Fast-paced, fun YA set in a Steampunk world

This novella delivers exactly what is promised on the cover and in the blurb: quick, fun entertainment that will leave you ready for more. There is just enough character development to make you care about the character (assuming he didn't already catch your interest in For Steam and Country), but I'd say about 3/4 of the story is one kind of action or another. I appreciate that for a story of this kind, the character arc is handled realistically. This is not a guy version of Mary Sue. We are seeing and eager, capable and brave young man who still has much to learn, and he is at the beginning of the journey. Not everything works out, he doesn't magically have skills he hasn't learned before, yet he persevere and comes out a better man and a better fighter on the other end. Happy to see this novella is listed as part of a series, so looking forward to more.

A good addition to the saga

This book is short, but it gives a good I sight into this saga from James' perspective. The style seems "simple" and straightforward, but I think that accurately reflects the way a young man like James would think. Which I mean as no insult to his intelligence, but rather a compliment to the author on accurately conveying the character's way of thinking. Another thing I really enjoyed, that has less to do with the story, but more to do with liking James as a character, is that he never feels sorry for himself, no matter what happens.

Knight Training is short, punchy, and neatly bridges For Steam and Country with The Blood of Giants. James Gentry, Knight of the Crystal Spire in training, foils a traitorous plot, all the while continuing his training, dealing with his classmates who resent his skill and ability . . . and attracting the attention of Rislandia's Princess Reina. Knight Training is fun, swashbuckling, and makes you really want to enter the world of Rislandia yourself. Here's to hoping Del Arroz writes more side stories in this vein!

Steampunk with heart

Others tend to review the story, but I like to review the impact it has on me. I love how the emotion comes through the characters so clearly that I can feel the story instead of just reading it. Also, I have a spot in my heart for steampunk. It's not critical to the story, but it gets used at key points and shows up nicely in the world building.

A fun adventure that ties into the For Steam and Country storyline without being redundant or focusing too much on Zaira von Monocle. I felt like James was underdeveloped in For Steam and Country, so this was a really fun way to get to know him and appreciate him as a character all on his own, without his dependence on Zaira to make him likeable.
