi connection weekly for about 20 minutes. If you are looking for security this is not reliable.
I am using it to view a secure place , just want to make sure no one is sneaking into. So it fits my needs.
This was tough to install, software seemed unstable. I installed it, it worked, then 10 minutes later it stopped working . It lost WiFi connection, it would not reconnect . I deleted the WiFi and reinstalled and it’s been up for 24 hours no issues.
The base station did arrive with no charge, that could have been part of the issue.
For a free app it’s as full featured as my SimpliSafe safe app I pay 25 dollars a month for .
This is a great system if you need to view a place over the internet, don’t need or want to pay for a monitoring service.
Also if you only need a camera, you only have to buy one thing, as the base station has a built in camera.
Firstly the Alexa integration did not work as well as my Echo, so I turned that functionality off went back Echo. I don't know if they fixed that in the meantime, but I doubt it based on the issues.
Secondly, the geofencing does not work consistently. We had a trip over Thanksgiving and all users and their phones were well outside of the geofencing radius (over 700 miles away) but unit/app never armed. Honeywell Tech Support claims that 2 of the users were in - not true. One of the users is a teenager...they NEVER leave their phone (and she had it on her).
Thirdly, notifications that are supposed to keep one informed of movements etc. do not work consistently. How is one supposed to know if there is an issue if the unit does not arm itself or send notifications?
Fourthly, the integration with Lyric (thermostat) has not been working for over two months and repeated inquiries to Honeywell get the response that things will be fixed soon. Well, the app is the only way to control the humidifier and without this functionality one has no way to use this equipment. Mind you that humidity control is important in the winter, which we are right in the middle of now. My daughter has been getting nose bleeds due to the dry air.
Furthermore, the app will also show a temperature that does not correspond to the actual temperature displayed on the thermostat. It even did that when the thermostat was off when it got knocked loose and had no connection to the base plate and no power. Honeywell offered to downgrade the $200 Lyric to a $100 thermostat which would require a separate app.
Best case to look at is that the whole package is not fully ready and one has to be prepared to be a beta tester.
Worst case, I paid full price for a security item that does not work and resulted in limited functionality of my (formerly) smart thermometer.
WHAT IT IS
The HOME SECURITY BASE STATION is a ~7” tall cylindrical camera that serves as a hub/base for adding other products/features. While the emphasis for this product is expansion that provides coverage for an entire house, it can be used as a single/standalone security camera. This device is compatible with Amazon and Google smart devices.
FEATURES
- The cylinder is comprised of three sections: the lower section is for visual alerts, the large middle section is a speaker and the top section houses the camera/lens.
- The 147 degree wide-angle camera lens records videos in 1080P HD with audio.
- The audio is two way and can work with Amazon Alexa for voice commands
.
- There is a Honeywell app that allows users to control and customize the base as wells as view and save videos recorded by the camera.
- The system can be set up as a simple camera or a security system that detects motion, recognizes faces and features an alarm.
HOW IT PERFORMS
The set-up is relatively simple and typical … download the smartphone app and connect to your network. The instructions “manual” is a folded sheet of paper that provides limited information, especially considering the device’s capability and complexity. Unfortunately, my experience with the HOME SECURITY BASE STATION was based on trial and error. The support for this device is limited and what is severely missing is a comprehensive manual that clearly details every aspect of the device. The app is where I had to discover most features and even the app has issues.
While the setup is simple, figuring out how to interpret and control the base stations is a pain. I simply moved the device after setting it up and the alarm was triggered. On the plus side, the alarm’s piercing shriek is certainly effective, but turning it off was a problem that wasn’t solved by disconnecting the power source. It took almost 30 minutes to find out how to silence the alarm and if burying the device under pillows/blankets and closing the bedroom door had not worked, the base station would have been in pieces on the street (yes, it was THAT bad).
The instructions indicate the top of the base station has a “button” which controls several things, but it’s a touch pad that offers no indication of when it’s been engaged. Then there are the color-coded lights that emanate from the base … blue/red/green/white … figuring out (and remembering) what those stand for is not so easy (a red light accompanies the alarm as well as indicates the system is not online). Occasionally, the device delivers an unexpected notification that comes across as a wakeup chime or hum … while this is not unpleasant (it is actually soothing), I still have no idea what it means. The base set also reacts to any command given to Alexa (flashing blue light and a subtle audible tone).
The app is essential, and it serves as the best way to control this beast. This is where you will discover the additional features and expansion capability of the base station, such as facial recognition, camera modes, motion detection settings, etc. Discovering these functions is a trial-and-error process as well; I was receiving HUNDREDS of email notifications of motion detection before I figured out how to stop the deluge and only then could I take steps necessary to control the motion detection aspects of the camera. The camera records when motion is detected, so if your phone will start accumulating a lot of videos in short order if you haven’t made the right setting.
Unfortunately, some of the most interesting/promising features of the base station will require a subscription for service. For example, the facial recognition is certainly a neat feature that involves a process in which the camera learns facial features … you are allowed two faces for free and must subscribe to add more. In other words, you will pay for the bells and whistles.
As frustrated as I was with so many aspects of this device, the basic function of wide-angle coverage of a room is outstanding and the video quality is superb. Once I adjusted to the nuances of the base station, mainly setting the motion detection parameters and putting a halt to the notifications, I’ve enjoyed using it. It is a hi-tech device with a lot of potential but too little information on how to operate the thing. Many of problems I experienced could have been prevented had Honeywell simply provided a more thoughtful and thorough user manual. The HONEYWELL SMART HOME SECURITY BASE STATION has a lot of potential, but for now, I’m a little hesitant to consider expanding or subscribing.
